You can add a contact form to a static Astro site without building or operating an application backend: render a normal HTML form and send its POST request to a hosted form endpoint. If your site is on Netlify, Netlify Forms may be a convenient alternative, but Astro-rendered forms need to be discoverable in the build output. For custom processing, use an Astro endpoint or Action with on-demand hosting; a static build alone cannot handle live submissions.
What “without a backend” means for an Astro contact form
A static Astro page can display fields and submit them, but the page itself does not receive or process a live submission. The form needs a receiver: either a hosted form service or server code running on demand. With a hosted endpoint, you avoid operating your own application server, though a third party handles the submitted data.

For the smallest setup, use a hosted endpoint. Choose Netlify Forms if Netlify is already your deployment platform and its build-time form detection suits your Astro rendering mode. Use Astro server code when you need custom handling and are prepared to deploy an on-demand runtime.

Option 1: Post a standard HTML form to a hosted endpoint
This is the most portable approach for a static Astro site. Create a form with your provider, configure its recipient, and copy the endpoint the provider gives you into the form’s action. The endpoint is specific to your account and form, so do not copy a made-up URL from an example.

Formspree’s Astro guide demonstrates this pattern: static HTML posts to a configured Formspree endpoint, which can forward submissions to an email recipient. The form does not need client-side JavaScript or server-side code for the basic workflow. See Formspree’s Astro guide.

</form>Replace YOUR_PROVIDER_ENDPOINT with the endpoint supplied for your own form. Keep the fields’ name attributes meaningful: those names are sent with the submission. Labels should be explicitly associated with their controls, and an email input plus a message textarea covers the basic contact use case. The browser’s required and type="email" checks help visitors catch mistakes, but they are not server-side validation.

A normal HTML POST keeps the form usable without JavaScript. Add client-side code only if it improves the experience—for example, to show an inline submission status—and preserve a usable submission path if that code fails.

Form submissions go to the hosted provider, so check its current privacy terms, data retention practices, spam controls, and service limits before collecting personal information. Those policies and limits can change; do not assume that a basic form example establishes them.

Option 2: Use Netlify Forms when Netlify hosts the site
Netlify Forms can receive a plain HTML form without a separate custom server handler. Enable form detection in Netlify and identify the form with a unique name and data-netlify="true" (or the documented netlify attribute). Netlify’s setup guidance explains that it injects a hidden form-name input into parsed HTML. A static HTML form can then submit without extra JavaScript. Follow the current Netlify Forms setup guide.
Astro’s build output is the important caveat
Netlify detects forms during the build, so adding the attribute to an Astro component is not always enough: the form must be present in the HTML Netlify scans. Netlify’s Astro support guidance says to add a hidden copy of each form in public/__forms.html, with field names matching the real form. That article also says routes configured for on-demand rendering or output: "server" are not scanned at build time. Consult the current Netlify guidance for using forms in Astro and follow the instructions for your rendering mode.
- Give each distinct form a unique name.
- Make the hidden registration form’s field names match the fields visitors submit.
- Check the deployed build and confirm Netlify has detected the form before relying on submissions.
Option 3: Handle submissions in an Astro endpoint or Action
Choose this route if you need code-controlled processing, such as custom validation or application-specific handling. It is not a backend-free static arrangement: the handler needs a deployment runtime that can execute code on request.

Endpoint for a custom API route
Astro distinguishes static endpoints, generated at build time, from server endpoints that run for requests. In static mode, a custom endpoint must opt out of prerendering to handle live submissions, and the deployed platform needs an adapter or equivalent on-demand runtime. See the Astro endpoints guide.

Astro’s API form recipe shows a browser form intercepted with JavaScript and sent to a POST endpoint. As the documentation puts it: “To send form data to an API endpoint instead, you must intercept the form submission using JavaScript.” The endpoint can read submitted fields with request.formData(); validate values on the server before using them. Action for a server-rendered page
Astro Actions provide another server-side handling path. Standard POST form actions can work without client-side JavaScript, but the page must be rendered on demand. Review the Astro Actions guide and make sure your deployment supports the required runtime.

Test the deployed form, not just the local page
A form that renders in development is not proof that its receiver is configured correctly. After deployment, submit a test message and verify the expected confirmation or redirect, delivery to the intended recipient or handler, and the provider’s spam handling. For Netlify, also confirm the deployed build registered the form. No live submission test is implied by the examples above.
