The DAC tells the host how quickly it needs audio data through feedback, while the USB connection can still use isochronous transfers.
What “asynchronous” means on a USB DAC
In USB Audio Class terminology, asynchronous describes the relationship between an audio endpoint’s clock and USB timing. An asynchronous endpoint produces or consumes audio according to an external clock or a free-running clock inside the device; its timing is not synchronized to USB Start Of Frame (SOF) signals. The USB-IF defines asynchronous isochronous endpoints as those whose data rate is locked to an external or free-running internal clock (USB Audio Class 1.0, section 3.3.1).

For playback, the computer sends audio samples to the DAC, but the DAC’s clock determines how quickly it consumes them. The host must adapt its sending rate so the device receives data at the rate it needs. Apple describes the device’s feedback as the mechanism for communicating that desired rate to the host (Apple Developer Documentation, TN3190).

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAsynchronous does not mean non-isochronous
These terms describe different parts of USB audio. Isochronous is the transfer type used for time-sensitive audio; asynchronous is the synchronization type that describes which clock governs the endpoint’s sample timing. An asynchronous USB DAC can therefore receive audio in isochronous transfers. It is not using “asynchronous” in the ordinary sense of sending data without waiting for a response.

- Plug and Play: No driver is required, just plug and play. USB bus-powered, no external power is required for this convenient sound card. *Note:Supports regular headphones with a resistance of less than 50 ohms, but does not support high-resistance headphones
Isochronous transfers prioritize predictable delivery for real-time data, with less error-recovery capability than transfer types designed to retry errors. Android’s USB audio documentation describes this trade-off (Android: USB digital audio).
How feedback keeps playback aligned
Because the DAC’s clock controls consumption, the host needs information about the device’s requested audio rate. Apple describes two approaches for USB audio output:

- 【USB external sound card audio adapter】This USB to aux adapter supports listening and speaking,Easily adds a 3.5mm TRRS aux port integrated microphone-in and audio out interface to your devices
- 【High Quality Sound】 Equipped with an advanced built-in DAC chip, this USB sound card supports both CTIA and OMIP standard headphones. This USB to Aux adapter delivers stable 16-bit/48kHz audio output and effective noise reduction, faithfully reproducing and enhancing the original sound quality. Note: The 3.5mm male microphone jack does not support TS or TRS connectors
- 【Wide Compatibility】USB to 3.5mm Jack Audio Adapter support TRRS headsets and microphones.USB male wide compatibility with Windows 10/9/8/7/Vista/XP,Linux,Mac OS X google Chromebook,Raspberry Pi, PS4,PS5 and Windows Surface 3 etc
- 【Plug and Play】USB Sound Adapter no driver required,USB headset adapter plug and play;the durable nylon braided cable of the USB audio adapter ensures stable transmission and allows you to use your 3.5mm headphones more conveniently.USB to 3.5 mm port will be automatically recognized by system in seconds
- 【Portable and Durable】USB to audio jack adapter is equipped with an aluminum shell. The nylon braided of the USB to 3.5mm jack audio adapter is more durable, smaller and lighter than other plastic shells and PVC cable USB audio adapter, ensuring a much longer lasting life
- Explicit feedback: The device sends feedback on a separate isochronous endpoint, indicating the rate the host should use.
- Implicit feedback: The host derives the needed rate from an input stream when that stream and the output share a clock.
In either case, feedback lets the host adjust packet delivery to the device’s rate. It does not change the fact that the samples travel over USB.
How asynchronous, adaptive and synchronous modes differ
The key distinction is which timing reference governs sample delivery and whether the host’s packet rate is adjusted to follow the audio endpoint.

| Synchronization type | What governs sample timing | Feedback and USB SOF relationship |
|---|---|---|
| Asynchronous | An external or device-local free-running clock | The device provides feedback so the host can adapt its packet rate; the endpoint is not synchronized to USB SOF. |
| Synchronous | USB SOF timing | The endpoint is synchronized to USB SOF; asynchronous-style device feedback is not what defines this mode. |
| Adaptive | The audio endpoint adapts its timing to the incoming USB data rate | The endpoint follows the incoming rate rather than setting it through asynchronous feedback; it is not the asynchronous clock relationship. |
The USB-IF specification defines the asynchronous and synchronous relationships to USB timing; Apple’s documentation explains explicit and implicit feedback. These labels describe timing behavior, not a ranking of DACs.
Does asynchronous USB audio sound better?
Not by itself. The design gives the DAC or its associated clock control of sample timing, but that fact alone does not prove that a particular DAC sounds better, eliminate all jitter, or establish audible superiority over other synchronization types. Android describes placing the clock close to the converter as a theoretical advantage, not a universal listening result (Android: USB digital audio).

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Sound quality depends on the device’s complete implementation, not just whether its specification uses the word “asynchronous.” Treat the term as a description of clocking and feedback behavior, not as a performance guarantee.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What to check in a DAC’s specifications
- Look for an explicit statement that the USB audio interface or playback endpoint uses asynchronous synchronization.
- Check the device’s technical documentation for its clock and feedback implementation; a generic claim about USB audio does not establish the synchronization type.
- Confirm compatibility with your computer or other USB host separately. The asynchronous label explains clock behavior, not support by every operating system, application or connection.
The USB-IF library lists the USB Audio Class 2.0 specification with errata and engineering change notices through September 14, 2026; the library entry is dated September 15, 2026 (USB-IF document library). That is specification context, not evidence of a DAC’s measured or audible performance.
