Taming one is a major project: you must secure it, knock it out without losing control of the encounter, keep its torpor stable, and supply food for a server-dependent period. Once tamed, its value comes from exceptional combat damage, but practical performance depends on level, taming effectiveness, imprinting, breeding, rage management, positioning and your server rules.

What the Giganotosaurus is good at
The ARK Official Community Wiki describes the Giganotosaurus (pronounced jai-GA-nuh-tuh-saw-ruhs), meaning “Giant Southern lizard,” as a large, carnivorous dinosaur and one of the most powerful creatures in the games. That description is most useful when read as a role, not as a promise of one universal damage number. A Giga is built for high-damage combat and apex-predator tasks, while its real results vary with the individual creature and the rules of the server.
- Primary role: overwhelming melee combat against dangerous creatures and high-health targets.
- Best long-term value: a strong breeding line whose health and melee inherit well across generations.
- Main risks: the tame itself is difficult, and a poorly positioned or badly managed Giga can become a liability during a fight.
- Important variables: wild level, stat distribution, taming effectiveness, imprinting, mutations or other breeding outcomes, saddle quality, rage behavior and server configuration.
Because maps, game versions and unofficial settings can change creature and taming behavior, treat every numerical value below as a planning reference rather than a guarantee for every cluster.

Plan the tame before you approach
A Giga tame should be treated as an operation with a fallback plan, not as an improvised knockout. Scout the area, decide where the creature will be controlled, and move valuable equipment and mounts out of the danger zone before you begin.
Choose a controlled location
Use a secure trap or another controlled knockout setup appropriate to your map and game version. The design must prevent the Giga from reaching you while still giving you a safe place to work around its unconscious body. Confirm that the location is clear of wild predators, environmental hazards and player traffic. A trap that works on one map or patch may not be practical on another, so verify its dimensions and construction method in the version you actually play.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPrepare supplies and a reserve
Bring the food, narcotics or equivalent torpor-management supplies, ammunition or knockout equipment allowed by your server, building materials for repairs, and a way to monitor the tame from cover. Carry more than the calculated minimum when the server’s rates are unfamiliar. Keep a reserve cache away from the trap so one death or inventory loss does not end the attempt.
Check the server rules
Rates for taming speed, food drain, spoilage, harvesting, breeding and stat gain can differ substantially between official, unofficial and single-player settings. A calculator configured for the exact map, difficulty and rates is safer than copying a quantity from a different server. The ARK Official Community Wiki confirms that taming a wild Giganotosaurus requires substantial food and narcotic management, but it does not establish one universal food count or schedule.
How to tame a Giganotosaurus
- Scout and secure the site. Clear nearby threats, build or verify the trap, and place your supplies where they can be reached without exposing the survivor or support mounts.
- Lure the Giga into control. Use a method suitable for your map and version. Do not begin the knockout until the creature is contained and you have a safe route out if the setup fails.
- Apply the knockout method patiently. Keep distance, maintain line-of-sight only when necessary, and watch for structural damage to the trap. If the enclosure is compromised, disengage and repair it rather than continuing in an unsafe position.
- Confirm unconsciousness. Once the Giga is down, verify that it is not taking preventable environmental or creature damage. Move hostile wildlife away and establish a protected perimeter.
- Load the correct food. Put the food selected for your server’s settings into the creature’s inventory. The amount and ordering depend on rates and food values, so use a calculator for your configuration instead of treating an online number as universal.
- Maintain torpor. Monitor the torpor bar and administer narcotics or the equivalent item before the creature wakes. Keep an emergency supply ready; a long or interrupted tame can consume more than an ideal-rate estimate.
- Protect the inventory and perimeter. Do not leave the unconscious Giga unattended in an exposed area. Check for wild creatures, players, weather or terrain issues that could damage it or prevent feeding.
- Let the tame finish. Avoid unnecessary interaction that could consume food or alter the taming process. When the bar completes, claim the creature, move it to a secure base and immediately check its level and inherited statistics.
The critical distinction is between knocking the animal out and completing the tame. A successful knockout only starts the process; torpor, food access and protection must be managed until the final percentage is reached. If the creature wakes, dies or loses too much taming effectiveness, stop and reassess the site and rates rather than trying to salvage an unsafe attempt.

