To get a free-to-play game on Steam, sign in, open its Store page, select the option to play or add it to your account, then install it from your Library. Steam says these games can be downloaded and played without a subscription, credit card, or purchase.
What “free” means on Steam
Steam’s free-to-play category covers games that are free to download and play. Purchases are not required for gameplay or progress, although a game may offer optional in-game items or content. The Store listing changes over time, so check the selected game’s current page for its status and any game-specific conditions.

A free-to-play game is not necessarily the same as a limited-time free-to-keep offer. Steam’s general instructions explain how to get and install free-to-play games, but they do not establish how every temporary promotion works or whether it remains available after the offer ends. Create or sign in to a Steam account
You need a Steam account to use the Store and Library. Steam lets you create one through its website or the Steam application. Follow the account-creation prompts, then sign in. Steam’s account instructions are at How do I create a Steam account?.

Find and add a free-to-play game

Open the Steam Store and browse or search for a game.

Open the game’s Store page and check that it is currently listed as free to play. Review its platform support and any game-specific conditions there.

Choose the page’s option to play or add the game, then follow the prompts. Steam’s new-user guide describes adding a game by downloading a free-to-play title.

Install and launch it from your Library

Open Library in the Steam application.

Select the game you added. Steam’s general new-user instructions say to double-click the title to install and run it.

If Steam presents installation choices, follow the client’s prompts and wait for the installation to finish before launching.

Do you need a credit card or a purchase?
No. Steam says a credit card and subscription are not required to download or play free-to-play games, and purchases are not required for play or progress. Optional in-game purchases may still be offered.

What a free Steam account can restrict
An account with no purchased game and no funded Steam Wallet is classified by Steam as a Limited User account. Steam restricts some community features for these accounts, and individual games may set their own limits. This does not mean you must buy or fund the account to download and play a free-to-play game.
