For faster ARK: Survival Ascended gameplay, change the expensive client settings first: reduce Resolution Scale, disable Motion Blur, lower Foliage and Fluid Interaction, turn off Virtual Shadows, and switch Lumen global illumination to Screen Space on weaker hardware. Server hosts should use NVMe storage, set a player cap they can actually support, control structure and creature counts, and test a longer autosave interval. Exact server keys and hardware requirements vary by patch and workload, so change one setting at a time and verify the result.

Start by identifying whether the problem is FPS or server simulation
A low frame rate is a client problem: your PC cannot render the scene quickly enough. Rubber-banding, delayed inventories, creatures teleporting, and actions taking seconds to complete are usually server or network symptoms. A large base can produce both at once, but the fixes are different.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Low FPS with responsive controls: adjust graphics, resolution, upscaling, shadows, foliage and volumetric effects.
- Rubber-banding or delayed actions for everyone: the host needs to reduce simulation load, improve storage and review CPU, memory and save behavior.
- Only one player experiences the issue: check that player’s frame rate, network connection and local mods before changing server settings.
Make a baseline before tuning. Record average FPS and the worst dips in the same location, note server population and mod list, and save a copy of the current configuration. Change one variable, restart when required, and repeat the same test. This prevents a visual improvement from being mistaken for a server fix.
Best client settings for more FPS
Use this order because the first changes generally deliver the largest performance gains. The visual cost is subjective, so stop when the game is smooth enough rather than applying every reduction.

| Setting | Starting point | What it changes | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resolution Scale | 70–85% on weak hardware; 90–100% on mid-range systems | Reduces the internal render resolution and therefore the number of pixels drawn. | The image becomes softer, especially at a distance. |
| Motion Blur | Off | Removes a post-processing effect applied during camera movement. | Moving views look less cinematic; gameplay clarity usually improves. |
| Foliage and Fluid Interaction | Lower or off | Reduces the number of plants, particles and interactive effects simulated and rendered around the player. | Vegetation and water effects look less detailed. |
| Virtual Shadows | Off or the lowest practical option | Cuts the cost of high-detail dynamic shadow rendering. | Shadows lose detail or disappear from some objects. |
| Lumen global illumination | Screen Space on weaker GPUs | Replaces the heavier Lumen lighting path with a less expensive screen-space method. | The difference is most visible in caves and at dawn or dusk; it is often subtle in open daylight. |
Resolution and image quality
Resolution Scale is usually the safest large cut. Begin at 85% rather than jumping directly to the lowest value, then lower it in five-point steps if dips remain. A mid-range system can often start between 90% and 100%. Keep the display resolution itself unchanged while testing so you can distinguish internal scaling from a monitor-mode change.
Lumen, shadows and volumetric effects
Lumen global illumination is frequently the single largest graphics drain in scenes with complex lighting. Screen Space lighting gives up some bounce-light accuracy, but the compromise is less obvious outdoors. If clouds or fog are the main cause of a dramatic dip, PC players can test these console commands:
r.VolumetricCloud 0
r.VolumetricFog 0
Try the cloud command under open skies first. If the scene improves without making visibility or atmosphere unacceptable, retain it; otherwise restore the previous value. These commands are PC-only and can be changed by patches, so keep a note of the original state.

Upscaling and frame generation
Use the upscaler available for your GPU, such as DLSS or FSR, before sacrificing every other visual setting. Upscaling renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output, often preserving more apparent detail than simply lowering the display resolution. Frame Generation should be treated differently: enable it only when base FPS is already stable above 60. Generating frames on an unstable baseline can make combat controls feel delayed, and the added input latency is more noticeable during aiming and close fights.
Control mods and isolate heavy content
Every active mod can add assets, scripts or replicated data. Remove unneeded mods from both the server and clients, then test a large content update by itself before combining it with the full stack. If performance collapses only after a particular mod or update, you have a reproducible suspect instead of a vague “server lag” diagnosis. Keep clients and server on matching versions and back up the save before changing load order.
Server storage and capacity planning
Server optimization starts with the save directory, not a graphics slider. Put the server files and save data on an NVMe drive where possible. Faster storage reduces load and save wait times, although it cannot compensate for an overloaded simulation thread or excessive world complexity.