Wild baseline stats and what they mean
The cited wild baseline for a Giganotosaurus is 35,000 health, 400 stamina and 10,000 torpidity. Those are starting values for the wild creature’s stat table, not a promise that every tamed Giga will display those numbers. Wild level increases and taming-effectiveness bonuses alter the final creature, and the post-tame level distribution determines whether it is useful for a particular job.

| Stat or factor | Why it matters | How to evaluate it |
|---|---|---|
| Health | Determines how much punishment the Giga can absorb before a retreat is required. | Compare health points or levels among candidates from the same server and generation, then test survivability in the situations you actually face. |
| Melee damage | Controls how quickly the creature ends fights and how much pressure it can apply to high-health targets. | Prioritize a strong melee distribution for a combat line; compare like-for-like levels and account for taming and imprinting bonuses. |
| Stamina | Affects how long the mount can remain active when movement or attacks consume stamina. | Check whether the candidate can perform your planned route or fight without frequent pauses; do not evaluate stamina in isolation from health and melee. |
| Weight | Sets how much equipment or loot the creature can carry between fights. | Useful for transport and hauling, but generally secondary to health and melee for an apex-combat role. |
| Wild level | Provides the pool of points that can be distributed across attributes. | Use it as a screening signal, not as a verdict. Two creatures at similar levels can have very different combat distributions. |
| Taming effectiveness | Changes the post-tame level and resulting attributes. | Record effectiveness at the end of the tame and compare candidates with that qualification attached. |
| Imprinting and breeding | Can improve the practical performance of a raised mount and determine the ceiling of a line. | Judge the final imprinted breeder or combat offspring, not only the original wild capture. |
There is no universal “good stat” threshold
A single health or melee number cannot define a good Giga across every difficulty, breeding line and server configuration. A candidate that is excellent on one cluster may be ordinary on another because level distributions, tame rates and breeding rules differ. Record the wild level, the final tamed level, taming effectiveness and each relevant stat, then compare candidates captured under equivalent conditions.
Use a three-way comparison
- Durability: Can the creature survive the strongest encounter you expect to run without relying on perfect positioning?
- Damage: Does its melee distribution provide the clear time-to-kill advantage you need?
- Breeding potential: Are the best health and melee values cleanly available for inheritance, and can you preserve them in a line?
Stamina and weight matter when they affect a specific route or job, but they should not distract from the health-melee-breeding decision for a dedicated combat Giga.
Breeding and imprinting for a combat line
A wild tame is the beginning of a Giga program, not necessarily the finished mount. Keep records for every candidate so you know which parent supplied each useful stat. Separate high-health and high-melee animals until you can combine those values deliberately, and avoid assuming that a higher displayed level automatically means a better breeder.
Build around the job
For a boss or apex-combat line, select for survivability and melee first. A line intended for hauling or general exploration can accept a different balance, but it should not be judged by the same standard as a combat specialist. Imprinting can change the performance of the raised mount, so record whether a comparison is between fully imprinted, partially imprinted or un-imprinted animals.

Keep comparison records
- Wild level and capture location.
- Final tamed level and taming effectiveness.
- Health, melee, stamina and weight values before breeding.
- Parentage and which stat each parent contributed.
- Imprinting status and any server-specific breeding multipliers.
This record prevents a common mistake: discarding a lower-level-looking animal that carries the exact health or melee value needed for the next generation.
The Giganotosaurus Saddle
Riding a tamed Giga requires the Giganotosaurus Saddle. The engram unlocks at level 96, costs 75 engram points, and provides 25 armor. Its listed crafting cost is 680 hide, 350 fiber and 120 metal ingots or scrap metal ingots.
| Saddle detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Engram unlock level | 96 |
| Engram point cost | 75 |
| Armor | 25 |
| Hide | 680 |
| Fiber | 350 |
| Metal ingots or scrap metal ingots | 120 |
These are the cited engram and recipe values; server mods or configuration changes can alter availability or cost. Plan the saddle before the tame so the newly claimed creature can be moved and tested safely rather than left exposed while materials are gathered.
What to use a tamed Giga for
High-damage combat
Combat is the core use. A well-built Giga can handle encounters that would overwhelm ordinary mounts and can serve as an apex predator for clearing dangerous areas. Its value is measured by the combination of damage, health, rider control and the ability to disengage before a bad fight becomes unrecoverable.

Base defense and area control
A Giga can deter attacks and remove large threats near a base, but it should not be left in a position where pathing, rage or an unexpected player action can turn its power against your own structures or tames. Use a controlled staging area and a clear route for deployment.

