Ascension Island’s green summit is largely a human creation. Beginning in 1847, a planting programme proposed by Kew botanist Joseph Hooker turned treeless Green Mountain into a humid, tree-covered cloud-forest landscape. The trees did not manufacture weather, but their canopies intercepted cloud and rain, while roots and leaf litter built soil and helped retain water. That intervention secured a more reliable freshwater environment—while also creating serious problems for Ascension’s native plants that conservation workers are still trying to resolve.
How Ascension Island became green
Ascension is a remote volcanic island in the South Atlantic. Its highest point, Green Mountain, rises to 859 metres. Government biodiversity material says precipitation on the summit is approximately three to four times higher than in lower parts of the island because the mountain regularly traps cloud.

That natural cloud capture gave 19th-century planners an opportunity. The island’s garrison and residents needed dependable freshwater, yet the summit was not covered by a mature forest. Joseph Hooker of Kew Gardens developed a plan after Charles Darwin visited Ascension in 1836. Shipments of trees and shrubs began in 1847, bringing plants from several parts of the world.
The National Park management plan records more than 220 species arriving over the following years, while the island government’s Green Mountain history records more than 330 specimens sent by Kew. The aim was practical rather than ornamental: establish vegetation that could intercept mist, improve thin volcanic soils and make the island more hospitable.

How the planting changed the mountain
Cloud-forest formation proceeded through feedback between plants and their environment. Leaves and branches caught droplets from passing cloud, allowing water to drip onto the ground instead of blowing away. Roots held the soil, and fallen leaves added organic material. As the first plants grew, they created cooler, more sheltered and damper conditions in which additional species could survive.
NASA Earth Observatory summarized Hooker’s objective as forests that would “capture and retain moisture, amplify rains, improve the soil, and ultimately make Green Mountain and the rest of the island more hospitable to plant life.” The phrase “amplify rains” describes increased water capture and retention around the vegetation, not proof that the trees generated additional regional rainfall.

Is Ascension’s cloud forest natural or man-made?
It is best described as an artificial or novel cloud forest. Ascension’s original summit mist habitat was largely treeless and dominated by ferns, mosses and other bryophytes. The forest now occupying much of the mist zone was assembled from introduced plants, including yellow boy, guava, ginger and bamboo.

The present forest is not a surviving ancient rainforest restored to its former condition. It is a new ecosystem produced by human planting in a place where frequent cloud immersion supplied the moisture needed for trees to establish. The Ascension Island Government’s 2023 management plan says Green Mountain is “said to contain the only manmade cloud forest in existence,” while also warning that the introduced forest has been damaging for Ascension’s endemic and native species.

What lives in the mist region today?
The summit forest has become an important refuge despite its introduced origin. The mist region supports 15 of Ascension’s 18 known endemic plant species. Green Mountain remains the stronghold for six of the island’s seven surviving endemic vascular plants.
Ferns, mosses and epiphytes benefit from the permanently damp conditions created by cloud immersion and dense vegetation. At the same time, fast-growing non-native plants can occupy the same space, block light and smother the small habitats on which endemic species depend. Dense ginger thickets and invasive shrubs are especially difficult to control.

Benefits and ecological costs
| Outcome | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Cloud-water interception | Tree canopies capture mist and rain, helping retain water on the summit and supporting freshwater security. |
| Soil formation | Roots stabilize volcanic ground and leaf litter adds organic matter that earlier vegetation lacked. |
| New humid habitat | Endemic ferns, mosses and epiphytes can persist in the damp mist zone. |
| Historic and recreational value | Trails, historic buildings and National Park landscapes now surround the forest. |
| Competition with native plants | Introduced species can out-compete endemic vegetation and simplify the original mist habitat. |
| Ongoing management burden | Conservationists must decide which introduced trees facilitate recovery and which invasives need removal. |
Then and now: two different planting objectives
| Question | 19th-century programme | Current conservation work |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Improve freshwater capture, soils and habitability for the island’s population. | Protect endemic species, reconnect habitat and increase resilience to environmental change. |
| Species policy | Broad importation of useful or potentially useful plants from overseas. | Selective retention of facilitator trees alongside removal of incompatible invasive plants. |
| Ecological result | Rapid greening and development of a novel, moisture-holding forest. | Habitat gains mixed with competition, thickets and loss of some original vegetation. |
| Evidence used | Shipping, specimen and planting records. | Monitoring, connected forest patches, expansion acreage and named management projects. |
What is happening to the cloud forest today?
The forest is not a finished Victorian experiment. Ascension Island Government conservation staff are maintaining connected patches so endemic plants can colonise while clearing non-native growth that threatens them.
Expanding suitable habitat
A previous Darwin-supported project expanded the cloud forest by 3 hectares. The strategy is not to remove every introduced tree. Some established trees act as “facilitators,” providing shade, humidity and structure under which endemic plants can grow. Managers therefore weigh each species’ practical benefit against its risk of spreading or suppressing native vegetation.

Protecting new plantings
Project DPL00097, run by the Ascension Island Government from 1 October 2024 to 31 March 2025, had a value of £9,600. Its focus was protecting new facilitator trees and clearing persistent invasive flora.
Preparing the next extension
A government release dated 5 September 2025 described volunteers clearing old fencing to prepare the Queen Elizabeth II Gardens for new planting in the cloud-forest extension project. The same work included removing invasive guava and lantana near the historic Marine Barracks. These actions show how management now combines planting, weed control and protection of historic sites.
Did planting trees increase rainfall?
The evidence supports increased interception and retention of cloud water on Green Mountain, not a demonstrated increase in island-wide rainfall. The mountain already receives approximately three to four times more precipitation than lower areas because it traps cloud. Trees make that moisture more usable by catching droplets, slowing runoff and helping soil hold water. Claims that the project created rain from nothing overstate what the planting programme accomplished.

Green Mountain illustrates both the power and the risks of ecological engineering. A carefully chosen planting project transformed a sparsely vegetated volcanic summit into a functioning humid landscape within a human lifetime. It improved water capture and created habitat, but it also replaced much of the original treeless mist community with introduced species.
Today’s task is therefore more complicated than either “restore the forest” or “remove all exotics.” Managers must preserve the moisture and shelter that help rare endemic plants while removing guava, lantana, ginger and other growth where they become destructive. Ascension’s cloud forest is valuable precisely because it is both a conservation refuge and a record of how human choices can permanently reshape an island ecosystem.
