In this context, “ASP” means application service provider, not another organization with the same initials. Historical sources describe its aims and membership, but do not establish whether ASPIC still operates or has a successor.
What did “ASP” mean?
An application service provider deployed, hosted, and managed software applications, then rented access to those applications to end users over the Internet. The distinction was about how software was delivered and managed—not simply where an application was hosted. WIPO’s industry primer describes this model.

What did the ASP Industry Consortium do?
ASPIC aimed to promote the application service provider industry. WIPO describes its work as sponsoring research, promoting best practices, developing common definitions, educating the marketplace about the model and its measurable benefits, and providing a forum for discussion. WIPO’s report identifies independent software vendors, network service providers, application service providers, and emerging business models and supporting sectors among the technology sectors it represented. This is a sector-level description, not a complete member list.

- ASPIC’s Research Committee sponsored a survey on service-level agreements.
- The consortium collaborated with the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center on a white paper about conflict management in the ASP industry.
Both activities are described in WIPO’s report.
When was it founded, and how large did it become?
WIPO sources give different founding months and membership figures. They are historical reports from different points in time, not current statistics.

| Source | Founding date reported | Membership reported |
|---|---|---|
| WIPO report | May 1999 | More than 1,000 member companies; the publication date is not established in the accessed record. |
| WIPO Magazine, 2001 | June 1999 | More than 700 companies in 30 countries had joined, as reported in 2001. |
The sources do not explain the one-month discrepancy. Neither figure should be treated as a current membership count.
Is ASPIC still active?
The available WIPO material supports a historical account of the consortium, but does not establish whether it continues to operate or whether another organization succeeded it. It is therefore safest to describe ASPIC as a historical industry group rather than call it active or dissolved.
