I can’t honestly call a particular pack, quilt, filter, or shirt “what I’m taking” without an actual trip inventory. What I can offer is a route-specific packing framework: what to plan for, which choices depend on your itinerary, and what to verify before setting out.
The Arizona Trail crosses desert, Sky Islands, and high plateaus. Treeline Review’s February 5, 2026 guide describes an 800-mile (1,287-kilometer) route, with 109,500 feet (33,300 meters) of elevation gain and loss, a high point of 9,600 feet and a low point of 1,700 feet, and a typical thru-hike estimate of four to six weeks. Those are guide figures, not independently verified official measurements. They help explain why a single-weather, single-water-carry packing list is a poor fit.

Start with the route and your itinerary
Build the kit around the passages you will hike, the dates, and the distance between reliable resupply and water—not around a generic gear list. The Arizona Trail Association organizes its trail resources into 43 passages and provides maps, water-source information and conditions, closure notices, and gateway-community information. Treat those resources as live planning references, not guarantees that a source will be flowing or a route will remain open.

Treeline Review’s February 2026 guide describes temperatures ranging from lows in the 30s to highs in the 100s. These are source-reported conditions, not a forecast for your dates or a promise about any particular passage. Elevation and exposure change what you need from your clothing and sleep system, so check expected conditions for the specific sections and season.

Build the core kit around the biggest variables
Water containers and treatment
Carry containers sized for the longest water carry in your actual itinerary, with room to adapt when conditions or plans change. There is no universally adequate capacity for the whole trail: source spacing, whether a source is available, weather, pace, and your own needs all matter.
A filter is one treatment option. Treeline Review’s 2026 list names the Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter System as an example, not a requirement. Whichever treatment system you choose, confirm that it suits the sources and conditions on your route, and check the Arizona Trail Association’s current water-source information before each passage. Treatment makes collected water safer to drink; it does not make a dry, inaccessible, or otherwise unsuitable source usable.
Sun protection
Plan for sustained exposure with sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, and clothing that protects your skin. The Arizona Trail Association-hosted J. Taylor Bell gear article and Treeline Review’s 2026 guide both emphasize sun protection; the former specifically recommends UV-resistant long sleeves. A UPF sun hoodie is one clothing style named in Treeline Review’s list, not a required item. Choose clothing you will wear comfortably while hiking and that works with your layering system.

Layers and sleep system
Use layers that let you adjust to large temperature swings rather than packing only for the daytime high. Bell’s 2022 gear article recommends a three-season layer system. For sleeping, choose a system appropriate to the expected overnight conditions and your own comfort; the 2026 Treeline Review list names a Katabatic Gear Palisade 30F Quilt as an example, not a universal recommendation. A temperature rating or product name by itself cannot determine whether a sleep system suits your route, shelter, or personal needs.
Backpack and load
Fit and the heaviest expected load matter more than picking a pack because it appears on a trail list. Account for your food and the maximum water carry your itinerary requires, then check that the pack carries that load comfortably and works with your shelter and other gear. Treeline Review names the Zpacks Arc Haul 50L Backpack as one example; its appearance in a gear guide does not establish that it will fit every hiker or carry every person’s load well.
Shelter, cooking, and electronics
These are system choices, not items with one right answer for every Arizona Trail itinerary. Bell’s 2022 article discusses flexible choices for shelter, cooking, and electronics, but its recommendations reflect advice published on September 14, 2022—not a new test or a guarantee of current product availability. Decide what you need based on your trip plan, conditions, and how the rest of your kit works together.

Navigation, repair, and personal essentials
Include the navigation materials and personal essentials you need for your route, plus a practical way to handle common gear problems. Use current passage maps and closure information while planning, and make sure you can consult the information you need on trail. Bell’s article also suggests considering used gear before buying new; inspect any used item carefully for fit, function, and condition.
Check closures and reroutes before you go
Trail status is time-sensitive. The Arizona Trail Association’s closure listing, accessed October 7, 2026, included an October 5 notice closing 6.2 miles north and south of Orderville Trailhead on Passages 41 and 42 for prescribed burning, with a dirt-road detour until the area is declared safe. That dated notice may change; check the Association’s current closure listing and relevant land-manager updates immediately before departure.
The Association’s August 31, 2026 autumn update reported that flash flooding had closed 16 miles of Grand Canyon trail, including Passage 38 from The Tipoff to North Kaibab Trailhead. At the time of that update, Silver and Black Bridges, Bright Angel Campground, and Phantom Ranch were listed as closed, and normal in-park water sources were described as likely off. Those details are a dated snapshot, not confirmation of current conditions. Verify current access, water, and any alternatives with the Association and the relevant land managers before planning around that section.
In that August 31 update, Arizona Trail Association author Matthew Nelson wrote: “Please avoid closed areas, understand the hazards of traveling through burned forests that have reopened, and enjoy every mile you’re able to hike or ride this year.” A reroute or closure is a reason to change the plan, not to enter a closed area.

Permits are location-specific; there is no single permit that covers the full Arizona Trail. Recreation.gov’s Arizona Trail Thru Hiker Overnight Permit for Saguaro National Park applies to overnight stays at shared sites at Grass Shack or Manning Campground during the selected date range. Each hiker needs an individual permit. It does not reserve a private site, authorize camping outside those designated sites, or include the separate park entrance fee.
Check the Recreation.gov permit page and the other agencies administering the sections on your itinerary for current requirements. Do this for the actual dates and places you intend to camp rather than assuming that a thru-hiker permit covers every overnight stop.

Use product lists as starting points, not prescriptions
Treeline Review’s February 5, 2026 gear guide names products such as the Sawyer Squeeze, Zpacks Arc Haul 50L, and Katabatic Gear Palisade 30F Quilt. These are examples to evaluate, not proof that those products suit your body, load, itinerary, or preferences. The guide also discloses that it may contain affiliate links. Bell’s Arizona Trail Association-hosted article was published September 14, 2022, so treat its gear recommendations as advice from that date rather than current hands-on testing.
When comparing alternatives, evaluate the features that affect your trip: fit and comfort, capacity for your planned food and water carry, weight, sun and weather protection, durability, repairability, price, and compatibility with the rest of your kit. A lighter item is not automatically a better choice if it does not fit, carry the load, or work for the conditions you expect.
