Asus Googlebook 14 Review: Promising Hardware, Unproven Software

The Asus Googlebook 14 has unusually portable hardware, a 3K OLED touchscreen and broad connectivity. Its app compatibility, battery life and sustained performance still need scrutiny.

The Asus Googlebook 14 pairs a 0.99kg starting weight with a 14-inch 3K OLED touchscreen and a generous mix of ports. That makes the hardware immediately appealing. The open question is whether Googlebook OS and its app support are ready for the work you need to do: early impressions are encouraging, but they are not a full compatibility review or a completed test of battery life and sustained performance.

What the Asus Googlebook 14 is

The ASUS CX9406CAA is a 14-inch laptop running Googlebook OS, a new platform described as bringing Android technology together with ChromeOS desktop foundations. It is not simply a conventional Chromebook, so existing assumptions about app and extension compatibility should be checked against your own workflow.

ASUS’s US specifications list a Core Ultra 5 325 processor, 16GB of onboard LPDDR5X memory, 256GB of PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage, a 14-inch 2880 × 1800 OLED touchscreen, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 and a 70Wh battery. The advertised starting weight is 0.99kg (2.18lb). Configuration varies: ASUS’s launch announcement describes options up to Core Ultra 7, 64GB of memory and 1TB of storage, while The Gadgeteer’s early review unit had 16GB and 512GB. Check the exact local model number and configuration before buying. ASUS US specifications; ASUS launch announcement; The Gadgeteer’s first impressions.

Why the hardware stands out

Light, thin construction

ASUS says the chassis is made from CNC-machined magnesium-aluminum alloy with Nano Ceramic Technology; its launch materials give a starting thickness of 10.9mm and weight of 0.99kg. Tom’s Guide and MobileSyrup both described the laptop as impressively light and solid in event or early hands-on coverage. Those observations are useful first impressions, not independent durability testing. ASUS launch announcement; Tom’s Guide hands-on; MobileSyrup hands-on.

A high-resolution OLED touchscreen

The US specification page lists a 2880 × 1800 OLED touchscreen, anti-glare glass and 450 nits. ASUS’s launch materials also describe a 120Hz refresh rate and up to 1,000 nits peak HDR brightness. These brightness figures may refer to different measures or SKU details: peak HDR brightness is not the same as typical sustained brightness, so confirm the panel specification for the exact configuration on sale. Tom’s Guide found the screen colorful and said its anti-glare treatment helped under event lighting, while noting that more time and lab testing were needed. ASUS US specifications; ASUS launch announcement; Tom’s Guide hands-on.

Useful ports and input features

ASUS lists two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, HDMI and a 3.5mm audio jack. Its materials also describe a backlit keyboard, a six-sensor haptic touchpad and a six-speaker system. The Gadgeteer praised the touchpad and speakers in its early use; that is an initial impression rather than a comparative test. ASUS includes a 65W adapter, and the port selection means accessories are optional rather than a prerequisite for a basic setup. Googlebook OS: the main question to investigate

The promise is a laptop platform that draws on Android and ChromeOS, including ways to connect with an Android phone. ASUS has announced phone-to-laptop continuity, casting supported Android phone apps, and Gemini features such as Magic Pointer and proactive suggestions. Treat these as announced capabilities: supported phone models, regional availability and actual feature behavior matter, and the materials do not establish that every Android phone gets the same experience. Early software reports are mixed but necessarily limited. The Gadgeteer said everyday apps and many Chrome extensions worked in its early use, but one ChatGPT extension did not behave as expected. MobileSyrup also described its software view as preliminary and said it was too early to tell whether the new OS would help or hinder. These reports are signals, not a complete compatibility survey. Before relying on the laptop, check that your essential desktop apps, web services, extensions, peripherals and work or school sign-in tools behave as needed. The Gadgeteer’s first impressions; MobileSyrup hands-on.

Battery life and performance are not settled

ASUS claims up to 18 hours of battery life from the 70Wh battery. That is a manufacturer figure, not an independently verified endurance result. The early coverage available from The Gadgeteer specifically says battery endurance and sustained performance need more time; it does not provide a completed battery test or independent benchmark result. Do not use the 18-hour claim as a guarantee of what you will get in your own workload. ASUS launch announcement; The Gadgeteer’s first impressions.

Price and whether it is worth it

At launch, ASUS’s US page showed a price of US$1,299.99 and pre-order status; Tom’s Guide reported a US$1,299 starting price. MobileSyrup reported Canadian availability starting at C$1,799 on October 5, 2026. Those are launch-era prices, not a guarantee of current stock, price or configuration. At that premium price, judge the laptop on the combination rather than the OLED panel alone: its low starting weight, screen, port selection, desired configuration, local price and Android-phone features all matter. Compare it with a Chromebook or another laptop by checking the apps and extensions you rely on, not by assuming that Googlebook OS handles every Chromebook workload identically. The Asus Googlebook 14 looks like a compelling piece of portable hardware, but the software’s fit for your needs remains the deciding factor.
