AT&T says CFO Pascal Desroches plans to retire effective December 31, 2026, and Jennifer Biry is scheduled to take over on January 1, 2027. The headline’s description of AT&T shares as “steady” conflicts with its accompanying live update, which reports a 6.25% decline. That figure has not been independently verified here, and the available evidence does not show that the CFO news caused a share-price move.

What AT&T announced about its CFO transition

AT&T’s SEC filing says Desroches announced his retirement on June 11, 2026. The company appointed Biry deputy CFO on June 15, effective July 6, and scheduled her to become CFO on January 1, 2027. Desroches’ retirement is scheduled to take effect the day before, December 31, 2026. AT&T SEC filing

Who is Jennifer Biry?

Reuters reported that Biry’s AT&T career began in 1999, that she served as WarnerMedia CFO from 2020 to 2022, and that her most recent role before the appointment was CFO of McAfee. These details are Reuters’ account of her career. Reuters’ report on the succession

Does “stock steadies” match the reported share move?

Not according to the headline article’s own October 8, 2026 live update: it reports that AT&T shares were down 6.25%. A reported decline of that size is not naturally described as a steady session. However, the figure has not been checked against an independent exchange or market-data source for the update’s exact time, interval, or reference price. It should therefore be treated as the outlet’s claim, not a confirmed quote. October 8 headline article and live update

The available information also does not establish that Desroches’ retirement announcement caused any share-price movement. The filing dates to June, while the cited stock claim is from an October live update; timing alone cannot establish a causal link.

AT&T financial context

AT&T’s investor-relations page reports second-quarter 2026 revenue of $31.6 billion and free cash flow of $4.7 billion. The free-cash-flow figure is a company-reported non-GAAP measure; readers should use AT&T’s definitions and reconciliations when comparing it with other measures or periods. These results provide business context, not evidence that the CFO succession moved the stock. AT&T investor relations: second-quarter 2026 results

In a September 2026 interview, Fortune reported that AT&T invested more than $150 billion in wireless and wireline networks, including spectrum, over Desroches’ tenure. Fortune also reported that the company’s annual dividend payout declined from more than $15 billion in 2020 to about $8 billion, that 2025 free cash flow exceeded $16 billion, and that 2025 investment exceeded $22 billion. These are figures reported by Fortune in connection with its interview, not independently verified here. Fortune’s September 2026 interview with Desroches

What the transition does—and does not—tell investors

The filing establishes the planned handoff and its dates; it does not establish a change in AT&T’s strategy or the market’s response. A broader CFO turnover statistic does not resolve those questions either: Fortune reported that Russell Reynolds Associates’ Q1 2026 Global CFO Turnover Index found 60% of outgoing CFOs globally retired or moved to board roles in that quarter, compared with 56% a year earlier and a seven-year first-quarter average of 39%. That is a global statistic, not a forecast for AT&T or evidence about its stock. Fortune’s report on the Russell Reynolds Associates index

For the market claim, a definitive account would need a verified price source and the precise interval and comparison point behind the reported 6.25% move. Without those details, neither “steady” nor the reported decline should be presented as independently confirmed, and no investment conclusion follows from the succession alone.
