It is a poor fit if you need multi-gigabit Ethernet, built-in Wi-Fi, PoE, or the deep customization of a DIY firewall.
This assessment draws on ServeTheHome’s January 12, 2025 quick look by Rohit Kumar. ASUS supplied the review units and sponsored that article, so its hands-on impressions and conclusions should be read in that context.
What the EBG15 is
The EBG15 is a fanless, wired-only router measuring 121 × 75 × 26 mm and weighing 250 g. Its small enclosure has rubber feet and mounting points, making it suitable for cramped installations such as an RV, van, trailer, kiosk or small shop.

Because it has no wireless radios, you connect a separate access point, mesh node or existing Wi-Fi system to its LAN ports. The router handles routing, firewalling and WAN management; it does not replace the access point that provides Wi-Fi to phones, laptops or cameras.
Ports and hardware
| Item | Specification | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| WAN | One 1GbE port | For a primary broadband connection. |
| LAN | Four 1GbE ports | For wired clients, switches and access points. |
| Changeable WAN/LAN | Two of the LAN ports can be reassigned | Enables additional WAN links; ASUS advertises up to three Ethernet WAN ports when configured that way. |
| USB | One USB 3.2 Gen 1 port | Supports USB storage functions and tethering options listed by ASUS. |
| Processor and memory | 1.8GHz dual-core ARMv8, 512MB RAM, 256MB flash | Vendor-listed specifications, not an independent performance test. |
| Power | 18W supplied adapter | This is the adapter’s rating, not a measured power-consumption result. |
All Ethernet ports are gigabit. No surfaced test establishes throughput, latency, VPN speed or power draw, so the specifications should not be treated as measured performance.

Features that matter in a small installation
Multi-WAN and failover
The two configurable WAN/LAN ports allow dual-WAN or broader multi-WAN groupings. ASUS also lists WAN aggregation, load-balancing and failover functions. A USB-connected phone or mobile broadband device can provide another backup path through the tethering features listed on ASUS’s specification page. Actual failover behavior depends on the service providers, modem or phone and your configuration.
VPN, VLAN and firewall controls
ASUS lists OpenVPN and WireGuard clients and servers, VPN Fusion, VLAN support, firewall controls, DMZ and IPv6 settings. These are available functions, not proof of a particular security level or encrypted throughput. Use current firmware, strong credentials and only the services you actually need.

USB storage and sharing
A USB drive can be shared over the network. ASUS lists media-server, Samba, FTP and shared-folder functions in addition to 4G/5G tethering. The available information does not establish compatibility with a particular drive, filesystem, storage speed or backup performance, so treat USB storage as a convenience rather than a tested NAS replacement.
Administration and setup
ServeTheHome describes phone-based or web setup, a dashboard and controls for DHCP, multi-WAN, port forwarding, VPN, DMZ, IPv6, firewall rules, USB services and firmware updates. The official user guide explains that port forwarding redirects incoming traffic to a LAN computer or service; menu names can vary with firmware, so follow the guide for the version installed on your unit.

Who is it suited to?
- Mobile and temporary sites: RVs, vans, trailers, market stalls and small stands where a silent, low-footprint router is useful.
- Small premises: a shop, office or compact space with one or two access points and mostly sub-gigabit internet.
- Backup-conscious users: people combining fixed broadband with a second WAN or phone hotspot.
- Wired-first networks: installations where Wi-Fi is intentionally handled by separate, better-positioned access points.
ServeTheHome’s examples include camera-equipped mobile setups and connections in roughly the 100–300Mbps range. Those are suitability examples, not tested installations or guarantees for every service, VPN or camera workload.
Where the EBG15 falls short
- No multi-gigabit Ethernet: every network port is 1GbE, so faster-than-gigabit broadband or LAN transfers require another router class.
- No built-in Wi-Fi: budget for a separate access point, mesh system or wireless router in access-point mode.
- No PoE output: cameras and ceiling-mounted access points need a PoE switch or injectors. ASUS’s EBP15 is an optional PoE+ switch, not a requirement for operating the EBG15.
- Less DIY flexibility: OPNsense or pfSense on suitable hardware can expose broader packages and tuning, at the cost of more setup and maintenance.
How it compares with the main alternatives
| Approach | Best when you need | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| EBG15 plus separate access point | Small, silent wired routing with multi-WAN and modular Wi-Fi | Additional device, cabling and cost; no multi-gigabit ports. |
| Integrated Wi-Fi router | One-box installation and built-in wireless | Less flexible access-point placement and potentially fewer WAN options. |
| Mesh Wi-Fi system | Whole-space wireless coverage with simple expansion | Higher system cost and wireless backhaul considerations. |
| OPNsense or pfSense appliance | Advanced firewall policy, packages and customization | More complex hardware selection, configuration and upkeep. |
| Ubiquiti-style gateway and AP system | Centralized management across gateway, switches and access points | Different ecosystem, hardware requirements and total-cost profile. |
Compare the options on WAN count and failover, port speed, built-in Wi-Fi, VPN and VLAN requirements, management complexity, noise, footprint and the full system cost—including any switch or access point.

Verdict
The EBG15 is a sensible compact router for a modest, wired network that values silence, simple administration and WAN flexibility. Its gigabit-only ports and lack of Wi-Fi define the buying decision: add an access point and possibly a PoE switch, or choose an integrated or multi-gigabit platform if those capabilities are required. ServeTheHome’s positive hands-on conclusion comes from a sponsored review of ASUS-supplied units, and no controlled head-to-head test or independent throughput measurement was reported.
