One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf an Arma 3 server is missing from the browser, first change the Multiplayer browser’s Address setting to LAN on every computer. Arma 3 defaults to the Internet list, so a local listen server can appear to be missing even when it is running. If LAN discovery still fails, remove restrictive filters, confirm the host started a new game, match each player’s branch and mods, and use Remote with the host’s local IP and port. Firewalls, router NAT and Steam query traffic can also prevent discovery. For persistent or cross-network play, a dedicated server is the more reliable option.
What the missing server usually means
An empty Arma 3 server list does not prove that the host failed to create a game. Arma 3 separates browser discovery from the ability to connect. The browser may be displaying Internet servers while the host is running a listen server that is visible only on the local network. A filter can hide a valid result, and Windows Firewall or a router can block the discovery packets even though the game process is open.

There are four distinct situations:
- Same home or office network: the host is running a listen server and other players should use the LAN browser or a Remote connection to the host’s private IP.
- Different networks: the host must be reachable through the router’s NAT, with the configured game and Steam-query ports forwarded to the host.
- Different game builds: a branch or add-on mismatch can prevent a connection after the server is found, or stop it from appearing correctly.
- Persistent hosting: a dedicated server continues independently of a player’s game session and is better suited to recurring groups.
Work through the checks in order. Start with the browser setting and host state before changing router rules; most local discovery problems are resolved earlier in the sequence.

1. Switch the browser from Internet to LAN
The official Arma 3 manual says the Multiplayer browser defaults to Internet. A local server will not necessarily appear in that view. On every player’s PC:
#1 Best Overall
- Player-driven story
- More than 70 weapons
- Over 100 different vehicles
- Massive online battles
- Game world of 225 square km
- Start Arma 3 and open Multiplayer.
- Find the browser’s Address control.
- Change the address from Internet to LAN.
- Refresh the list and wait for the local results to populate.
Make this change on the client as well as the host. A host can see its own session while another PC remains on the Internet view, creating the impression that the server was not published. If the list contains many entries, temporarily remove name, ping, mission, password and player-count filters so a valid LAN result cannot be excluded by an old setting.
Check that the host created a listen server
The host must create an actual multiplayer session, not merely load a scenario in single-player. From Multiplayer, choose New, select the desired scenario and configure the session. Start the game and remain in the hosted session while the other players search. Closing the host’s game closes a listen server; it does not remain available in the background.
If New is unavailable or the session immediately returns to the menu, resolve that local host error first. A client cannot discover a server that never reached the lobby.
2. Remove filters and refresh deliberately
Browser state can hide a working server. Clear restrictive filters, select the correct address again, and refresh after the host is in the lobby. Avoid testing with a remembered favorite or a search term copied from an earlier session.
- Use the LAN address rather than Internet while both machines are on the same router.
- Clear mission, difficulty, mod, password and player-count filters for the first test.
- Refresh after the host has started the session, not before.
- Once the server appears, reapply filters one at a time to identify which setting was excluding it.
A server that appears after clearing one filter is a browser-configuration issue, not a port-forwarding problem.
3. Match the Arma 3 branch, build and add-ons
Discovery and joining are separate tests. Even when a server is visible, a client can fail to connect if the installations do not match. The official FAQ identifies branch and user-generated add-on differences as common causes.

Use the same branch
Every participant should run the same Arma 3 branch, such as Stable or Development. A Development client should not be used to join a Stable host, and vice versa. Check the branch selected in each installation’s game properties before troubleshooting the network.
Use the server’s required mods
Clients must install and enable every required mod or add-on used by the host. A missing or different version can produce a failed join, a stuck loading screen or an immediate return to the server list. For a clean test, have everyone disable optional client-only additions and launch with exactly the host’s required set, in the same versions and load order where the launcher specifies one.
Do not treat a successful ping as proof that the mod set is correct. Ping only shows that a network response was received; it says nothing about mission files, signatures or branch compatibility.
4. Bypass discovery with Remote direct connect
Direct connection is the fastest way to determine whether the browser is the problem. The Arma 3 manual documents a Remote connection option, and the dedicated-server guidance recommends direct connect when browser discovery fails.
- Open Multiplayer and choose Remote.
- Enter the host’s local IPv4 address, such as the address assigned by the home router.
- Enter the port shown by the host’s in-game hosting dialog, then connect.
- If prompted, enter the session password and wait for the lobby.
The host can find the private address in Windows network settings or with the ipconfig command. Use the address on the same local network, not the router’s public Internet address, for a same-LAN test. Private addresses commonly begin with 192.168., 10. or 172.16. through 172.31., but use the value actually assigned to the host.
If Remote succeeds while the LAN list is empty, the game and local network are working; the remaining fault is browser discovery, filtering or query traffic. If Remote fails on the same network, continue with firewall and network-profile checks.

