ASUS Vivobook: What Its Metal Chassis Claims Really Mean

ASUS calls some 2025 Vivobook S14 and S16 families metal-chassis models, but the Vivobook name does not guarantee an aluminium body. Check the exact SKU and distinguish a metal chassis from a metallic lid or metal-look finish.

Short answer: not every ASUS Vivobook is aluminium. ASUS describes some 2025 Vivobook S14 and S16 families as having a “durable metal chassis,” but that wording does not identify aluminium or confirm that every exterior panel is metal. Other Vivobook models are described with a metallic lid or a metal-look finish over an IMR plastic chassis. The material depends on the exact model and regional configuration.

Which Vivobook models does ASUS describe as having a metal chassis?

ASUS’s March 2025 launch announcements describe the Vivobook S14 S3407CA/VA and Vivobook S14/S16 M3407HA/M3607HA families as “featuring a durable metal chassis.” That supports calling those announced families metal-chassis Vivobooks; it does not establish that every Vivobook has the same construction.

ASUS gives the S14/S16 series a starting weight of 1.40 kg and a thickness of 1.59 cm in those launch releases. These are manufacturer-published series figures, not independent measurements, and should not be assumed for every configuration. See ASUS’s S14 launch announcement and S14/S16 launch announcement.

Does “metal chassis” mean the Vivobook is aluminium?

No. “Metal” does not name a particular metal or alloy. The cited ASUS announcements do not specify an aluminium alloy or provide a component-by-component materials breakdown for those models. It would therefore be more precise to say “metal chassis, according to ASUS” than “aluminium body” unless the specification for the exact SKU explicitly confirms aluminium.

How do a metallic lid and a metal-look finish differ?

ASUS uses narrower or different construction language for other Vivobooks, which is why appearance alone is not enough to identify the material.

ASUS wording What it establishes What it does not establish
“Metal chassis” ASUS describes the chassis of the named 2025 S14/S16 families as metal. The alloy, or whether every exterior panel is metal.
“Metallic lid” The claim concerns the lid. ASUS uses this wording for Vivobook 15X/15X OLED in its 2024 Q1 product guide. The material of the keyboard deck, base, or internal frame.
“Metal-look finish” The surface has a metal-like appearance. ASUS describes certain Vivobook Classic models this way and identifies an IMR plastic chassis. That the chassis itself is metal.

How to check the material for your exact Vivobook

  1. Find the full model code. Check the device label, purchase paperwork, or system information; “Vivobook 15” or “Vivobook S14” alone may not identify the configuration.
  2. Open the ASUS support or product page for your region. Search using the full model code rather than the broad family name.
  3. Read the construction wording literally. Distinguish a metal chassis from a metallic lid or a metal-look finish. If the page does not name aluminium, do not infer it from “metal.”
  4. Confirm the regional SKU. ASUS cautions that specifications vary by model, so a page for a similarly named model or a different market may not describe your unit. Consult the ASUS support site.

Does a metal chassis make a Vivobook a “powerhouse”?

Chassis material describes construction, not computing performance. The metal-chassis wording alone does not show that a laptop is faster or more durable than a plastic model. Performance depends on the particular processor, memory, cooling design, and configuration; those are separate questions from whether the exterior is metal.
