ASIC Mining Rigs Explained: What They Do and How to Read Their Specs

An ASIC mining rig is dedicated hardware built to mine using a particular algorithm. Learn what is inside one and how to interpret its key specifications.

An ASIC mining rig is a purpose-built computer that repeatedly performs calculations for a specific cryptocurrency mining algorithm. The term can mean the specialized chips inside it or, informally, the complete machine: mining boards, a control board, power supply and cooling.

What makes a mining rig an ASIC?

ASIC stands for application-specific integrated circuit. Unlike a general-purpose computer, an ASIC miner is designed to run a particular algorithm rather than switch freely among unrelated computing tasks or mining algorithms. For Bitcoin mining, the hardware performs SHA-256 calculations; a machine designed for a different algorithm is not automatically suitable for Bitcoin.

The complete rig is more than its ASIC chips. It commonly includes hash boards carrying the chips, a control board that manages the unit, a power supply and cooling to remove the heat produced during operation.

What does an ASIC rig do when mining?

In Bitcoin mining, the machine performs computational work used to process transactions and help secure the network. Mining software coordinates the work. A miner can work alone or contribute its hashing power to a pool. Pool participants combine resources and generally share proceeds in proportion to contributed hashing power; pooling reduces the variability of payouts compared with waiting for a solo block.

How to interpret an ASIC miner’s specifications

  • Algorithm: Confirms which mining work the machine is built to perform. Compare hashrate only among machines designed for the same algorithm.
  • Hashrate: The number of hash attempts the unit can perform per second. It describes computing capacity, not electricity cost or earnings by itself.
  • Wall power: The power the machine draws at the electrical supply. Facility needs can be higher because cooling and other supporting infrastructure also use energy.
  • Efficiency: For SHA-256 miners, joules per terahash (J/TH) expresses energy use relative to hashing output. A lower figure indicates less energy per unit of hashing under the stated conditions.
  • Installation conditions: Check electrical input, temperature, humidity, altitude, noise, physical dimensions and the exact model revision. Manufacturer figures apply under specified conditions and may have stated tolerances.

Example: Bitmain Antminer S21 Pro specifications

Bitmain’s 2024 specification for the S21 Pro lists SHA-256 mining for BTC/BCH, a typical hashrate of 234 TH/s, typical wall power of 3,510 W at 25°C, and typical wall efficiency of 15 J/TH. These are model-specific figures, not characteristics of ASIC rigs generally. Bitmain says actual hashrate may fluctuate by ±3%, and actual wall power and efficiency by ±5%. Consult the manufacturer’s specification for the exact revision and its full operating and electrical conditions before planning an installation.

Does an ASIC’s hashrate tell you whether mining is profitable?

No. Hashrate alone does not establish profitability. Any estimate also depends on electricity cost, network reward, network difficulty and total network hashrate; cooling and other facility energy use affect the total electricity requirement. Those inputs change, so a nameplate hashrate or model definition cannot establish current returns. The IEA’s analysis of Bitcoin mining energy use identifies hardware specifications, network conditions and non-IT infrastructure among the factors affecting energy use; it is not a current estimate of network consumption.

What to compare when evaluating two rigs

Compare machines that mine the same algorithm, then assess their hashrate together with wall power and efficiency. Also verify electrical requirements, cooling and operating conditions, noise, dimensions and exact revision. A higher hashrate alone does not show that one unit is a better economic choice.
