This route reduces the most common early risks—predators, darkness, exposure and lost supplies—without locking you into a permanent base or build. The exact danger level still depends on your map, difficulty, server settings and current game version.

Your first-day plan at a glance
- Spawn on a southern beach or another clearly marked beach zone. These areas are repeatedly described as safer starting locations than the north or swamps.
- Collect basic materials immediately. Make a stone pick and a campfire as soon as their engrams and ingredients are available.
- Stay near the shoreline while scouting. Beaches give you recognizable landmarks and room to retreat if a predator appears.
- Build before the first night. A tiny thatch hut with a door is enough to protect your character and items while you learn the area.
- Use early stat points for survival. Melee damage, food, health, stamina and fortitude are the practical priorities suggested for a new player’s first hours.
- Tame a realistic first companion. A Parasaur is the clearest beginner option in the available guidance; larger choices are discussed below because recommendations are inconsistent.
Do not treat this as a race to build a large compound. Your first objective is a repeatable loop: spawn, gather, return to shelter, cook or craft, and recover your equipment if you die.
Choose a safer spawn on The Island
The Island is the original ARK map and is commonly recommended as a starting point for new players. On that map, southern beaches and other beach zones are the most consistent beginner recommendation. Scalacube specifically points new players toward southern beaches because they tend to offer fewer predators and useful early resources. Game Rant likewise describes beach areas as the safest spawn zones in Ascended.

Why the beach is useful
- Visibility: open sand makes approaching threats easier to notice than dense forest or swamp terrain.
- Navigation: the waterline is a simple landmark when you do not yet know the map.
- Room to retreat: you can run along the shore instead of being trapped between trees, cliffs or thick vegetation.
- Early materials: basic gathering is practical around the edges of a beach.
Spawns to avoid on a first attempt
Northern and swamp regions are described as harder starting areas. They can place a new character close to more dangerous creatures or terrain that is difficult to escape. If the spawn screen offers several regions, choose a southern or beach option rather than experimenting with a hazardous zone. If you land somewhere dangerous, move toward open shoreline instead of trying to fight your way through unfamiliar terrain.
Gather and craft the tools that keep you alive
Your first few minutes should be about securing tools, light and a place to store items. Parrystack’s beginner guidance identifies a stone pick and campfire as early crafts. Gather only what you need for those items first; carrying a large collection of random resources makes an early death more expensive.

First gathering priorities
- Stone: collect loose stones from the ground rather than wandering inland for a long time.
- Wood and thatch: gather enough for the first tools and a minimal shelter.
- Fiber: pick nearby vegetation for primitive crafting requirements.
- Food resources: keep a small amount of edible food on hand, but do not overfill your inventory before you have a safe box or hut.
Craft the stone pick first
The pick lets you gather materials more efficiently than bare hands and is the foundation for the rest of the opening sequence. Learn the engram when it becomes available, craft one immediately, and keep it in your hotbar. A tool you can reach without opening the inventory is useful when you need to collect a resource while moving away from danger.

Place a campfire as soon as practical
A campfire gives you a controllable place to process food and a visible landmark near your first shelter. Put it close enough to your hut to monitor, but not so close that you block the door or make the tiny interior difficult to use. Carry a modest reserve of fuel and raw food rather than every item you own.
Build a first-night shelter before darkness
A small thatch hut with a door is the normal first shelter. It does not need to be attractive or permanent. Its job is to create a secure point where you can place a bed or storage as those options become available, leave excess materials, and wait out dangerous conditions.
A practical starter layout
- Use a flat patch near the beach, but not directly on a narrow path you need for travel.
- Make the footprint just large enough for a door, a few storage or crafting items, and room to move.
- Place the entrance where you can see the shoreline or the approach from nearby trees.
- Keep the campfire outside or beside the hut if interior space is tight.
- Store spare tools and materials so one death does not erase all progress.
Do not spend the whole first day searching for an ideal permanent location. A temporary hut gives you a safe return point while you learn which nearby creatures, resources and terrain are manageable.

If night arrives before the hut is finished
- Stop gathering and move into open, familiar terrain.
- Drop or hide nonessential items if your inventory makes you slow.
- Use the shoreline and your campfire as reference points.
- Finish a minimal enclosed structure first; decoration and expansion can wait.
- Once inside, sort supplies and plan the next daylight trip rather than making a blind night expedition.
Spend early stat points for reliability, not a specialized build
GameSpot’s new-player advice emphasizes melee damage, food, health, stamina and fortitude during the first several hours. These choices address the problems that kill new survivors most often: being unable to gather quickly, running out of stamina while escaping, taking too much damage, becoming hungry, or struggling with environmental conditions.
What each priority does for a beginner

Choose a first tame without chasing the biggest creature
Early guidance consistently names the Parasaur as a popular first tame, using a slingshot and Mejoberries. That combination makes it a sensible learning project because the required items are understandable and obtainable early. You can practice approaching, feeding and protecting a tame without committing to an expedition for a rare or dangerous animal.

Parasaur: the straightforward learning option
- Preparation: have a slingshot and a supply of Mejoberries ready.
- Location: look for one near your safer beach area rather than travelling into an unknown region.
- Safety: clear immediate threats first and keep the animal away from the waterline if predators are nearby.
- Purpose: use the tame to learn the basic taming workflow and to support early resource trips.
The exact time and resource cost can change with server settings, so do not assume a single universal taming duration.
Argentavis and Giganotosaurus: why the advice conflicts
One beginner guide describes a Giganotosaurus as a first build while also rating Argentavis as excellent for beginners. Those recommendations conflict with each other and should not be treated as a consensus that either creature is appropriate for a brand-new survivor. Neither option should replace the safer plan of securing a hut, tools and a dependable food loop first.

After surviving the first night, aim for incremental improvements rather than a dramatic expansion. A practical week-one target described in beginner guidance is upgrading from thatch to wood, adding storage and starting a crop plot.
Upgrade in this order
- Replace the most exposed thatch pieces with wood. Start with walls, doorways and any part that leaves your sleeping or storage area vulnerable.
- Add storage. Separate tools, building materials, food and taming supplies so a death does not cost everything at once.
- Establish a crop plot. Begin a small, manageable food-growing project instead of building a large farm immediately.
- Improve your travel kit. Keep spare tools, food and a few defensive options in the hut.
- Use bolas as early utility equipment. Beginner guidance highlights them as useful for controlling situations involving smaller creatures and for making early tasks safer.
Keep the first base close enough to the original beach that you can find it again. A modest, organized base is more valuable than a large structure you cannot defend or resupply.

Manage deaths, lost gear and risky expeditions
Before leaving the hut
- Eat and carry a limited reserve of food.
- Take only the tools and materials required for the trip.
- Confirm that you can identify the route home using the beach, campfire or another visible landmark.
- Leave replacement tools in storage.
After a death
- Respawn at the safest available point rather than selecting an unfamiliar region.
- Re-equip from your stored backup kit.
- Return along a route you already understand instead of improvising through the north or swamp.
- Recover the body only when the surrounding area is clear enough to make the attempt worthwhile.
Dying is part of learning ARK. The real failure is allowing one death to remove every tool, food item and building material you own.
Keep version and map information current
ARK: Survival Ascended is the remastered version of ARK: Survival Evolved and released for PC on October 25, 2023. The maximum level is listed as 245 as of October 2026, but level caps and other progression details are volatile. Check the current live information before planning a long-term character build.
The ARK Official Community Wiki is fan-run despite its name. Use it as a reference, but verify changing values against current game information and your server’s settings. Official patch notes, server rules and balance changes can alter practical advice after a guide is written.