Resource and trophy runs
When the route contains dangerous creatures, a Giga’s damage and durability can make collection safer and faster than using smaller mounts. Weight and stamina still determine whether it is practical for a particular haul, so evaluate those stats against the trip rather than assuming every Giga is an ideal carrier.
Breeding-line development
Strong individuals are valuable even when they are not your immediate riding mount. Preserve exceptional health or melee values, combine them methodically and raise offspring under known imprinting conditions. This is often the most durable use of a good capture because it improves future mounts instead of only solving one encounter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Combat discipline: rage, positioning and server rules
Exceptional power does not remove the need for control. Rage behavior, positioning and server settings can change the outcome of a fight. Avoid crowded terrain where the Giga can be pinned, keep a retreat route open, and do not enter an encounter without knowing which nearby creatures or structures could become accidental targets.
- Positioning: Face the intended target, keep enough room to turn, and avoid ledges or tight passages that prevent retreat.
- Rage management: Treat rage as a fight-ending risk. If your version or settings allow rage to threaten the rider or allied creatures, reduce exposure and disengage before the meter reaches a dangerous state.
- Support: Use scouting mounts or a second survivor to identify threats before committing the Giga.
- Server configuration: Damage, resistance, breeding, tame rates and creature behavior can differ, so a strategy proven on another server may not transfer directly.
The available evidence supports the Giga’s exceptional power but does not establish a universal damage benchmark. Test your own creature in a controlled area and record the result with the server settings attached.
How to compare a Giga with another combat tame
There is no universal ranking across all ARK versions. Instead, compare the animals against the job and rules that matter to you.
Best Value
| Comparison axis | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Durability | Which mount survives the expected encounter with a margin for mistakes? |
| Melee output | Which one ends the fight faster at comparable levels and breeding quality? |
| Mobility | Can it reach the target, turn and retreat on the map’s terrain? |
| Taming risk and cost | How difficult is the initial tame, and what supplies are lost if it fails? |
| Saddle access | Can you unlock and craft the required saddle when the creature becomes available? |
| Breeding ceiling | Can you preserve and combine the health and melee values you need? |
| Map and server rules | Do local rates, creature spawns and restrictions change the practical result? |
This framework keeps a comparison honest: a mount that is faster or cheaper to tame may still be the wrong choice for a high-health target, while a more powerful mount may be excessive for routine travel.
Troubleshooting a failed or unsafe tame
The Giga wakes before the tame finishes
Check whether torpor was allowed to fall too far, whether the food estimate matched the server’s rates, and whether the creature was taking damage that reset or disrupted the plan. Rebuild the reserve supply and use a calculator configured to the current settings before attempting another knockout.
The trap does not hold
Do not continue firing or feeding while the creature can reach you. Escape, repair or replace the structure, and confirm that the design is appropriate for the map and version. A controlled retreat costs fewer resources than a lost survivor, mount and inventory.
The tamed Giga feels weaker than expected
Review its final tamed level, taming effectiveness, health and melee distribution rather than judging it by appearance or wild level alone. Check imprinting status, saddle armor and the server’s damage and resistance settings before deciding that the tame failed.
The mount becomes dangerous in a fight
Move away from allied structures and creatures, create space, and stop escalating the encounter. Rage, poor positioning or an unexpected target can turn high damage into collateral loss. Use a safer test area to learn the creature’s behavior before taking it into a crowded base or boss route.
Practical checklist
- Confirm the map, game version and server rates.
- Scout a trap location and clear nearby threats.
- Prepare food, torpor supplies, knockout equipment and a reserve cache.
- Plan a protected observation position and an escape route.
- Record wild level and post-tame stats, including taming effectiveness.
- Craft or reserve the saddle before exposing the new tame to combat.
- Test health, melee, stamina and weight against the job you actually intend to perform.
- Keep breeding records so exceptional stats are not lost between generations.
Bottom line
Tame a Giganotosaurus when you need an apex combat mount and are prepared to manage a high-risk knockout and a long, server-dependent feeding process. Judge the finished animal by comparable health and melee values, taming effectiveness, imprinting and breeding potential—not by a single “good stat” number. Unlock the level-96 saddle in advance, control rage and positioning in every fight, and adapt all quantities and expectations to your map and server settings.
