Since Astro 5, output: 'hybrid' is no longer a separate output setting: static output is the default, and individual routes can be rendered on demand when they need request-time data or personalization. Islands solve a related but different problem—adding interactivity or deferring a component, not choosing how an entire route is rendered.
What Astro hybrid rendering meant
In Astro 4, output: 'hybrid' described “Building a static site with a few server-side rendered pages,” according to Astro’s Astro 4 rendering modes guide. The idea was static-first: generate most pages ahead of time, while rendering selected pages on the server for behavior that depends on a request.

That phrase remains useful as an architectural description of a static-first site with selected request-time routes. It should not be read as a current Astro configuration name without checking the project’s version.

Astro 5 merged the former hybrid and static output configurations into one static configuration. Astro’s Astro 5 upgrade guide explains that the static configuration now works like the former hybrid option. The Astro 5.0 release announcement, published December 3, 2024, describes the earlier hybrid approach and the later simplification.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a current project, think in terms of route-level rendering choices rather than a separate hybrid mode: pages can be pre-rendered by default, while routes that need request-time behavior can be configured for on-demand rendering. If you are maintaining an Astro 4 project or reading older guides, the historical output: 'hybrid' label may still appear.
Choose rendering based on what each route needs
Astro’s static rendering is the default starting point. Choose on-demand rendering for a route when its output must respond to request-time data, personalization, or other server behavior. If most routes need that behavior, a server-first output is a more natural fit than treating nearly every page as an exception.

- Pre-render a route when its content can be generated ahead of time and does not need to vary with each request.
- Render a route on demand when the response needs information available only at request time, such as visitor-specific content.
- Check deployment compatibility before choosing on-demand rendering: Astro requires an adapter for it, and the adapter must suit the deployment runtime.
- Keep the scope narrow when possible: if only one component needs server-rendered dynamic content, a server island may be enough instead of making the entire route request-driven.
Astro’s on-demand rendering and adapter guide identifies adapter options for Node.js, Vercel, Netlify, and Cloudflare. Support and setup can vary with Astro’s version and the target environment, so check the current documentation for the project’s version before configuring deployment.
Islands add component behavior, not a rendering mode
Astro’s islands architecture starts with pages that render mostly as HTML, then adds JavaScript only to components that need browser-side interaction. Astro’s islands documentation puts it this way: “Astro components are the building blocks of your page template. They render to static HTML with no client-side runtime.” Developers choose which components run in the browser and hydrate them separately.

A client island is therefore about interactive browser UI and when its JavaScript loads. It does not, by itself, make a route render on demand on the server. A route can be pre-rendered and still contain a client island.
Use server islands for isolated dynamic content
A server island lets an individual server-rendered component be deferred while Astro returns the page shell and fallback content. The component’s dynamic or personalized output is fetched separately. Astro’s server islands guide describes uses such as a visitor-specific avatar or changing e-commerce details.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
This is a rendering and caching pattern: the main page content can be cached more aggressively while the dynamic component is handled separately. It does not guarantee a particular speed improvement, and it is distinct from a client island, which hydrates browser-side interaction.
A practical decision path
- Identify the varying content. Decide whether it changes by request, user, or other server-side context, or whether it is the same for every visitor.
- Choose the smallest rendering scope. Pre-render stable routes. Use on-demand route rendering when the route response itself needs request-time behavior; consider a server island when only one component does.
- Separate server needs from browser interaction. Use a client island for UI that must become interactive in the browser. It does not replace server rendering when data must be personalized at request time.
- Confirm the adapter and runtime. For on-demand rendering, verify that an Astro adapter supports the target deployment environment and the project version.
- Use version-correct configuration. Do not copy
output: 'hybrid'into a current Astro setup as though it were still a distinct mode; consult the relevant version’s rendering and migration documentation.
These choices are about matching rendering behavior to route and component requirements, not choosing a universal performance winner. Astro’s cited documentation does not establish a head-to-head benchmark for static, on-demand, client-island, or server-island approaches.
