Arma Reforger server administration is configured in config.json. Use the game.passwordAdmin value for shared-password access with #login <password>, or add up to 20 unique IdentityIds and/or Steam IDs to game.admins so those players can log in without entering a password. Remote administration is configured separately in the rcon object, which contains the address, port, password and permission.

The field names changed during development and command lists remain version-sensitive. The procedures below match the documented configuration model available for 2026, while clearly marking details that come from older third-party guides rather than a current official command reference.

There are three practical routes to privileged commands:
- Shared admin password: Set
game.passwordAdminand enter it in-game with#login <password>. - Per-player administrators: Put IdentityIds and/or Steam IDs in
game.admins. Those listed players can use#loginwithout supplying a password. - Owner access: The owner represented by
ownerToken.bin, or an administrator listed in the server configuration, can run commands without a password.
The server reads these settings when it starts. In practice, stop the server before editing the file and restart it afterward so the process loads the new values.

Before editing config.json
- Stop the server cleanly. Editing a live file can be overwritten by the host panel or leave the running process using old values.
- Back up the current file. Keep an untouched copy of
config.jsonso you can restore a known-good configuration after a syntax error. - Preserve the existing structure. Add properties inside the existing
gameandrconobjects rather than creating duplicate objects with the same name. - Use quoted strings. Identity IDs and Steam IDs must be JSON strings. A community forum report describes an administrator entry failing until quotation marks were added.
- Validate JSON before starting. A missing comma, extra comma or unmatched brace can prevent the server from loading its configuration.
The exact file path depends on whether you self-host or use a control panel; use the panel’s configuration editor or the installation directory it identifies as the active server configuration.

Set a shared admin password
This is the simplest method when a small, trusted group shares one credential.

gameobject, add or changepasswordAdmin. Use a password without spaces; punctuation and mixed case make accidental guessing harder. - Save valid JSON, then start or restart the server.
- Join the server as a player, open the chat or command input, and enter
#login your-password. The command is specifically documented as#login <password>. - Test a harmless administrative command, such as
#players, to confirm that authentication succeeded.
Do not leave the old adminPassword property in place as a second setting. The current name is game.passwordAdmin; duplicate or obsolete fields make it unclear which value the server will honor.

Add named administrators with game.admins
Use the array when each administrator should be identified by their account rather than receiving a shared secret. The array can contain IdentityIds, Steam IDs, or a mixture of both, with a limit of 20 unique IDs.

Do not use a player’s display name, clan tag or an unquoted numeric value unless the server documentation explicitly identifies it as the required account ID.
- Stop the server and back up
config.json. - Locate the existing
gameobject. Addadminsas an array if it is absent. - Paste each approved IdentityId or Steam ID as a quoted string. Remove duplicates so the 20-ID limit is not consumed unnecessarily.
- Save and validate the JSON.
- Restart the server. Each listed player can enter
#loginwithout appending a password.
Keeping a non-empty passwordAdmin as an emergency credential is optional operationally, but it creates a shared secret that must be protected. If you use both methods, treat the password as capable of granting the same administrative power as a listed account.

Log in and log out in game
Authenticate
Enter #login <password> with the exact value of game.passwordAdmin. A player present in game.admins, or the owner associated with ownerToken.bin, uses #login without a password. If the command is rejected, reconnect after the restart and verify that the account identifier is in the array as a quoted string.
End the session
Use #logout when you no longer need elevated access, especially on a shared machine. Logging out reduces the chance that someone else can issue a command from the same game session.
Configure RCON
RCON is separate from in-game chat commands. Its connection details live in the top-level rcon object of config.json. A minimal illustrative structure is:

A third-party 1.7-era guide cites port 19999, while the current wiki defines the fields but does not establish that port for every 2026 deployment. Keep the address and port supplied by your host or network administrator, and open the firewall only for the trusted management network.

One older guide describes a different administrator/moderator split. The wiki’s admin/monitor definitions are the safer reference; verify the accepted value against the server build if startup logs reject it.
RCON setup checklist
- Stop the server and back up the configuration.
- Fill in the existing
rconobject’s address, port, password and permission fields. - Use an RCON password of at least three characters with no spaces. Do not reuse the in-game admin password.
- Save valid JSON and restart the server.
- From an RCON client on an allowed network, connect to the configured address and port.
- Test a read-only operation first. Grant
adminonly after the connection and firewall rules are confirmed.
If a client cannot connect, check the server’s listening address, the selected port, host-panel port allocation, local and cloud firewalls, and whether the server actually restarted with the edited file. A successful game connection does not prove that RCON is reachable.

Arma Reforger command reference
The following names come from a third-party guide covering the 1.7 era. They are useful starting points, not a guarantee that every command or argument is unchanged in a 2026 build. Test on an empty or private server before using a command during a live event.

The same guide states that RCON ban-list pages contain 25 entries, while the in-game view contains 10. Treat those page sizes as version-specific behavior rather than a permanent API contract.
Whitelist changes
Whitelist editing is a configuration change, not an in-game command in the documented procedure. The published third-party instructions are:
- Stop the server.
- Open
config.jsonand add the permitted account entry in the whitelist section used by your server version or hosting panel. - Check that the identifier is formatted exactly as the configuration schema expects and that the JSON remains valid.
- Save the file and restart the server.
- Test with an allowed account and then with an account that should be refused.
The available instructions do not establish one universal whitelist property name for every build, so do not invent a new key if your host’s generated configuration already provides a whitelist section. Use the key exposed by that version’s template or panel.
Troubleshoot failed admin logins
“Unknown command” or no privilege
- Confirm the server was restarted after editing.
- Check that the field is
game.passwordAdmin, not the retiredadminPasswordname. - Ensure you used
#loginin the game’s command input, not a normal chat message that the server does not parse. - Verify that the password contains no spaces and matches case exactly.
- If using
game.admins, confirm the account ID is exact, quoted and inside thegameobject.
One listed administrator works and another does not
- Compare the failing entry character by character with the ID shown by the server or host panel.
- Look for missing quotation marks, trailing spaces or a comma omitted between array entries.
- Count unique entries; the documented limit is 20.
- Remove duplicate or stale IDs, restart, and test again.
RCON refuses the connection
- Confirm the client is using the configured address and port, not the game-query or gameplay port.
- Check that the RCON password has at least three characters and no spaces.
- Verify the firewall and host-panel port mapping.
- Check server startup logs for an invalid permission value; the documented values are
adminandmonitor. - Make sure the edited file is the one loaded by the running instance.
Security and operational practices
- Keep
passwordAdminandrcon.passworddifferent. A leak in one channel should not automatically expose the other. - Give RCON
monitorpermission to dashboards or observers that do not need to change state. - Restrict the RCON port at the firewall instead of exposing it to every internet address.
- Remove former staff from
game.adminspromptly and rotate shared passwords after staff changes. - Store a dated backup before every configuration edit and record which IDs were added or removed.
- Test destructive commands such as
#kick,#ban,#restartand#shutdownon a private instance first.
What may change between builds
Field names, command syntax, ban-list paging and the 20-ID administrator cap are all liable to change. The rename from adminPassword to game.passwordAdmin demonstrates why older tutorials can fail even when their general approach is correct. There is no confirmed official 2026 command reference accompanying these settings, so check the command help exposed by your installed build and read startup errors after updates. Revalidate the configuration after patches rather than assuming a 1.7-era guide still describes every argument.
