Some soldiers reported connectivity and overheating issues during the U.S. Army’s late-July 2026 Project Convergence Capstone 6 exercise at Fort Irwin, California. The Army has not identified the affected equipment or the cause, so the reports do not establish that a drone overheated. The exercise tested a version of the Army’s broader Next-Generation Command and Control capability, not a single AI product or a fully deployed system.
What problems did soldiers encounter?
Axios reported that some soldiers experienced connectivity and overheating issues while the Army tested NGC2 during Project Convergence Capstone 6, or PC-C6. The exercise took place at Fort Irwin in late July 2026. Axios reported that thousands of troops participated and more than 90 technologies were tried.

The account does not name a device, component, or system that overheated. It gives no overheating count or rate, temperature reading, cause, repair, or quantified effect on missions. It therefore supports a limited conclusion: soldiers encountered reported connectivity and overheating problems during a large technology experiment, but the available reporting does not show how widespread or operationally consequential they were.

Did a drone overheat?
That has not been established. The Axios account describes overheating during a test of NGC2 but does not identify a drone as the source. The Army’s own description presents NGC2 as command-and-control hardware and software; separate Army reporting covers unmanned aircraft testing and sustainment. Those are distinct threads, and the drone-related reporting does not diagnose the PC-C6 issue.

What is the Army’s Next-Generation Command and Control system?
NGC2 is intended to connect data across warfighting functions and make applications and AI available from the Soldier level to Corps headquarters. The Army describes it as a combination of hardware, software, data integration, and communications—not as a synonym for AI or a standalone drone. Its communications options include private 5G, satellite communications, and terrestrial links, intended to offer alternative paths for sharing information.
The goal is to help commanders and units build a shared operational picture and coordinate while moving or distributed. Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Christopher C. LaNeve said, “Next-Generation Command and Control, or what I call Army Command and Control, is not a replacement for how we fight. That’s fundamental, and that’s often misunderstood,” and added, “It does not replace what a commander has always had to do and will always have to do — but it enables them to do it on the move and while distributed, which is incredibly important.”

At PC-C6, 4th Infantry Division commander Maj. Gen. Patrick Ellis highlighted the common visualization of friendly forces and perceived enemy positions as an effective part of the test. He described the prototype overall as “functional but not optimized.” That distinction matters: a capability can demonstrate useful functions in an exercise while still needing refinement before it is mature for broader use.

No. PC-C6 was an experiment, not evidence that NGC2 had completed Army-wide operational deployment. After the exercise, Army leaders said the capability was ready to scale, and the Army said the next phase would begin with I Corps headquarters later in 2026. Those statements describe a planned progression, not completed deployment. The Army’s July 31, 2026 account of the exercise and scale-up also reported that more than 60 companies contributed to the NGC2 ecosystem, with vendors expected to be added or removed as the capability scales.

Separate Army reporting shows why modernization involves more than connecting new software. In coverage of a February 2026 Army Aviation Center summit, the Army reported concerns about airspace management, targeting processes strained by more units identifying targets, and sustainment and repair. Some small unmanned aircraft systems use specialized or proprietary parts; controllers, monitors, goggles, and batteries may not be interchangeable across manufacturers. These are documented challenges in the Army’s broader drone environment, not an explanation for the PC-C6 overheating or connectivity reports.

Another distinct effort illustrates the Army’s iterative approach. In April 2026, the Army Pathway for Innovation and Technology reported 25 flights at Fort Carson using modular drone configurations and multiple payloads, along with tests of communications links and sensors. That field test was separate from PC-C6 and does not establish what equipment experienced problems at Fort Irwin.
