Start by confirming that you are configuring Evolved rather than ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA), then establish a hardware baseline, edit the correct INI file, change one variable at a time, and measure server health after each restart. Community Engine.ini tweaks can be tested, but their effect on Evolved is not established by authoritative benchmarks.

Confirm that these settings are for ARK: Survival Evolved
ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Survival Ascended are separate products with separate server software. A setting copied from an ASA performance guide may be invalid, ignored, or harmful on an ASE server. Many search results dated 2026 refer specifically to ASA, so check the product name in your host panel, executable, and configuration path before changing anything.

The rest of this guide addresses ASE dedicated servers. It does not establish requirements for ASA, console hosting, or a single-player world.
What actually determines ASE server performance
Server “FPS” is better understood as simulation tick health than as the rendered frame rate on a player’s computer. A server that cannot complete its simulation work on time produces delayed interactions, rubber-banding, late creature AI, and slow structure or inventory updates. Client graphics settings cannot repair an overloaded dedicated server.

1. RAM headroom is usually the first constraint
A 2026 Evolved-server guide describes ASE as lighter than ASA but still identifies memory as the usual bottleneck. If you must choose between additional memory and a modest CPU upgrade, that guidance favors more RAM. Memory must cover the operating system, the server process, the map and save, and every loaded mod. When the machine runs out of physical memory and begins using swap or a page file, latency can become severe even if CPU usage looks moderate.
Leave operating-system headroom rather than sizing RAM to the server’s average footprint. Watch memory during a busy period, after players have explored widely, and immediately after a restart that loads all mods. A low-memory event during startup is especially important: the server may appear to boot while the operating system is already paging.
2. Storage affects loading and save work
Fast NVMe storage is recommended for the server files and save directory. It does not make a CPU-bound simulation faster, but it shortens startup, map loading, mod loading, and save operations and reduces the chance that disk latency compounds a busy tick. Keep the save directory on the same fast volume or a volume with equivalent latency; placing only the executable on an SSD while leaving saves on a slow disk gives an incomplete improvement.

3. An older, more complex world costs more to simulate
Performance commonly declines as a world accumulates tamed creatures, structures, inventories, dropped items, decay state, and other persistent entities. One Steam discussion specifically attributes large tick-rate losses to save complexity, including tamed dinos, structures, spoiling, and decay timers. This is an operational issue, not an INI defect.
Before reaching for obscure engine variables, reduce abandoned tamed dinosaurs and unused structures, clean up excessive dropped items, and review breeding and decay policies. Make a backup before any cleanup that can destroy player property.
4. Mods multiply memory and loading pressure
Mods add assets, scripts, and saved data. A hosting vendor warns that when total mod asset volume exceeds physical memory, the machine starts swapping and performance collapses. Treat the complete mod collection—not just the base game—as part of the server’s memory requirement.

Audit mods after every major change. Remove unused content, avoid duplicate functionality, and test large collections on a copy of the save. Keep a written load order and version record so that a regression can be bisected instead of guessed at.
5. Engine.ini and tick-rate edits are the least certain layer
Community repositories publish Engine.ini examples containing log suppression, network options, and values such as NetServerMaxTickRate=120. The available evidence does not confirm that those values were tested on ASE or that they improve real-world server FPS. An older forum anecdote reports setting the value to 90 while the server still ran near 40 FPS; that is one user’s observation, not a controlled measurement.
Use INI tweaks only after hardware, storage, world complexity, and mods are under control. Back up the file, change one line, restart, and compare the same workload. A higher target tick rate cannot force a CPU-bound server to complete work faster.

Hardware planning for an ASE dedicated server
The figures below are a hosting vendor’s 2026 starting recommendation for roughly 30–50 players with mods. They are not Studio Wildcard requirements, independent benchmarks, or a guarantee for every map and mod set.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Component | Published starting figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | 4.5 GHz or higher | A vendor recommendation for its 30–50-player, modded scenario; clock speed alone does not describe architecture, core performance, or sustained load. |
| Memory | At least 32 GB RAM | Use as a starting point with headroom for the operating system and mods, not as a universal requirement. |
| Storage | NVMe | Place server files and the save directory on fast storage to reduce load and save latency. |
For a smaller, lightly modded server, the same figures may be more than necessary; for a heavily modded or highly populated world, they may be insufficient. Measure memory use, swap activity, CPU saturation, disk latency, and observed tick behavior under your actual peak load before resizing.
Know which configuration file controls what
On a Linux ASE server, the usual configuration directory is ShooterGame/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/. On Windows, the equivalent directory uses WindowsServer. The first successful startup creates the main files.
Best Value
| File | Use it for | Important handling rule |
|---|---|---|
GameUserSettings.ini |
Server options in the [ServerSettings] section. |
Many ordinary server settings belong here. Some guides prefer this file over startup arguments to avoid conflicting values. |
Game.ini |
Deeper gameplay changes, including per-level stats and breeding settings under [/script/shootergame.shootergamemode]. |
Restart the server after edits and validate that the section header and syntax remain intact. |
Engine.ini |
Engine-level and community performance experiments. | ASE-specific effects are not established for many circulated examples. Back up and test one change at a time. |
Stop the server before editing. Copy the entire configuration directory and the save directory to a dated backup. Do not edit while the process is running, because a shutdown or control panel may rewrite files and discard your changes.

