Audacity uses the LAME encoder to create MP3 files, but most Windows and Mac users do not need to install it separately: Audacity says LAME is built in on those platforms. On Linux, availability depends on the distribution package, so check whether Audacity detects the MP3 library before installing anything.
What LAME does in Audacity
LAME is the MP3 encoder Audacity uses when exporting audio as an MP3. The key distinction is that the encoder is still part of the MP3 workflow, but a separate LAME download is not a universal requirement. Audacity’s LAME installation FAQ says the library is built into Audacity for Windows and Mac.

Check whether Audacity can export MP3
If MP3 is missing from the export choices or Audacity reports that an encoder is unavailable, start by checking library detection rather than downloading software immediately.
- Open Libraries Preferences. In Audacity, go to
Edit > Preferences > Librarieson Windows orAudacity > Preferences > Librarieson Mac. The exact menu presentation can vary by release. See Audacity’s Libraries Preferences documentation. - Look for the MP3 Export Library entry. If Audacity detects the library, the panel displays its version. Try exporting again.
- Use Locate if a library exists but is not detected. Select
Locateand point Audacity to the compatible library file already on your system. - Use Download only if offered and needed. The Preferences panel may provide a Download control. Follow the available option for your Audacity version.
What Linux users should check
Linux packaging differs by distribution and installation method. Audacity says that when it is installed from an official distribution repository, most distributions also install LAME automatically. If MP3 export is unavailable, first check your distribution’s package manager for a compatible LAME package, then reopen Audacity and inspect Libraries Preferences. If the library is installed but not detected, use Locate to select it. Audacity’s Linux installation guide covers the distribution-package route and installing a compatible encoder when needed.

Avoid assuming that instructions for one Linux distribution or Audacity packaging format apply to another. Use the package source and library location appropriate to your system; compiling LAME is not the first troubleshooting step when a compatible package is available.
FFmpeg does not replace LAME for MP3 export
FFmpeg is a separate optional library. Audacity documents it for additional formats, including M4A and WMA, and for importing audio from video. Its current support guidance says LAME is already included by default on Windows and macOS. If MP3 export fails, check Audacity’s version and MP3 library detection rather than treating FFmpeg as a universal fix. For exports through an external encoder program, Audacity documents a distinct workflow in its external encoder guide.

Choose MP3 settings for the audio and destination
Audacity offers variable bitrate (VBR), average bitrate (ABR), and constant bitrate (CBR) modes, along with presets. Higher quality settings generally produce larger files. The right choice depends on the recording and the delivery requirements; a platform’s published specifications take priority over general recommendations.

These figures are recommendations in Audacity’s MP3 Export Options manual, not mandatory settings or guaranteed results for every recording or playback system. For spoken-word audio, mono is often suitable when there is no meaningful stereo content. Keep stereo when the recording’s music or spatial sound matters.

Keep MP3 encoding until the final export
MP3 is a lossy format. Editing an imported MP3 and exporting it as MP3 adds another lossy encoding pass, which can reduce audio quality. For production work, keep an editable lossless version in WAV, AIFF, or FLAC, then create the MP3 as the final export. This preserves a better source for future edits and avoids repeatedly compressing the same material.
