If you use both ChatGPT and the OpenAI API, two charges can be legitimate: they are billed separately. A genuine duplicate is more likely when you have overlapping subscriptions through different purchase channels or accounts. Check each billing system and store before disputing a payment.
Why two AI charges may both be valid
OpenAI says ChatGPT and the API platform have separate billing systems. Manage each product’s charges and billing history in its own settings. A ChatGPT subscription pays for the consumer ChatGPT plan; API charges relate to API usage. If you use both, both charges may be expected.

Charges can also differ by purchase channel, account or organization, billing basis, and covered period. Similar amounts or close payment dates do not prove that the same service was billed twice.

How to trace a charge step by step
- Note the transaction details. Record the merchant name, amount, payment date, and any invoice or transaction reference shown on your statement. Treat these as clues, not conclusive proof of which product was billed.
- Check ChatGPT billing. Sign in to the account you use for ChatGPT and open its billing settings to review the plan and subscription history. If you use a team workspace, check its workspace billing as well.
- Check app-store subscriptions. Review active subscriptions in the Apple App Store and Google Play accounts associated with the devices and accounts you have used to subscribe. A web subscription and an app-store subscription can be separate.
- Check API billing separately. Open the billing overview for the relevant API organization. ChatGPT subscription settings do not show API charges, and API billing does not show a consumer ChatGPT subscription.
- Reconcile API usage. In the API Usage Dashboard, choose the right organization and reporting period, then inspect project filters and usage exports. API request usage information can also help identify activity. Dashboard dates use UTC, and calls made in the Playground count as API usage.
- Compare the periods before disputing. Check whether a recurring subscription date, API credit purchase, usage charge, or invoice covers the same service period as the other entry.
How ChatGPT and API billing cadence differs
OpenAI’s billing guidance says a self-serve monthly ChatGPT subscription renews on the date it began. API billing may use prepaid credits or automatic card payments; enterprise API customers may be invoiced. Enterprise ChatGPT billing follows the customer’s agreement. Check the applicable invoice or billing details rather than assuming every payment recurs on the same schedule.

Set expectations for API spend controls
Spend alerts notify you when usage reaches a configured point; they are not a traffic stop. A configured organization or project hard limit can stop affected requests, but enforcement is not instantaneous and recorded spend can slightly exceed the limit.
Keep these controls distinct:
- Usage alert: a notification about spend, not a guarantee that requests will stop.
- Hard limit: a configured cap intended to restrict affected API requests, with possible delay before enforcement.
- Prepaid credits: a balance used for API billing, separate from a ChatGPT subscription and from an alert.
What to do if a charge is still unexplained
Contact OpenAI or the billing platform that processed the payment with the charge date, amount, invoice or transaction reference, the account or organization involved, and the relevant usage period. Never include an API key or payment credentials in a support message.
