On an ASUS router, VPN Server lets you connect from away from home to resources on your home network. VPN Client makes the router connect outward to a VPN server, so supported devices at home can send traffic through that connection. Choose Server to reach home; choose Client to route home-device traffic through another VPN server.
How the two settings differ
| Setting | Connection direction | What it is for | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPN Server | From a remote device into your home network | Reach home-LAN resources while away. Depending on the server option, the remote device may also send its internet traffic through the home router. | A supported router and protocol, plus a publicly reachable WAN IP so remote devices can locate the router. (ASUS Support; ASUS Support) |
| VPN Client (also described in ASUS material as VPN Fusion) | From the home router out to a VPN server | Send supported home-network devices’ traffic through that server. This can be useful for devices such as smart TVs that may not support a VPN app. | A router that supports the relevant client protocol, plus the provider/server’s compatible credentials or configuration file. (ASUS Support; ASUS Support) |
These modes solve different problems; neither is inherently faster or more secure than the other. ASUS Support describes VPN clients as a way to connect to a VPN server and access private resources securely over a public network. The practical choice is whether you want to reach your home network from elsewhere or send home-device traffic through another VPN server.

What VPN Server does
With Server mode, the ASUS router hosts the VPN endpoint. A phone or laptop away from home runs the VPN client software and connects back to the router. Once connected, it can reach permitted home-network resources, such as devices or services on the LAN.
ASUS’s OpenVPN server instructions describe access choices that can include Local network only and Internet and local network. The first limits the purpose of the connection to reaching the home network. The second can let the remote client use the home router for internet access as well. Available choices depend on the router, protocol and firmware; consult the instructions for your exact setup. (ASUS OpenVPN server FAQ)

What VPN Client does
With Client mode, the router connects to a VPN server, often one provided by a VPN service. Supported devices on the home network can then use the router’s VPN connection without each needing its own VPN app. ASUS notes that this can extend VPN access to devices such as smart TVs and set-top boxes. (ASUS VPN FAQ)
The router’s client protocol must match what the VPN provider or server offers. For example, ASUS’s OpenVPN client instructions use a provider-supplied .ovpn configuration file. Confirm the connection type and obtain the necessary configuration or credentials from the provider before setup. (ASUS OpenVPN client FAQ)

Confirm your router model supports the feature
VPN server and client support varies across ASUS models, as do supported protocols. Check the specifications for the exact model rather than assuming that every ASUS router offers both modes or the protocol you need. ASUS directs users to its model specifications for both VPN Server and VPN Fusion support. (VPN Server support; VPN Fusion support)

Menu paths and available functions can change between firmware versions. ASUS’s OpenVPN server FAQ separates instructions for firmware earlier than 3.0.0.4.388.xxxx from instructions for version 3.0.0.4.388.xxxx and later. Use the current support instructions for your router and firmware rather than treating one interface path as universal. (ASUS OpenVPN server FAQ; ASUS firmware FAQ)

For Server mode, verify public WAN reachability
ASUS says a public WAN IP from your internet service provider is needed for remote devices to locate a router running VPN Server. If the router sits behind another network or does not have a publicly reachable WAN address, that prerequisite may not be met. Check with your ISP about your connection before relying on remote access. (ASUS OpenVPN server FAQ; ASUS VPN Server FAQ)
For Client mode, get compatible connection details
Ask the VPN provider or server operator which protocol the connection uses and obtain the matching configuration file or credentials. If the provider’s connection type is not supported by the router, you cannot configure that connection through the router’s VPN client feature. (ASUS VPN FAQ; ASUS OpenVPN client FAQ)

Choose by the result you want
- Reach a home device or service while away: look at VPN Server, then verify model support and public WAN reachability.
- Send traffic from supported home devices through a VPN server: look at VPN Client or VPN Fusion, then verify protocol compatibility and get the provider’s configuration details.
- Need both outcomes: they are distinct router functions, not two names for one setting. Check whether your particular model and firmware support the required server and client features.
