Signing, encryption, and receipt behavior depend on the trading partners’ agreement; none is universal. An MDN can confirm handling at the AS2 exchange layer, but it does not mean the business transaction was accepted.
What AS2 carries—and what it does not
AS2 is a way for trading partners to exchange structured business data over HTTP. It is not an EDI document format: the payload may be XML, ANSI X12, EDIFACT, or another structured format. Nor is AS2 one mandatory security recipe. RFC 4130 describes the basic structure as “MIME format inside an HTTP message with a few additional specific AS2 headers.”

The MIME package carries the business content and, depending on the partners’ setup, S/MIME security structures. The HTTP request identifies the AS2 participants and may include headers for security and receipt handling. The partners must agree on the details, including security options, supported algorithms, and how receipts are returned.
What happens when an AS2 message crosses the wire
- The sender prepares the payload. The sender’s AS2 software takes the structured business document and packages it using MIME.
- The sender applies agreed security options. If configured, the sender signs the content, encrypts it for the recipient, or does both. A signature supports integrity checks and sender authentication; encryption provides confidentiality. These are separate features, and an exchange can omit either or both.
- The sender posts the message. The AS2 user agent sends an HTTP POST to the receiver’s AS2 endpoint. The request includes AS2 participant identifiers and can request a receipt.
- The receiver processes the message. The receiver’s AS2 software parses the MIME structure. If the content is encrypted, it decrypts it; if signed, it verifies the signature. These checks concern the received message, not whether the receiver’s business application approves the order, invoice, or other transaction.
- The receiver returns a receipt if requested. The receipt is an MDN. It may travel in the HTTP response to the original POST or arrive later in a separate HTTP POST.
This is the protocol-level path described in RFC 4130. The exact message and receipt exchange depends on the trading partners’ configuration.

How to distinguish the security and receipt choices
When comparing two partners’ AS2 setups, separate confidentiality, integrity, receipt evidence, and timing. A setting in one category does not imply a setting in another.

What an MDN proves—and what it does not
An MDN is the AS2 receipt structure. An HTTP response is the transport-layer response to the POST; it may carry an MDN, but the two are not the same thing. A synchronous MDN is returned on the original connection. An asynchronous MDN arrives separately.

For the strongest receipt evidence described in RFC 4130, the sender requests a signed MDN. The receiver signs the MDN and includes a Message Integrity Check (MIC) for the received message. The sender then verifies the MDN signature and compares that MIC with the digest it recorded for the original message. If this evidence matters for an exchange, retain the original message, its message ID and digest, and the returned receipt records.

Which AS2 configuration should partners agree on?
There is no single configuration that is right for every exchange. Partners should document their requirements and confirm that both implementations support the same behaviors.
- Confidentiality: decide whether the payload must be encrypted.
- Integrity and sender authentication: decide whether the payload must be signed.
- Receipt assurance: agree whether a receipt is needed and whether it must be signed with a MIC that the sender verifies.
- Timing and connectivity: choose a synchronous receipt on the original connection or an asynchronous receipt sent to a separate destination.
- Interoperability: confirm supported algorithms and MIME/MDN behaviors, including any required compatibility with legacy systems.
These are partner-level decisions, not guarantees that follow automatically from using AS2.

Is AS2 still a published standard?
RFC 4130 remains the published AS2 specification. A modernization effort is also underway: the IETF Datatracker lists draft-ietf-ediint-rfc4130bis-03, “AS2 Specification Modernization”, dated September 2026 and expiring 22 March 2027. It is an Internet-Draft, not an adopted replacement standard. The draft discusses updated security and MDN interoperability while preserving compatibility with historic MDN forms. Its description of a secure transmission loop includes compression; that draft language should not be read as a feature required by every deployed AS2 exchange.
