Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor most investors comparing these two approaches, the key trade-off is simplicity and diversification versus control and concentrated risk. An S&P 500 index fund offers exposure to hundreds of large U.S. companies through one fund; individual stocks let you choose specific businesses but make your results depend more on those choices. Neither guarantees a return, and the better fit depends on your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, and willingness to research and monitor holdings.
What you own with an S&P 500 fund
The S&P 500 is a benchmark, not a security you can buy directly. As the SEC explains, “You cannot invest directly in a market index, but because index funds track a market index they provide an indirect investment option.” You buy shares in a fund that seeks to track the index.

The index covers 500 constituent companies and weights them by float-adjusted market capitalization, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices’ methodology. Larger free-float market values therefore have more influence on the index than smaller ones. A fund may hold every index security or use sampling, and its performance can differ from the index.

This is diversification across large-cap U.S. stocks, not ownership of the entire U.S. or global market. An S&P 500 fund by itself also does not provide a complete mix of stocks, bonds, and cash. Diversification can lower overall portfolio risk, but it does not eliminate risk.

How the two approaches compare
| Consideration | S&P 500 index fund | Individual stocks |
|---|---|---|
| What determines holdings? | The fund tracks the index through full replication or sampling. The index’s weights reflect float-adjusted market capitalization. | You select the companies and decide how much to invest in each. |
| Diversification | Spreads exposure across the index’s large-cap U.S. companies, but remains tied to that market segment and its constituents. | Depends on the number and mix of companies selected. A small number of holdings can leave the portfolio more exposed to company-specific outcomes. |
| Control and effort | You choose the fund and its strategy, but generally do not choose the constituent weights. You still need to assess the fund’s fit and costs. | You control company selection and position sizes, and take on the work of researching and monitoring each holding. |
| Performance risks | Market risk remains. Fees, trading costs, sampling, and tracking error can cause the fund to lag its index. | Results depend on the securities chosen, timing, and concentration. No source establishes a reliable outcome for a particular investor’s stock-picking skill. |
| Costs to check | Expense ratio, fund transaction costs, brokerage or account charges, and any sales loads. | Commissions or other transaction fees and account costs; research also requires time. |
Both approaches involve costs that can reduce portfolio value. The SEC describes fund operating costs that are often charged indirectly through assets and expressed as an expense ratio, as well as transaction and ongoing charges. Buying and selling individual stocks can also involve transaction costs. Compare the actual products and account terms rather than assuming every index fund is cheaper.
What recent performance data does—and does not—show
S&P Dow Jones Indices’ Year-End 2025 SPIVA U.S. scorecard reports that 79% of active large-cap U.S. equity funds underperformed the S&P 500 during calendar year 2025. It also reports that 78.78% underperformed over the 10 years ending Dec. 31, 2025. These figures describe actively managed funds in defined categories and periods; they are not results for people choosing their own stocks and do not predict future performance. The scorecard cautions that past performance is no guarantee of future results. See the SPIVA scorecard and reports.

Index concentration can also change over time. In its scorecard data through Dec. 31, 2025, S&P Dow Jones Indices reported that the top five constituents contributed 78% of S&P 500 performance in Q1 2025 and 11% in Q4 2025. That difference illustrates that a capitalization-weighted index can be strongly influenced by a small group of its largest constituents at some times, but the degree of influence is not fixed.

An index fund may fit if you want broad large-cap exposure
- You want exposure to many large U.S. companies without choosing each one.
- You prefer a less company-by-company approach and are comfortable with the index’s market-cap weighting and defined U.S. large-cap scope.
- You are willing to check whether you also need other exposure, such as small-cap, international, bond, or cash holdings, elsewhere in your portfolio.
Individual stocks may fit if you want direct selection and accept the work
- You want to choose particular companies and set each position’s size yourself.
- You can research businesses, monitor your holdings, and tolerate the possibility that a few companies will have a large effect on your results.
- You understand that choosing individual stocks does not guarantee outperformance.
There is no universal winner. The SEC notes that an investor’s asset mix depends on risk tolerance and investing timeframe, so consider how either choice fits with the rest of your portfolio rather than treating this as an all-or-nothing decision.

What to check before buying
- Review the fund’s documents. Read the prospectus and latest shareholder report for the fund’s strategy, risks, index makeup, and actual costs. The SEC says these documents are available from the fund provider or a financial professional and through EDGAR.
- Compare total costs. Check the expense ratio, transaction charges, sales loads, and account-level fees. For individual stocks, include any trading fees and account costs.
- Confirm the exposure. Ask whether large-cap U.S. stocks are the exposure you intend to add, and whether your other holdings already provide similar exposure.
- Consider taxes in your circumstances. Tax treatment is not the same for every product, transaction, account, jurisdiction, or investor, so avoid assuming one approach is universally more tax-efficient.
The SEC’s investor guidance on fees and expenses and overview of mutual funds and ETFs can help explain what to review. This comparison is educational information, not individualized investment advice.
