Default bindings can differ by preset and game build, and published key lists disagree. Open the in-game Controls menu before your first match, verify the actions you need, and test them in a safe scenario. Then choose a mode based on whether you want a conventional team objective, a persistent cooperative campaign, or the Game Master role in Zeus.

What a new Arma 3 player needs to know first
Arma 3 is a PC military sandbox rather than a game with one universal match format. You can play as a regular soldier, join a team objective, cooperate in a persistent community mission, or control a scenario as Zeus. Each setting can use a different combination of movement, stance, weapon, camera and interaction commands.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is no verified official, single-page keyboard reference that establishes every default key for the current PC build. Community lists conflict with one another, and a preset or previous remap can change what your keyboard does. Use online key charts as hints only. The binding shown in your own Controls menu is the one that matters.
- Confirm before playing: inspect the action and its assigned key in the in-game Controls menu.
- Expect a learning curve: Arma 3 separates actions that many faster shooters combine, including stance, optics, freelook, weapon selection and interaction.
- Pick a mode deliberately: team-versus-team modes, cooperative missions and Zeus give you very different responsibilities.
- Recheck after changing presets: a preset can replace or add bindings, so a key that worked in one profile may not work in another.
How to verify your controls without relying on a key list
Open the Controls menu in your build
- Start Arma 3 and open the in-game Controls menu.
- Review the categories for movement, weapons, view or camera, optics, interaction and any multiplayer or mission-specific actions shown by your installation.
- Click an action to see its current keyboard or mouse assignment. Treat that displayed assignment as authoritative for your profile.
- Write down or screenshot the small set of actions you will use first: move, change stance, look around, aim, fire, reload, change weapon, interact and open the map or inventory if the scenario uses them.
- Enter a low-pressure training or single-player scenario and test each action. Do not assume a key is working because it appears in a third-party chart.
Controls can also be affected by the active preset. A community keybind guide recommends starting from the Apex preset and then making changes, but that recommendation is not a guarantee that the preset matches your installation or preferred play style. If you select a different preset, repeat the verification process.

Why published default keys disagree
Two commonly circulated third-party lists illustrate the problem. One assigns weapon switching to 1, 2 and 3, reload to R, and Reveal/Lock/Lase to T. Another assigns weapon switching to Space and freelook to Left Alt. A community reference chart lists Walk/Run toggle as Left Ctrl + C. These are examples of reported bindings, not an official current key map. They may represent different presets, versions or personal configurations.
Use those examples only to recognize an action while checking your own menu. Never tell a new player that one of them is guaranteed to work.

A practical beginner control layout
Movement and stance
Movement is more than forward, backward and strafing. Arma 3 distinguishes speed and posture, so you should identify the commands for walking or running, changing stance and going prone or crouching in your profile. A slower pace can make observation and aiming easier, while a faster pace helps you reposition; the correct choice depends on the scenario and your team.
Find the Walk/Run toggle rather than trying to infer it from a chart. The community reference that lists Left Ctrl + C is explicitly low-confidence, so verify it in your own menu.
Looking, aiming and freelook
Check separate bindings for ordinary view movement, aiming down sights and freelook. Freelook lets you scan around without changing the direction in which your character is moving or aiming, but its key varies between published lists. If you use a mouse with extra buttons, assigning freelook or another frequently used view action there can reduce hand movement; test for conflicts before keeping the change.
Weapons and ammunition
Identify the actions for selecting a weapon, switching to a different weapon slot, firing, aiming and reloading. The same action may be presented differently by a preset, and some missions can add context-sensitive interactions. Confirm each action in a training scenario before joining a public session.

