Those safeguards do not make every customer setup secure or compliant by themselves: your organization still needs to manage user access, check product-specific residency and retention terms, and plan recovery for destructive changes. Atlassian says its service backups are not used to reverse customer-initiated deletions.
What Atlassian’s security policy covers
Atlassian’s Technical and Organisational Security Measures describes controls intended to protect Customer Data and Customer Materials. It says the measures are consistent with commonly accepted industry standards, including NIST 800-53, and has an effective date of October 7, 2025. That statement describes Atlassian’s control framework; it is not an independent finding that a particular customer environment meets its security or compliance obligations.

Scope matters. Atlassian’s Security Practices information applies to Jira, Confluence and Bitbucket Cloud unless otherwise noted. A control described for named cloud products or a particular backup system should not automatically be assumed to cover every Atlassian product or service.
How Atlassian describes protecting cloud data
Encryption and separation
Atlassian says data in transit in its cloud products is encrypted using TLS 1.2 or higher with perfect forward secrecy. For named cloud products, it describes AES-256 full-disk encryption at rest for data and attachments, as well as logical separation between customer tenants. These are platform safeguards; they do not determine who in your organization can access content or whether your handling of it satisfies a legal obligation.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Privileged staff access
Atlassian describes restricted privileged access supported by authentication and authorization controls, including two-factor authentication for privileged access. It says support engineers need customer consent before accessing customer data. Its Trust Center also describes a layered staff-access model that includes phishing-resistant multifactor authentication, just-in-time privileged access, customer consent and monitoring. These descriptions concern Atlassian’s staff and systems, not the identity controls your own users need.
What customers need to manage
Atlassian frames security as a shared responsibility: it is responsible for the applications, systems and hosting environment it provides, while customers need to assess their requirements and configure their own use of the services. A practical review should cover:

- Products and plans: identify which Atlassian products and subscription plans contain the data you are assessing.
- Identity and permissions: review who can access content, how privileged access is granted, and which authentication and account policies your organization enforces.
- Data sensitivity and obligations: determine the requirements that apply to your organization and the specific data, rather than treating general security statements as a compliance conclusion.
- Evidence and terms: check the Trust Center and applicable legal terms for commitments relevant to each product in scope.
Organization-wide identity controls
Atlassian Guard is described as enabling visibility and security across company Atlassian accounts and products, including centralized user management and policy enforcement. It may be relevant when reviewing organization-wide administration, but using it alone does not establish compliance or make every configuration appropriate.
Where is my Atlassian data stored?
Data residency depends on product, subscription conditions, eligibility and the content covered by the selected location. Atlassian’s guidance on understanding data residency explains that eligible organization administrators can pin in-scope content to a location under specified conditions. Confirm current eligibility and exactly which content is covered before relying on a location commitment.

- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
Backup location has its own scope. Atlassian Support says that, starting April 28, 2026, Atlassian Backup and Restore supports residency for in-scope backups for Jira, Jira Service Management and Confluence: new qualifying backups are stored in the application’s pinned region. Backups created before a later pin are not moved by that pin. This date and behavior apply to the named products and backup service, not automatically to all Atlassian data or products.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can Atlassian restore deleted Jira or Confluence data?
Do not assume Atlassian’s service backups can undo a deletion made by a customer. Atlassian says its backups are not used to reverse customer-initiated destructive changes, including deleted work items, projects or sites, and recommends that customers make regular backups. Organizations should evaluate an independent backup and recovery approach against their actual products, data and recovery objectives; no particular provider is established here.

What Atlassian says about its RDS backups
For the systems described in its cloud architecture material, Atlassian says RDS snapshots are automated daily, retained for 30 days, encrypted with AES-256, support point-in-time recovery and are tested quarterly. These details describe that backup system and should not be generalized to every Atlassian product or treated as a customer-controlled restore guarantee.

Atlassian’s Security Practices page describes deactivation and retention periods after a subscription ends, with different durations for evaluation and paid sites. It also notes a Jira-specific condition related to unsubscribing from all previously subscribed Jira products. Because the applicable period depends on product and subscription state, check the current terms for the site in question before setting a deletion deadline.
Quick Recap
A focused Atlassian security review
- Inventory the scope. List the Atlassian products, plans, data types and sites covered by the review.
- Review access. Check user permissions and privileged access, and confirm your organization’s authentication policies for its accounts.
- Verify residency. Confirm eligibility and pinned-content scope for each product; separately check backup coverage, including the treatment of backups created before a pin.
- Set recovery expectations. Decide how your organization will recover from customer-initiated deletion or other destructive changes, rather than relying on Atlassian’s service backups for that purpose.
- Check lifecycle terms. Verify current retention and deletion conditions for each product and subscription state.
- Validate commitments. Use Atlassian’s Trust Center and applicable legal terms to confirm product-specific controls and commitments relevant to your requirements.
