The ASUS Googlebook 14 makes a strong first impression as a remarkably light 14-inch laptop, but its new Googlebook OS still has questions to answer. In a short hands-on, MobileSyrup’s Jonathan Lamont praised the screen, speakers and touchpad, while struggling to install Linux Firefox and finding phone-app mirroring too laggy to enjoy. Those are early observations, not a full review or a verdict on every app.
What the ASUS Googlebook 14 is—and what it costs
The ASUS Googlebook 14 is model CX9406CAA, running Googlebook OS. MobileSyrup reported a Canadian launch price starting at C$1,799 on October 5, 2026, and listed ASUS, Amazon.ca, Best Buy, Canada Computers, Costco and Staples among the retailers. That is launch-date reporting, not a guarantee of today’s price, stock or configuration; check the retailer for current details.

Specifications vary by market and model. ASUS’s US specification page for CX9406CAA lists a Core Ultra 5 325 processor, 16 GB of onboard LPDDR5X memory and a 256 GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD. MobileSyrup described the broader lineup as offering Core Ultra 5 or 7 Series 3 options, up to 16 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of storage. These descriptions should not be combined into a single universal configuration; confirm the local SKU before buying. ASUS’s US specifications also warn that specifications and availability can vary by model and market.

ASUS lists a starting weight of 0.99 kg (2.18 lb), a 14-inch OLED touchscreen, a 70 Wh battery and two Thunderbolt 4 ports with USB4 and display support. The listed configuration also has two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, a 3.5 mm audio jack, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0. ASUS rates the Intel AI Boost NPU at up to 47 TOPS; that is a stated processor capability, not a measure of overall laptop speed.

In his initial handling, Lamont found the nano-ceramic magnesium-aluminum chassis textured but not excessively grippy, and described the laptop as very thin and light. He also praised the OLED display, six-speaker audio system and six-sensor haptic touchpad. These are hands-on impressions rather than independent measurements: the article did not report battery-runtime or performance testing.
Googlebook OS combines Android technology with desktop foundations
Google describes Googlebook as a new laptop category built on the Android technology stack and desktop foundations from ChromeOS. The company says it is designed for Gemini Intelligence and closer integration with Android phones. Its announced capabilities include Android apps, desktop Chrome with extensions, an isolated Linux environment and creative apps. Google also describes Continue On for task handoff, access to phone files through the Files app, and Cast My Apps for opening phone apps in desktop windows. These are Google’s platform claims, not features independently verified in Lamont’s brief test.

Google also says the system shares ChromeOS security architecture, including a Titan hardware root of trust, defense in depth and on-device malware detection. It describes a Level 5 security-certified pKVM hypervisor for the isolated Linux environment. Google’s announcement promises feature drops and updates for up to 10 years; “up to” is the company’s claim, not a guarantee established by the hands-on article. What felt rough in the first hands-on
Linux Firefox did not install
Lamont says he installed Android Firefox but could not get the Linux desktop version installed after repeated attempts. He also noted that it was his first time using Googlebook OS and allowed that he might have missed a step. This is a useful warning if you depend on a particular Linux desktop app, but it is not evidence that Linux apps generally fail or that Firefox cannot run on every Googlebook configuration.

Phone-app mirroring had latency and text issues
In the apps he tried, Lamont found text-rendering problems in most mirrored apps and enough latency to make the feature unappealing. The Google apps he tested looked fine. That limited sample does not establish how all apps, phones or software versions behave, but it makes app mirroring a feature to verify with your own workflow rather than assume will be seamless.
Google’s description says the phone and laptop work together “seamlessly.” The hands-on suggests that the experience still needs to be judged app by app; the promotional wording is not a guarantee of flawless behavior.

Who should consider it—and who should wait
It may suit buyers who value portability and Android integration
The mix of a lightweight chassis, OLED touchscreen and Google-promoted phone connections could appeal to someone whose daily work is mainly in web and Android apps. If your essential apps are available in those forms, the hardware looks promising based on the initial handling. Confirm that the exact apps and phone features you rely on work as expected before committing.

If your routine depends on Linux desktop software, a particular browser build or reliable interaction with mirrored phone apps, the early Firefox and casting observations make compatibility a key buying question. The article is too limited to say whether the problems persist, so test the software you need or wait for more extensive use reports rather than treating these first thoughts as a final recommendation.

Organizations should account for the management gap
Google says the 2026 launch is aimed at personal consumer use and does not yet support domain enrollment or centralized fleet management. The company says comprehensive management capabilities are planned to begin rolling out in the second half of 2027. That timing matters to schools and businesses that require centrally managed devices; Google’s administrator guidance also says existing ChromeOS devices continue to receive support through their supported lifetimes. Google’s administrator guidance explains the current limitation and planned rollout.