- Identify the workload. Note map, player peak, mod count and size, operating system, CPU model, RAM, storage type, and whether the complaint is startup time, lag during play, or save pauses.
- Capture a baseline. Record physical-memory use, swap/page-file activity, CPU load, disk activity, startup duration, and player-observed symptoms during a busy session. Keep the same map and player scenario for later comparisons.
- Back up. Stop the server and copy
ShooterGame/Saved, including the save and configuration files. Label the backup with date and server version. - Fix capacity problems first. Add RAM or move the server and save to NVMe when monitoring shows paging or storage contention. Do not expect an INI change to compensate for missing physical resources.
- Reduce persistent complexity. Remove abandoned tames and structures under an agreed player policy, and review breeding, decay, spoilage, and dropped-item settings. Test cleanup on a copy before applying it to production.
- Audit mods. Remove unused mods, check for duplicate features, and confirm that the complete asset set fits in physical memory without swap.
- Edit the appropriate file. Put ordinary server options in
GameUserSettings.ini, deeper progression and breeding changes inGame.ini, and experimental engine values inEngine.ini. - Change one variable. Keep a changelog containing the old line, new line, date, and reason. Multiple simultaneous edits make it impossible to identify a cause.
- Restart and verify. Confirm the server reaches the expected map, loads every intended mod, and retains the setting after restart. Watch memory, swap, CPU, disk, and in-game symptoms for the same workload.
- Roll back quickly. If startup fails, settings reset, or lag worsens, restore the last known-good file rather than stacking more tweaks.
Testing Engine.ini and NetServerMaxTickRate responsibly
NetServerMaxTickRate is frequently presented in community configurations, with examples of 90 or 120. Those numbers should be treated as test values, not recommended ASE defaults. The available evidence does not verify their effect on server FPS, and the forum report of a value of 90 with server performance near 40 illustrates why a higher ceiling is not proof of a higher achieved rate.
If you test a community Engine.ini:
- Use an ASE-specific example and inspect every section instead of pasting an entire unknown file.
- Keep a pristine copy of the file and note the exact server build.
- Apply a single change, restart, and check that the server still loads the map and mods.
- Compare achieved behavior under identical player and world conditions, not just the configured ceiling.
- Remove the change if it causes crashes, connection problems, log floods, or no measurable benefit.
Log suppression may reduce unnecessary disk writes, but suppressing logs can also hide the evidence needed to diagnose a mod or save problem. Preserve enough logging to troubleshoot before optimizing output.
Save, autosave, and mod-update practices
Shorter autosave intervals are commonly suggested to limit the amount of progress lost in a crash, but the available guidance does not specify a universally correct interval. Autosaves also create disk work. Choose an interval only after observing save duration and disk latency, and keep scheduled external backups separate from the game’s own save behavior.
The -automanagemods launch parameter makes the server check Steam Workshop for mod updates automatically. Automatic updates can reduce maintenance, but an update can also change memory use or saved-data behavior. Keep backups and a maintenance window, and do not assume an unattended mod update is risk-free for a live world.
Diagnose symptoms instead of guessing at settings
| Symptom | Most useful first checks | Likely corrective direction |
|---|---|---|
| Lag increases after adding mods | Physical memory, swap/page-file activity, total mod asset volume, startup logs. | Remove or reduce mods, add RAM, and retest the complete collection. |
| Performance worsens as the season progresses | Number of tamed dinos, structures, dropped items, inventories, spoilage and decay activity. | Perform a backed-up cleanup and adjust world-management policies. |
| Long startup or save pauses | Save size, disk latency, location of the save directory, and concurrent backup jobs. | Move files to NVMe, schedule backups sensibly, and reduce persistent clutter. |
| Server remains slow after a higher tick-rate value | CPU saturation, achieved tick behavior, memory pressure, and whether the setting persisted after restart. | Remove ineffective tweaks and address the actual resource bottleneck. |
| Setting disappears after reboot | Correct file and section, file permissions, control-panel overrides, and whether the server was stopped before editing. | Write the value in the proper INI section, remove conflicting launch arguments, and restart cleanly. |
| Server fails to start after an edit | Last changed line, malformed section header, duplicate entries, and logs. | Restore the backup, then reapply only a validated single change. |
A practical ASE performance baseline
- Use the Evolved server product and its matching configuration directory.
- Provide comfortable RAM headroom; 32 GB is one vendor’s starting figure for a 30–50-player modded scenario, not a universal requirement.
- Use NVMe for server files and saves when possible.
- Keep mod assets below physical memory capacity so the host does not swap.
- Control world age by cleaning abandoned tames, structures, and dropped items under a clear player policy.
- Keep ordinary server options in
GameUserSettings.iniand deeper gameplay edits inGame.ini. - Back up before every configuration or cleanup operation and restart after edits.
- Treat Engine.ini and MaxTickRate examples as experiments; measure achieved behavior and roll back changes that do not help.
This order matters because it attacks the constraints most strongly associated with ASE server health: memory, storage, persistent-world complexity, and mod footprint. Engine-level tuning is a final, reversible experiment—not a substitute for capacity and maintenance.
