Choose the Atari 800XL recreation if you want to type on a full-size keyboard, use built-in Atari BASIC, or play from original cartridges. Choose the Atari 400 Mini if you want an available, compact HDMI device with games included and do not need a built-in typing keyboard or cartridge slot. Atari currently lists the 800XL for preorder with estimated shipping in late April 2027, while the Mini is listed as available.
At a glance: computer recreation or compact game system?
The new Atari 800XL is a recreation of the 1980s computer, not a vintage unit. Its defining features are a full-size mechanical keyboard, built-in Atari BASIC, and a working cartridge slot. Atari says that slot supports most Atari 400, 800, XL, and XE cartridges; “most” matters, since Atari does not claim universal compatibility. Atari 800XL product details

The Atari 400 Mini is a half-sized device that emulates Atari 8-bit systems and the Atari 5200. It comes with 25 built-in games and a CXStick joystick. It is designed for HDMI play rather than as a full-size computer: Atari says a standard PC keyboard can be connected by USB, but the Mini itself does not have a working typing keyboard. Which one should you choose?
Choose the Atari 800XL recreation if you want to use it as a computer
- You want a full-size keyboard and built-in Atari BASIC for typing and programming.
- You have original Atari 400, 800, XL, or XE cartridges and want a physical cartridge slot. Compatibility is “most” cartridges, according to Atari, not all.
- You want Atari’s stated USB support for cartridge, disk, and cassette images.
- You are comfortable with a preorder and the current estimated late-April-2027 shipping window.
Choose the Atari 400 Mini if you want a compact, available HDMI device
- You want to play its 25 included games with the supplied CXStick and HDMI connection.
- You would rather use a small device than a full-size computer recreation.
- You are comfortable loading compatible games from USB storage instead of using original cartridges.
- You may want keyboard input occasionally: Atari says a standard PC keyboard can connect through USB, but it is not built into the Mini.
What to know about games, keyboards, and setup
Included games and loading your own
Both products are advertised with 25 built-in games. Atari describes USB loading differently for each: the 800XL page names cartridge, disk, and cassette images, while the Mini page says it supports compatible games from a USB flash drive. That distinction is useful if you already have software in a particular format; the pages do not establish that every file or game will work.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. - Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keyboard use on the Mini
A standard PC keyboard can connect to the Mini through USB, according to Atari. This offers keyboard input without turning the Mini into the full-size keyboard recreation described for the 800XL. Atari does not identify a particular keyboard model in the product information.
Power and display
Both devices offer HDMI output. The Mini package includes a USB-C power cable but not the power adapter, so plan to supply a compatible adapter. Atari’s cited 800XL description does not state power-adapter details; confirm the final package contents before buying.