Set the player cap to the real target
Do not advertise a theoretical maximum that the machine cannot sustain. Each additional player adds character replication, inventories, structures, creatures and often more active scripts. Set the cap to the population you can support during the busiest period, then test with that many connected players. A cap that is slightly below the hardware limit is preferable to a full server that produces persistent rubber-banding.
RAM requirements are workload-dependent
Published community and hosting figures disagree, so treat them as planning ranges rather than guarantees. One host guide gives 32 GB as a minimum for a single-map vanilla server, 64 GB for a cluster and 128 GB for a fully modded cluster with more than 30 players. Another recommends at least 64 GB of DDR5 for 50 or more players. A separate host table reports roughly 7.5–12 GB or more of ASA memory use depending on the map. These numbers describe different maps, player counts and mod stacks; 32 GB is a rough upper bound for a small, lightly loaded setup, not a universal requirement.
| Workload description | Figure reported by community hosting guidance | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Single-map vanilla | 32 GB minimum in one guide | Allow headroom for the operating system, backups and bursts; do not assume every map fits comfortably. |
| Cluster | 64 GB in the same guide | Size for the number of simultaneously active maps, not merely the number installed. |
| Fully modded cluster with 30+ players | 128 GB in the same guide | Consider this a conservative planning figure, then confirm with measured peak use. |
| Typical ASA process use | About 7.5–12+ GB in a host table | Map, mods and player activity can push usage higher; monitor peak working set and swap activity. |
CPU guidance is also unsettled. One host emphasizes single-thread performance; another says total core count matters more than clock speed. In practice, watch the server process during peak activity rather than choosing a processor from a single specification. A host guide considers roughly 150–200% CPU usage healthy for vanilla and 200–400% for a heavy mod stack, because the process can use multiple threads and percentages above 100% are normal on that measurement scale.

Autosaves: reduce stutter without risking data
Community guidance commonly describes a 15-minute default autosave interval and suggests testing 30 minutes on large worlds to reduce save-related pauses. A longer interval increases the amount of progress that could be lost after a crash, so take a manual backup before changing it and verify that saves complete successfully.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Find the file the server actually reads
The ARK community wiki documents Windows server configuration under ShooterGameSavedConfigWindowsServer and Linux configuration under ShooterGame/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/; see ark.wiki.gg for the current path documentation. One guide reports that Linux instances may also read the WindowsServer folder. Check the startup output and the file timestamps after a restart instead of assuming the folder.
Expect competing autosave key names
Two names appear in community instructions: AutoSavePeriodMinutes under [ServerSettings] and ServerAutoSavePeriodMinutes. Because the names are not consistent, add only the key your current build recognizes, restart, and confirm behavior by watching the next save. If the interval does not change, remove the unrecognized entry and test the alternate name rather than leaving both in place.
Best Value
Claims that an autosave will crash the server whenever its duration exceeds the interval have not been established. Treat long saves as a reason to monitor and back up, not as proof of a fixed crash rule. Similarly, claims that incremental saves reduce save time by about 40% are unverified and should not be used as a capacity assumption.
Reduce world simulation load
Structures and mega-bases
Large structure counts increase replication and the work required when players enter a dense area. One community guide suggests a value around 10,500 for MaxStructuresInRange, lowering it to about 8,000 on servers with 50 or more players. The setting is not reliable across current builds: the wiki and a Steam discussion use TheMaxStructuresInRange, with a wiki example of 1,000 as a launch option, while another generator site says the plain key is outdated and the range is hard-coded. Change it only in a test copy, confirm the effective value in-game, and be prepared for no effect.
Wild creatures and abandoned tames
Wild creature counts and accumulated abandoned tames add recurring simulation work. Reduce wild-dino pressure before experimenting with niche launch options, and remove or relocate unused tames where the server rules allow it. Make changes gradually: an aggressive population reduction can alter resource availability and the intended balance of a map.
A repeatable tuning and troubleshooting workflow
- Back up saves and configs. Keep a dated copy before changing autosave, structure or creature settings.
- Measure a baseline. Record client FPS in a repeatable location and server CPU, RAM, save duration and player count during a busy period.
- Apply the four client cuts. Lower Resolution Scale, disable Motion Blur, reduce Foliage and Fluid Interaction, and turn off Virtual Shadows.
- Change lighting. Switch Lumen to Screen Space on weak hardware, then test volumetric commands on PC if clouds or fog dominate the frame time.
- Stabilize the baseline before Frame Generation. Use DLSS or FSR as appropriate; test generated frames only after base FPS remains above 60.
- Test server capacity. Reproduce the issue at the intended player cap with the normal mod stack. Watch CPU, memory, disk latency and save pauses.
- Reduce the largest load. Lower the cap, remove unnecessary mods, reduce wild-dino pressure or clean excessive structures before trying obscure keys.
- Validate every config change. Restart, check the server log or observed behavior, and revert immediately if the key is ignored or gameplay changes unexpectedly.
Claims that require extra caution
Settings and console commands can change with patches. The claim that Unreal Engine 5.3 imposes a 30-tick-per-second server cap has not been verified here. The often-repeated “15% faster” benefit for the -UseLargePages launch option is also unverified. Do not design hardware capacity around either figure. A 2023 Steam discussion is useful for seeing player complaints but is not a current settings reference.
Finally, many optimization recommendations come from commercial hosts or hardware sellers. Their practical observations can be useful, but they may favor particular products. Prefer measurements from your own server, keep rollback copies, and re-check behavior after major patches.