Weapon switching deserves special attention because the published examples disagree most visibly: one list uses the number row, while another uses Space. Check the displayed assignment instead of memorizing a universal shortcut.
Interaction and information
Locate the command used to interact with objects or characters, plus the controls for your map, inventory and any mission briefing. These actions are often more important in cooperative scenarios than in a short deathmatch. If a mission provides its own instructions, read them before leaving the starting area; mission makers can use actions that are not central to every other mode.
How to remap Arma 3 controls safely
- Choose a starting preset. If you use a community recommendation such as the Apex preset, treat it as a starting point, not a final layout.
- Change only high-value actions first. Begin with movement, stance, freelook, weapon selection, reload, interaction and map or inventory access.
- Check for duplicate assignments. Some actions may retain the old key when you add a new one. Look at both the primary and secondary binding fields and remove an unwanted duplicate where the menu allows.
- Apply or save the changes. Leave and reopen the Controls menu to make sure the assignments persisted.
- Test in a safe scenario. Perform every changed action, including combinations such as movement while looking or changing stance while moving.
- Change one group at a time. If something stops working, you can identify the last edit and restore it instead of rebuilding the entire layout.
A Steam discussion reports that remapping can feel slow because an old binding is not always overwritten immediately. If a new key appears to do nothing, inspect the old assignment, clear the conflicting entry explicitly, save, reopen the menu and test again. Do not assume the game ignored your input until you have checked for a duplicate.
Arma 3 game modes at a glance
Modes differ along three useful axes: your role on the battlefield, whether the scenario is a conventional match or a community-created mission, and whether the objective is competitive or cooperative. A third-party beginner guide lists the following modes as options players can host and join, while noting that the list is not complete.
| Mode | Typical player role | Objective style | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capture the Flag | Soldier on one of two opposing sides | Team objective centered on capturing an opposing flag | Listed among hostable and joinable modes by a beginner guide; the guide does not establish a single official ruleset. |
| Team Deathmatch | Member of a team | Competitive team combat | Listed by the same guide; scoring, respawns and limits can depend on the mission. |
| Standard Deathmatch | Individual combatant | Competitive combat without a team objective | Listed by the same guide; exact rules can vary by server or mission. |
| King of the Hill | Member of a competing side | Contest for control of an area | Listed by the same guide; the server’s mission defines the detailed scoring and timing. |
| Last Man Standing | Individual survivor or member of a survival team | Remain in play while opponents are eliminated | Listed by the same guide; implementation details are mission-dependent. |
| Zeus | Game Master, or a soldier with access to the Zeus interface in Free form | Curate and direct a scenario in real time | Described in Bohemia Interactive’s Field Manual; it has Free and Forced interface forms. |
| Altis Life | Player in a persistent role-play server | Community-defined life or role-play activities | Bohemia’s Bootcamp page identifies it as one of the popular modes currently available and says most such modes are player-created. |
| Antistasi | Member of a cooperative resistance | Persistent cooperative guerrilla warfare against occupying and invading forces | Described in Bohemia’s community news as a persistent cooperative mission. |
The table describes the mode families, not one guaranteed ruleset. A server or mission maker can change maps, equipment, scoring, respawns, objectives and available actions. Read the server’s description and briefing before committing to a long session.
Competitive modes for a first multiplayer session
Capture the Flag
Capture the Flag is the most immediately recognizable option in the list: two sides compete around an opposing flag. It gives a new player a clear team objective, but the mission’s rules still determine how flags are taken, returned and scored. Choose it when you want a defined goal instead of an open-ended patrol.

Team Deathmatch
Team Deathmatch places you on a side in a direct competitive fight. It can be a useful way to practice movement, aiming and communication because your responsibility is primarily tactical rather than economic or narrative. Confirm the server’s respawn and scoring rules before treating a life as disposable.
Standard Deathmatch
Standard Deathmatch removes the team objective and focuses on individual combat. It can teach basic weapon handling quickly, but it offers less protection from friendly-fire mistakes because there may be no friendly side to coordinate with. Use it when you want short engagements and can accept a more self-directed experience.

King of the Hill
King of the Hill is built around control of an area. The name tells you the broad contest, not the exact capture radius, score calculation or time limit; those details belong to the mission running on the server. It suits players who want a visible front line and repeated fights over a shared location.
Last Man Standing
Last Man Standing emphasizes survival and elimination. Because the objective rewards staying alive, rushing into every engagement is not automatically helpful. Check whether the particular mission uses solo survivors, teams, limited lives or another variation before choosing your tactics.
Zeus: playing as a Game Master
Zeus is not simply another team-versus-team map. Bohemia Interactive’s Field Manual describes it as a system in which a Game Master curates scenarios through a three-dimensional, real-time editor. Your job can be to shape the encounter for other players rather than pursue the same objective as a rifleman.
Free Zeus
In the Free form, the Zeus is a soldier on the battlefield who can open the Zeus interface. Because that character exists in the world, the Zeus can be killed. You must divide attention between directing the scenario and staying safe as a participant.

