To add Argos visual review to an existing Cypress suite, install @argos-ci/cypress, register registerArgosTask in Cypress’s setupNodeEvents, and call cy.argosScreenshot() after asserting the page is in the state you want to compare. In CI, wait for your application server to be ready before running Cypress, and keep rendering conditions and changing content under control. The documented setup is the same for Indian teams; the official guides reviewed do not establish India-specific prices, payment terms, or data-location options.
What the Argos-Cypress integration does
Argos captures screenshots during Cypress runs and provides a workflow for reviewing visual changes alongside CI and pull requests. It supplements your existing functional tests: Cypress drives the application and verifies its state; Argos records selected screens so visual changes can be reviewed.

The setup below follows Argos’s Cypress integration documentation. Preserve your existing Cypress configuration and plugin setup while adding the Argos task.

Install the package
Add the SDK as a development dependency using your project’s package manager. For npm:
#1 Best Overall
npm install --save-dev @argos-ci/cypress
Register it in Cypress configuration
In the appropriate Cypress configuration file, add registerArgosTask(on, config, options) inside setupNodeEvents. Cypress supports this event setup under either end-to-end or component testing. Keep any existing event handlers and plugin registrations; merge the Argos registration into them rather than replacing them.
const { defineConfig } = require('cypress');
const { registerArgosTask } = require('@argos-ci/cypress');
module.exports = defineConfig({
e2e: {
setupNodeEvents(on, config) {
registerArgosTask(on, config, {
uploadToArgos: !!process.env.CI,
});
// Keep your existing setupNodeEvents registrations here.
return config;
},
},
});
The uploadToArgos setting gates uploads on the presence of the CI environment variable. If you need another policy—for example, uploading locally while debugging—adjust the condition to match your workflow. Make sure your CI environment also provides the credentials required by your Argos project; consult the current Argos setup instructions for the applicable project configuration.
TypeScript import issue
Argos documents a possible TypeScript ts(1479) import error. Its comprehensive approach is to set moduleResolution to "Bundler" in tsconfig.json. A targeted @ts-expect-error moduleResolution comment is documented as a workaround. Prefer the configuration approach when it fits your project; use the comment only when you intentionally need a narrow exception, since it suppresses the specific compiler complaint rather than changing module resolution.
Capture named screenshots in Cypress tests
Use cy.argosScreenshot([name][, options]) after the test has reached and asserted the state you want to review. Give screenshots stable, descriptive names based on the page or UI state, such as "checkout-empty-cart" or "account-settings".

cy.get('h1').should('contain.text', 'Profile');
cy.get('[data-testid="profile-form"]').should('be.visible');
cy.argosScreenshot('account-settings-profile');
});
});
Argos screenshot options include selecting an element, specifying viewports, injecting CSS, setting a comparison threshold, and controlling stabilization. Check the current API reference for exact option names and accepted values, which can change over time.
Stabilize the capture without hiding real changes
Argos enables stabilization by default. Its documented controls can wait for fonts and images, wait for aria-busy to be removed, and hide carets or scrollbars. These controls help reduce noise, but they do not establish that the application is showing the correct state. Keep meaningful Cypress assertions before the capture.
For data that changes on every run—such as a date or clock—Argos documents data-visual-test helper values including transparent, removed, and blackout. Apply masking narrowly: retain the surrounding layout and behavior that matter, while excluding only the volatile content that would otherwise create irrelevant differences.
Headless-browser viewport differences can also affect output. Argos documents setting window size and device scale factor through Cypress’s before:browser:launch event. Keep those settings consistent with the baseline conditions your team intends to review.

Run Cypress reliably in CI
Wait for the application server
Cypress needs the application server to be responding before tests begin. Starting a server in the background and immediately launching Cypress creates a race: the first test may visit the app before it is ready. Use an explicit readiness check.
Cypress documents start-server-and-test and wait-on as ways to coordinate server startup and test execution. Its CI overview explains the general pattern.
npx start-server-and-test "npm run start" http://localhost:3000 "npx cypress run"
Replace the server command and URL with your application’s actual start command and health-checkable address. The readiness URL should respond only when the app is ready for the tests you intend to run.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGitHub Actions
Cypress documents its maintained cypress-io/github-action for GitHub Actions, including project build and start commands. The documentation recommends the v7 major tag at the time of the guide reviewed; action and runner guidance can change, so verify the current Cypress GitHub Actions guide before adopting a version.

Adapt the workflow to your repository’s package manager, build process, and start command. The Cypress guide also covers browser selection, caching, containers, and splitting installation from worker jobs. Its documented parallel Cypress execution setup requires recording to Cypress Cloud; parallelizing is not simply a matter of starting more jobs.
Associate screenshots with a pull-request preview
If your CI deploys a preview environment, Argos supports associating the visual result with its URL. Its Cypress integration documents setting the ARGOS_PREVIEW_URL environment variable or passing a previewUrl Cypress option. Use the preview address that corresponds to the commit under test, rather than a shared or stale deployment.
Keep visual comparisons meaningful
A screenshot difference can come from an intentional interface change or from test data, timing, fonts, or the rendering environment. To make review useful:

- Assert that the page has reached the intended state before capturing it.
- Wait for app-specific content or loading indicators to settle; stabilization features cannot replace assertions about the state under test.
- Use consistent browser, viewport, operating system, fonts, and other render inputs when your comparison workflow depends on pixel-level consistency.
- Mask only genuinely irrelevant dynamic regions so a test still catches layout changes around them.
- Review and approve baselines through your team’s intended pull-request process instead of treating every diff as a defect.
Cypress’s visual testing guide describes the tradeoffs between open-source comparison plugins and hosted services. With open-source plugins, the team keeps comparison and baseline management in its own infrastructure and takes responsibility for review and consistent rendering. Hosted services handle more of capture, storage, comparison, and review, and may offer pull-request workflows or cross-browser and viewport rendering, in exchange for subscription cost.
Best Value
Cypress lists Argos, Applitools Eyes, Chromatic, Happo, LambdaTest SmartUI, Percy, SmartBear VisualTest, and Wopee.io as services with Cypress integrations. Choose based on cost, baseline ownership, review flow, infrastructure and data requirements, browser and viewport coverage, and the stability controls you need; the listed services are not a ranking.
What Indian teams should verify
The documented SDK and CI workflow do not prescribe an India-specific installation or runner configuration. The official Argos and Cypress pages cited here do not establish India-specific prices, taxes, payment methods, data residency, or contract availability. If those terms affect procurement or compliance, verify them directly with the relevant provider before adopting a hosted service.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a screenshot or PDF from a URL rather than adding visual review to Cypress, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request API. It is a separate capture workflow, not an Argos replacement inside your Cypress suite.
