In a September 23, 2026 response reported by MacRumors, an AT&T spokesperson acknowledged potential in features like Handoff but pointed to the carrier’s existing eSIM activation and transfer options. The response included no commitment or launch date; it does not establish that AT&T has rejected the feature permanently.
For now, Apple’s setup page lists T-Mobile in the United States and Telekom in Germany as participating carriers. That makes carrier eligibility—not just owning two compatible iPhones—the key question for anyone hoping to use one number across two phones.

What iPhone Handoff does
Apple’s Handoff feature lets one phone number move between two iPhones. The number is active on only one iPhone at a time: unlocking the phone you want to use activates the number there. Calls, voicemail, iMessage, RCS, SMS/MMS, and Find My location move to the iPhone in use. It is a switch between devices, not a way to use the same number on both simultaneously.
Does AT&T support iPhone Handoff?
AT&T has not confirmed support or given a timeline in the statement reported by MacRumors on September 23, 2026. The spokesperson said: “While we see that there could be potential in capabilities like iPhone Handoff, our focus remains on delivering innovations that make life simpler and keep customers connected with confidence.” The report says the spokesperson then pointed to “existing eSIM activation and transfer options across compatible devices.”
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
That answer is noncommittal: it recognizes possible potential but does not say AT&T is developing Handoff, nor that the carrier will never offer it. Apple’s current eligibility page does not list AT&T as a participating U.S. carrier.
Which carriers currently list support, and what does it cost?
| Market | Carrier status | Price information |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Apple lists T-Mobile. T-Mobile says its Handoff service is available on compatible iPhones, subject to eligible plans. | T-Mobile announced $5 per month on September 10, 2026. This is T-Mobile’s stated recurring monthly price, not a price for other carriers. |
| Germany | Apple lists Telekom. | Apple’s setup page does not state Telekom’s fee. |
Carrier support can change, so check Apple’s current country-specific eligibility list before signing up or buying a second phone. Reports that Verizon and EE might add support later in 2026 are expectations, not confirmation that either carrier is currently eligible.

What you need to set up Handoff
- Two iPhones running iOS 27 or later, both connected to Wi-Fi.
- The same Apple Account on both phones, with Messages in iCloud enabled.
- FaceTime and iMessage signed in with that same account.
- An eSIM from a carrier that supports Handoff. Carrier fees or plan eligibility rules may apply.
Apple says setup is available during new-iPhone setup or later from Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM. Select Use Number on This iPhone and Another and follow the on-screen prompts. If you replace a phone, you may need to transfer its eSIM and set up Handoff again; the steps depend on the carrier’s eSIM-transfer support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat Handoff does not move
- Apple Watch pairing: Handoff does not automatically switch an Apple Watch pairing to the other iPhone.
- Some carrier controls: Call Forwarding, Caller ID, and carrier-account management remain tied to the main iPhone.
- Some app sessions: Third-party apps may sign you out on one phone or require approval from the device already signed in.
- Turning off service: Apple says to contact your carrier to disable Handoff. Deleting an eSIM alone may not stop service charges.
How to think about AT&T alternatives
AT&T’s reference to eSIM activation and transfer is not the same as Handoff. eSIM transfer moves a cellular plan between compatible devices; Handoff is intended to let one number switch between two enrolled iPhones as you use them. If you need the number to move automatically between two phones, verify that the carrier is listed by Apple for your country before relying on a standard eSIM transfer option.
