The right way to move calendar events and contacts to new Outlook depends on where they are stored. If they already sync with your email account, sign in to that same account and check Calendar and People. For items in a classic Outlook PST, use new Outlook’s PST import. Local classic Outlook contacts need a CSV export and import; events in the older Windows Calendar app use an ICS file.
First, find where your calendar and contacts are stored
Before exporting anything, check whether the items are already associated with your account or exist only on your computer. Add the same account to new Outlook and look in Calendar and People. If the items appear there, they are available in the mailbox and do not need a separate file migration. Microsoft’s separate import instructions cover local files and data that did not appear after switching.

- Items in a mailbox: Sign in to the same account in new Outlook and check Calendar and People.
- Items in a classic Outlook PST: Import selected PST folders into a mailbox, or open the PST separately to browse it.
- Contacts in classic Outlook’s “This computer only” folder: Export them to CSV in classic Outlook, then import the CSV in new Outlook.
- Events or contacts in the older Windows Calendar or People apps: Export calendar events as ICS and export People contacts separately.
These sources are not interchangeable: PST is an Outlook data file, CSV is the documented route for local classic Outlook contacts, and ICS is the documented route for Windows Calendar events.

Import calendar events and contacts from a PST
New Outlook’s PST import copies selected items into a mailbox destination; it does not attach the PST as a separately browsable data file. Microsoft documents this path in Import email, contacts, and calendar from an Outlook .pst file.

- In new Outlook, select Settings > Data files > Import.
- Under Outlook Data File (.pst), select Get started, then Select file. Find and open the PST.
- Choose the folder to import. Leave Include subfolders selected if you need its nested folders.
- Choose how new Outlook should handle duplicates.
- Select the destination account or mailbox and folder. Create a new destination folder if you want the imported items kept separate.
- Select Import.
Choose the destination carefully: the import places selected items in the mailbox you choose. Keep the source PST until you have checked that the expected events and contacts arrived.
If you want to browse the PST instead of importing it
Use Settings > Data files > Outlook Data Files > Add file to open a PST separately. Microsoft’s instructions say this option requires classic Outlook to be installed, matching 32-bit or 64-bit architectures, a Microsoft 365 subscription on the new Outlook account, and a non-ARM build of new Outlook. New Outlook must not be in Safe or Recovery mode. This is a different feature from importing PST contents into a mailbox.

What new Outlook’s PST support means
Microsoft’s feature comparison, last updated September 23, 2026, labels PST support in new Outlook “Partially available.” It says new Outlook supports importing mail, calendar events, contacts, and tasks, while some classic Outlook capabilities remain unavailable. If the import option is missing, check the current in-app options and Microsoft’s feature comparison between new Outlook and classic Outlook.
Move contacts saved locally in classic Outlook
Microsoft warns that locally saved classic Outlook contacts “may not have copied over to new Outlook.” If they are missing, export the local Contacts folder from classic Outlook to a CSV file, then import that file in the People area of new Outlook. Follow Microsoft’s CSV contact import and export instructions.

- In classic Outlook, select File > Open & Export > Import/Export.
- Choose Export to a file, then Comma Separated Values.
- Select Contacts (This computer only) under the relevant account, then save the CSV.
- Open the CSV and confirm it contains the expected contacts before proceeding. Blank cells in the spreadsheet view are normal.
- In new Outlook, go to People and import the CSV. Microsoft recommends UTF-8 encoding for compatibility.
Move events and contacts from the older Windows apps
The older Windows Mail, Calendar, and People apps have a separate export process; it is not the classic Outlook PST workflow. Microsoft’s instructions cover exporting Calendar events to an ICS file and exporting contacts from People, then importing them into new Outlook. - Calendar events: In the older Windows Calendar app, export the local events to an .ics file, then import the file into new Outlook.
- People contacts: In Windows People, use Export all contacts, then import the exported contacts into new Outlook.
Local-only data can be left behind if it is not exported before moving to new Outlook, so check both apps if you used them to store items on the device.

Know what a PST export includes before relying on it
If you are creating a PST from classic Outlook as a migration source, Microsoft says the export makes a copy; the source email, contacts, and calendar remain in Outlook. The export does not include folder properties such as views, permissions, or AutoArchive settings, message rules, or blocked-senders lists. In Cached Exchange Mode, the PST includes only items in the current cache, which by default contains the past 12 months. Microsoft says to turn off Cached Exchange Mode before exporting more than that period. See Microsoft’s PST export instructions.

- Check the destination calendar at representative dates, including older appointments if those matter.
- Search People for several contacts and compare important fields, not just names.
- Keep the original PST, CSV, or ICS file until you are satisfied the destination contains the items you need.
Switch back to classic Outlook if needed
Microsoft documents switching from new Outlook back to classic Outlook using the toggle or the Go to classic Outlook option where available. Automatic-switch behavior depends on account and plan eligibility, so the controls may differ. See Switch to new Outlook for Windows.