Interpret a direct-connect failure
- Immediate “cannot connect”: verify the IP, port and host state, then check the firewall.
- Connection reaches the lobby but rejects the player: compare branch, build and mods.
- Local direct connect works but an Internet friend cannot join: investigate NAT, port forwarding and the public address.
5. Allow Arma 3 through Windows Firewall
Windows Firewall can permit the game on one network profile and block it on another. On the host, allow arma3.exe and the server executable through the firewall for the profile currently in use. A network marked Public often has stricter inbound rules than one marked Private; choose the profile deliberately rather than disabling the firewall globally.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Firewall & network protection.
- Choose Allow an app through firewall.
- Enable the Arma 3 game and server entries for the appropriate Private or Public profile.
- If no entry exists, add the executable from its installation folder and retry the LAN test.
Security software from another vendor can apply its own network filter even when Windows Firewall shows an allow rule. Check its blocked-events or application-control list and create a rule for the same executables. Do not leave protection disabled as a permanent fix.
Arma 3’s known-issues guidance also notes that some routers and firewalls treat Steam multiplayer queries as spam. That can block the query used to populate the browser while allowing other traffic. An empty list therefore does not always mean the game port itself is closed.

Same-LAN hosting normally avoids Internet port forwarding, but it can still fail when the computers are isolated from one another. Confirm that both devices are connected to the same home network and that the router is not using a guest Wi-Fi network with client isolation. A wired PC and a wireless PC can communicate normally if the router permits local traffic; the connection type alone is not the issue.
When players are on different networks
An Internet player cannot use the host’s private address. The host must provide its public address and forward the configured Arma game port and Steam-query port from the router to the hosting PC. The router’s forwarding target should be the host’s current private IP; assigning that PC a DHCP reservation prevents the rule from breaking after a reboot.
Forward only the ports the installation actually uses. The historical official changelog states that the Steam query port is the game port plus one, but the authoritative values are the ports displayed in the in-game host dialog, the RPT log and the dedicated-server command window. Do not assume a universal hard-coded range when a custom configuration is in use.

The official security guidance recommends opening both the game and Steam-query ports behind NAT or a firewall. It also recommends allowing ICMP echo reply when ping reporting is needed and enabling NAT traversal for the Arma executables. These settings affect reachability and server-list reporting differently:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Game port: carries the actual session traffic.
- Steam-query port: lets the browser query server information; historically it is game port +1.
- ICMP echo reply: allows ping-based reporting when the host’s firewall permits it.
- NAT traversal: helps the executables establish paths through compatible network devices.
Some Internet connections use carrier-grade NAT, which gives the home router no directly reachable public IPv4 address. In that case, ordinary port forwarding may not work. Ask the ISP whether inbound connections are supported, or use a dedicated server on a reachable network.
Double NAT and multiple routers
If an ISP gateway feeds a second personal router, forwarding on only the second device can leave the first NAT layer closed. Put the gateway in bridge mode where appropriate, or forward the selected ports through both routers. Check the path before changing game settings; a double-NAT layout is a network topology problem.
7. Read the configured ports instead of guessing
Arma 3 can use non-default settings. Read the host dialog for a listen server, or inspect the RPT log and dedicated-server command window for a dedicated installation. Record the game port and query port exactly as shown, including any custom value. The historical game-port-plus-one relationship is useful as a cross-check, not a substitute for the installation’s displayed configuration.
When testing from outside the home network, do not rely on a test performed from inside the same router. Some routers lack NAT loopback, so the public address may fail internally even though an external player can connect. Test with a friend on another network or a suitable external connection.
8. Compare hosting choices
Listen hosting is convenient for a quick session, Remote direct connect is a troubleshooting and access method rather than a separate server type, and dedicated hosting is designed for a persistent service.

