USV Raises $900 Million for Early- and Later-Stage Investing as AI Reshapes Its Strategy

Union Square Ventures announced $900 million in new funds on October 8, 2026. Bloomberg reports that $500 million is for an early-stage fund and $400 million for an opportunity fund for later-stage deals and follow-on investments. USV says the added capital will let it lead more rounds and support companies longer, while it expects to make roughly the same number of investments as before.

How USV’s $900 million is allocated

USV’s October 8 announcement confirms $900 million in new funds but does not give the split between them in its accessible text. Bloomberg’s October 8 report says the capital is divided as follows:

Fund Amount reported Purpose described
Early-stage fund $500 million (Bloomberg) Early-stage investments
Opportunity fund $400 million (Bloomberg) Later-stage deals and follow-on investment in existing portfolio companies

The reported $500 million early-stage fund is larger than the $275 million in early-stage funds USV raised in 2024, according to Bloomberg. USV also describes its last core fund as $275 million in its January 2025 post. These figures compare fund sizes; they do not establish how quickly either fund will be invested.

Why USV says it needs more capital

USV’s explanation centers on a change in startup economics. The firm says AI has made it easier to build companies, but competition for the strongest companies has intensified, producing larger funding rounds and higher prices. It says the new capital will give it more room to lead rounds, remain invested in companies longer, and back capital-intensive areas such as robotics, manufacturing, and energy.

That greater capacity is not, according to USV, a plan to increase the number of bets proportionally. The firm says it intends to make roughly the same number of investments as in previous funds, while bringing a strong view of the business, team, and product to each one.

Four themes in USV’s investment strategy

USV says it will remain thesis-driven and invest at the edge of large markets being changed by technology. Its announcement identifies four areas:

AI applications that reshape markets

USV is looking for applications that change how a market works, rather than simply applying AI to automate existing tasks. The firm summarizes this view with the statement, “We believe AI will obliterate markets, not automate them.” That is USV’s investment thesis, not evidence that the anticipated market changes have already occurred.

Data unlocked at the edge

“Data at the Edge” refers to information that becomes usable when AI or physical intelligence can interpret previously inaccessible offline data. USV points to robotics, manufacturing, and sensor networks as examples of settings where such data may matter.

More powerful intelligence with stronger alignment

Under “The Rebel Alliance,” USV describes consumers and enterprises seeking more capable intelligence with stronger alignment around trust, security, memory, and cost. The announcement names those priorities but does not define a separate product category or specify how it will measure alignment.

Energy to support growing demand

USV says the greater energy supply needed for these changes is part of its investment focus. The firm says an energy thesis it supported through a dedicated fund beginning in 2021 is now folded into its core fund.

What the partnership announcement establishes

Bloomberg describes USV’s general partnership as reduced to four investors. USV’s post names Michael Mignano as a new general partner and separately says Fred Wilson, Rebecca Kaden, Nick Grossman, and Nikhil Raman will make up the “core investment team” going forward. Those descriptions do not identify the same role, and the accessible announcement does not reconcile Bloomberg’s four-person GP characterization with its core-team wording.

USV also names Jared Hecht as a Venture Partner and Scott Belsky as a Product Advisory Partner. Those titles are distinct from general partner, so they should not be used to infer who makes up Bloomberg’s reported four-person partnership. The sources establish the reported count but do not establish an exact four-name GP list.

How this compares with USV’s earlier approach

In January 2024, USV described its approach as investing “at the edge of large markets being transformed by technological and societal pressures.” That post reported 14 funds raised and invested and more than 230 investments at that time; those are historical figures, not a current portfolio total. In January 2025, the firm characterized its 2024 Core Fund approach as “small fund, thesis driven, high conviction, and low velocity,” emphasizing long-term partnerships with a small number of teams.

The 2026 announcement retains the emphasis on theses and a relatively steady investment count, but pairs it with more capital for larger rounds, longer support, and capital-intensive sectors. USV’s own rationale is that the opportunity and competitive environment have changed, not that it intends to abandon selective investing.
