The release was announced September 30, 2026. These are scoped release-note claims: they do not identify every affected system, provide a project-recovery procedure, or establish that the fix has been independently tested on every configuration.
How do I fix Audacity project corruption after a failed save?
Audacity’s 4.0.1 release notes state: “Fixed project corruption after a failed save.” That describes a fix in the application; it does not say that installing 4.0.1 can repair a project already damaged by an earlier failed save.
If you still have the affected project, preserve an untouched copy before trying to open, convert, or otherwise modify it. The release notes do not publish recovery steps or promise that a damaged file can be restored. Work from a duplicate and keep any backups separate from the original.
For future work, retain separate project backups. Audacity’s earlier 4.0.0 Beta 4 notes advised beta users to keep backups and expect bugs; that is a general beta-era precaution, not evidence that the 4.0.1 fix is defective.

Why won’t the Audacity AppImage install or start on Linux?
The Audacity 4.0.1 notes say: “Fixed the AppImage failing to install or start on some Linux distributions.” The wording is limited to some distributions. It does not name them or establish that every startup or installation failure on Linux has the same cause.
For a new download, use the official Audacity 4.0.1 release listing and select the AppImage matching your system’s CPU architecture. The listing shows two assets dated September 30, 2026:

These are asset details from the release listing, not a ranking of compatibility or stability. If the matching 4.0.1 AppImage still fails, note the exact error, Linux distribution and version, and whether the machine is x86_64 or AArch64; that information helps distinguish an unresolved environment-specific problem from the issue described in the release notes.
What else does Audacity 4.0.1 fix?
The same release listing also names fixes for problems converting .aup3 projects and opening projects or files whose names or containing folders use non-ASCII characters. It lists other fixes as well, including crashes, effect behavior, export file naming, and recognition of uppercase .WAV extensions on Linux. These entries identify additional release-note fixes; they do not imply every project-opening or export problem is covered.

Check Audacity 4 feature compatibility before upgrading
Audacity’s compatibility notes for 4.0 list several Audacity 3 features as unavailable in Audacity 4.0, including the Mixer, Macro Manager and scripting pipe, VAMP and LADSPA plugin hosting, and Play-at-speed. The notes also mention gaps involving Time Tracks, Note/MIDI tracks, exporting and rendering, analyzers, and effects. This is specifically a 4.0 compatibility statement; it does not establish the status of each feature in a later Audacity 4 release. Check the current Audacity documentation if your workflow depends on one of them before upgrading.