| Option | Network reach | Setup effort | Persistence | Firewall and NAT exposure | Performance expectation | Mod requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Listen server | Best on the same LAN; Internet play requires the host’s router and firewall to allow inbound traffic | Low: Multiplayer > New | Ends when the host exits the session | Low for same-LAN play; higher when exposed to the Internet | Uses the host’s PC and connection, so the host’s available CPU, memory and bandwidth matter | All players need the host’s branch and required mods |
| Remote direct connect | Uses a known local or public address instead of browser discovery | Low after the host’s address and port are known | Same as the underlying listen or dedicated server | Does not bypass a blocked firewall, NAT or closed port | Same as the underlying host | All players still need the matching branch and required mods |
| Dedicated server | Suitable for cross-network access when its ports are reachable | Higher: install, configure and maintain a server instance | Can remain available independently of a player’s game session | Requires deliberate firewall and NAT configuration | Separates server workload from a player’s client; practical capacity still depends on scenario, hardware and bandwidth | Clients must match the server’s branch and required mods |
Bohemia Interactive’s undated FAQ describes typical scenarios serving roughly 2 to 64 players. That is a scenario-dependent range, not a guarantee: practical limits depend on mission design, server hardware and available bandwidth.
9. When a dedicated server is the better alternative
Choose a dedicated server when the group plays regularly, needs access after the original host leaves, or includes players on separate networks. The dedicated process can run on a separate machine or a reachable hosting environment, leaving each player’s client focused on rendering and input.
For a hosted Arma 3 option, Godlike.Host provides an Arma 3 game server with its own game panel, free DDoS protection, up to three free backups a day, a built-in mod installer and 24/7 support.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Basic dedicated-server checklist
- Install the same Arma 3 branch used by the clients.
- Apply the required scenario files, mods and signatures.
- Set the server’s game and query ports explicitly.
- Read the command window or RPT log to confirm the effective ports.
- Allow the server executable through the operating-system firewall.
- Forward the game and query ports to the server’s fixed private IP when it is behind NAT.
- Test from the server’s local network with Remote, then test from an external network.
- Give players the server address, port, password and exact mod set.
A dedicated server does not eliminate compatibility checks. A client on the wrong branch or missing a required add-on can still fail to join a perfectly reachable server.
10. A complete diagnostic path
Use this order to avoid changing several variables at once:
- Confirm host state: the host used Multiplayer > New and is sitting in the active lobby.
- Select LAN: every local player changed the browser’s Address to LAN.
- Clear filters: remove restrictive searches and refresh after the host starts.
- Match software: verify the same branch, build and required mods on all machines.
- Try Remote: enter the host’s private IP and the port shown in the host dialog.
- Check firewall: allow the game and server executables on the active Windows network profile and in any third-party security suite.
- Check local isolation: make sure both devices are not separated by guest Wi-Fi, client isolation or different routed subnets.
- For Internet players, verify NAT: forward the configured game and query ports, account for double NAT or carrier-grade NAT, and test from outside the host network.
- Escalate to dedicated hosting: use it when persistence, regular access or network topology makes listen hosting unreliable.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Searching Internet for a LAN game: change Address to LAN first.
- Forwarding random port ranges: use the ports shown by the installation; the query port is historically game port +1, but custom settings take precedence.
- Testing only with the browser: Remote direct connect separates discovery failure from actual reachability.
- Disabling every firewall: create scoped allow rules for the Arma executables and restore protection after testing.
- Changing mods while diagnosing networking: first establish a clean, matching mod set, then add optional content.
- Using the public address on the same LAN: test with the host’s private address unless the router supports NAT loopback.
- Assuming a ping proves a playable server: ping, browser query and game-session traffic are separate checks.
Bottom line
For a server that is missing on the same network, set the Multiplayer browser to LAN, clear filters and verify that the host used New to start a listen session. If discovery remains unreliable, connect through Remote using the host’s private IP and configured port. Then verify matching branches and mods, allow both Arma executables through firewalls, and investigate router isolation or NAT. Cross-network players need reachable game and query ports; a dedicated server is the durable choice when the group needs persistence or dependable Internet access.
