ATA over Ethernet Explained: What AoE Does and How It Works

ATA over Ethernet (AoE) provides block storage over a local Ethernet network using direct Ethernet frames. See how targets, Linux device names, and interface filtering fit together.

ATA over Ethernet (AoE) is a protocol for accessing block storage across a local Ethernet network. It carries storage commands directly in Ethernet frames rather than through IP, so ordinary IP routers do not route AoE traffic. On Linux, a host can discover AoE storage targets and use them as block devices.

What does ATA over Ethernet mean?

ATA over Ethernet is shortened to AoE. It makes storage available over Ethernet at the block-device level: the host works with a storage device rather than a shared folder or file-transfer service. The Linux kernel documentation describes AoE as “a network protocol that provides simple access to block storage on the LAN.” Linux kernel documentation

The host requesting storage is the initiator; the system exporting storage is the target. The target receives ATA read or write commands from the initiator and returns responses. Coraid’s EtherDrive HOWTO

How does AoE carry storage traffic?

AoE sends its traffic in Ethernet frames, using frame type 0x88a2. It does not depend on TCP/IP or the iSCSI protocol layers. Because it is not carried as IP packets, ordinary IP routing does not forward AoE frames between networks. Coraid’s EtherDrive HOWTO Coraid product description

This describes how the protocol travels, not a security guarantee. AoE should be kept on trusted network segments and interfaces intended for storage; non-routability alone does not make a shared Ethernet network safe. The Linux kernel documentation specifically warns against accepting AoE traffic from untrusted networks. Linux kernel documentation

What does AoE look like on Linux?

Linux documents an AoE driver that discovers targets and presents them as block devices. Device names encode the target’s shelf and slot, such as e0.2; a partition can appear with an added partition suffix, such as e0.2p1. For systems using udev, device nodes are typically created automatically. The driver also exposes status and interface information through sysfs. Linux kernel documentation

The older Coraid HOWTO describes the same shelf-and-slot addressing model and mentions aoetools, a user-space tool collection used with the Linux driver. Its technical guidance dates to April 2008, so current Linux driver behavior and options should be checked against the documentation for the kernel version in use. Coraid’s EtherDrive HOWTO

What network setup does AoE need?

The host needs Ethernet connectivity for AoE traffic, and the interface used for storage must be up. A dedicated network interface can be used for storage traffic, but no particular NIC model or Ethernet speed is an AoE protocol requirement. Choose connectivity appropriate to the storage system and the workload rather than assuming AoE requires Gigabit Ethernet. Coraid’s EtherDrive HOWTO

On Linux, the kernel documents the aoe_iflist parameter for limiting the driver to selected network interfaces. Restricting discovery and traffic to the intended storage interfaces helps avoid exposing the host to AoE traffic on unrelated or untrusted networks. Confirm the parameter’s exact behavior and configuration for the kernel version you run. Linux kernel documentation

How is AoE different from IP-based storage?

The defining distinction established by the protocol documentation is the network path: AoE uses Ethernet frames directly and is not IP-routed. The sources cited here do not establish a complete performance, feature, or cost comparison with iSCSI, Fibre Channel, or other storage approaches, so those should not be inferred from AoE’s simpler protocol path alone.