Forced Zeus
In the Forced form, the interface opens automatically and cannot be closed with the usual key. The Zeus is not represented as a character in the world. This makes the role a dedicated directing position rather than a soldier who happens to have editing access.
What beginners should expect
- You are responsible for learning the scenario’s permissions and available objects, not just the infantry controls.
- Other players may rely on your pacing and decisions, so read the mission briefing before spawning or placing assets.
- Free and Forced are different interface arrangements; do not assume that a control or escape behavior from one applies to the other.
A dated Bohemia developer update, SPOTREP #00058, said older Zeus mode names such as ZDM, ZCTF and ZvP had been replaced by a single “Zeus” mode. Because that update is tied to an earlier build, verify the label shown by your current server browser or game version rather than searching only for the older names.

Altis Life
Bohemia’s Bootcamp material lists Altis Life among the popular modes currently available. It also notes that most modes in this part of the Arma ecosystem are created by players. That means the server’s rules, economy, jobs, restrictions and moderation can be specific to that community. Read the server description and any onboarding instructions instead of assuming that every Altis Life server works the same way.
Antistasi
Antistasi is a persistent cooperative guerrilla-warfare mission. Players work together as a resistance against occupying and invading forces, and progress is designed to continue beyond one short round. It is a strong choice if you prefer coordinated planning, logistics and gradual gains over repeated arena-style matches.
Persistence changes how you should approach the session. Ask what the current objective is, how the group communicates and whether the server expects you to continue an existing campaign. Joining without reading the briefing can leave you separated from the operation or unaware of its priorities.
How to choose your first mode
- Want a clear, short competitive objective? Start with Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill or a similar listed server mode.
- Want individual combat? Try Standard Deathmatch or Last Man Standing, after checking the server’s life and respawn rules.
- Want to direct the mission? Choose Zeus only after learning whether the scenario uses Free or Forced form.
- Want a cooperative campaign? Look for Antistasi and read its current objective and persistence rules.
- Want role-play? Altis Life may fit, but expect server-specific rules because these modes are largely player-created.
If you are completely new to Arma 3, a conventional team mode or a guided cooperative session usually lets you learn the core controls without also having to design the scenario. Move to Zeus after you are comfortable finding actions in the Controls menu and reading a mission briefing.

First-session checklist
- Open Controls and confirm movement, stance, freelook, aim, fire, reload, weapon selection and interaction.
- Check whether a preset has changed the bindings you expected.
- Test every changed action in a safe scenario before joining a public server.
- Read the mission or server briefing, including objective, respawn and communication rules.
- For Zeus, identify whether the scenario uses Free or Forced form and learn how its interface behaves.
- For Antistasi or another persistent mission, ask what the current campaign objective is before acting independently.
- When a key fails, return to Controls and look for a duplicate or stale binding before changing unrelated settings.
Common beginner problems and fixes
“The key from a guide does nothing”
Open Controls and check the action in your profile. The guide may describe another preset or an older configuration. Assign the action yourself, save, reopen the menu and test it in a safe scenario.
“The old and new keys both trigger the action”
Inspect the primary and secondary fields for that action. Community reports indicate that an old binding may not be overwritten automatically. Remove the unwanted entry explicitly, apply the change and test again.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“I joined a mode but do not know what to do”
Read the server’s briefing and identify the objective before moving out. The same mode name can cover missions with different scoring, equipment and respawn rules, and community-created modes are especially dependent on their host’s instructions.
“Zeus controls do not behave like infantry controls”
Check whether the scenario uses Free or Forced Zeus. Free Zeus represents the Game Master as a soldier who can be killed; Forced Zeus opens the interface automatically and does not represent the Zeus in the world. The role and interface behavior are therefore different by design.
What is—and is not—standardized
Arma 3’s broad mode families are easy to identify, but their exact implementation is not universal. Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, Standard Deathmatch, King of the Hill and Last Man Standing are listed as hostable and joinable options by a beginner guide, yet that guide also says its list is incomplete. Altis Life and Antistasi demonstrate how much of the ecosystem is shaped by player-created content.
Likewise, there is no safe universal key list to print as “the” Arma 3 controls. The reliable workflow is to inspect your active profile, resolve duplicate bindings, test in-game and then read the mission briefing. That approach remains useful when a patch, preset or server changes the details.
