If Astra restarts a video instead of advancing, first check whether the file has actually ended or whether a long video exits partway through. Then confirm you’re using Astra on a supported Fire TV running Vega OS, check the episode autoplay setting, and update Astra if needed. The symptom alone does not identify one cause; the right fix depends on when playback restarts and what your app and server report.
First, confirm your Astra version and Fire TV platform
Astra is a Jellyfin client for supported Fire TV devices running Vega OS. Astra’s help documentation covers version 1.4.0 on Vega OS 1.2 or later; it says older Android-based Fire TV devices should use the regular Jellyfin app instead. Check Settings > About in Astra for the installed version and build. Astra’s project repository records version 1.4.0 as released on September 8, 2026.

If you are on an earlier Astra version, update before changing other settings. Astra says an Appstore release can take a day or two to reach a device. The official Astra help page is scoped to Astra 1.4.0 and Vega OS 1.2 or later.

“Why does Astra keep restarting the video instead of playing the next file?” can describe different behaviors. Note whether playback returns to the beginning, exits to the menu, or stops only when one episode ends. These distinctions point to different checks; the available Astra documentation does not establish one cause for every restart.

How to get Astra to play the next episode
- Open Settings > Playback.
- Find Next episode autoplay and enable it if you want Astra to advance automatically.
- Set the countdown to your preference, then let an episode finish to check whether the next one starts.
Astra’s help page describes an adjustable countdown and says: “Astra stops to ask after three episodes in a row rather than running all night on its own.” Autoplay is for episodes; movies do not automatically advance to another file. If the setting is enabled but an episode still fails to advance, record what happens at the episode boundary and continue with the diagnostics below.
If a long video exits before it finishes
Astra’s help page has a troubleshooting entry for a long movie that stops partway through and returns to the menu; it says the issue was fixed in version 1.4.0. The project repository describes it as a Fire TV lifecycle/resource issue during prolonged playback. That may match a long video that exits early, but it does not, by itself, explain a restart at every file boundary.

The repository describes one reported title stopping after 61 minutes and physical-device acceptance playback lasting 130 minutes for the 1.4.0 fix. Those are project-specific incident and validation details, not a general failure rate or a guarantee for every device or file. If you are already on 1.4.0 and can reproduce an early exit, capture the session details before reporting it.
If playback also buffers or stutters
Use these checks when the restart comes with buffering or stuttering. They can help diagnose streaming performance, but Astra’s documentation does not identify them as a universal cure for a restart.

- Open Stats for Nerds during playback. Note the codecs, selected audio track, bitrate, buffer, and dropped frames.
- In Settings > Playback, verify that Server transcoding reflects what your Jellyfin server can do.
- Run Test server connection and note its bitrate recommendation.
- Change Max streaming bitrate only if the playback evidence supports it; avoid treating a lower limit as the default fix for an unexplained restart.
If you recently selected subtitles and the problem began then, include that detail. Astra 1.4.0 draws ordinary text subtitles itself; picture-based subtitles and heavily styled ASS/SSA may require server burn-in and rebuilding the stream. Without a connection to subtitle selection or a reload/buffering symptom, subtitle conversion is not established as the likely explanation.

- Astra version and build from Settings > About, plus your Fire TV model and Vega OS version.
- Jellyfin server version, the server’s transcoding status, and the transcoding hardware in use.
- The affected file’s container, video and audio codecs, and resolution.
- Whether the same file plays in another Jellyfin client.
- Whether the connection is local or over the internet, and whether a VPN is involved.
- The Jellyfin server log covering the failed playback session.
- When the interruption occurs: during a long file, at the end of an episode, or alongside buffering; also note the selected audio track and subtitle state.
