Yes. WhatsApp says personal messages are end-to-end encrypted by default, including messages in a Chat Locked conversation. Chat Lock adds a separate layer of protection on your phone: it moves a selected chat behind authentication and hides identifying details in notifications. It controls access to the chat on a device; it is not a separate encryption system.
What end-to-end encryption and Chat Lock each do
| Feature | What it protects | How it works | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| End-to-end encryption | The content of personal messages and calls exchanged by participants | WhatsApp says personal messages and calls are encrypted by default. Its 2016 announcement described default encryption for messages, photos, videos, files, voice messages, and calls for users on the latest app version. | It does not mean every copy, backup, notification, or unlocked screen has the same protection. |
| Chat Lock | Access to selected chats on the device and identifying details shown in notifications | It moves the conversation into a hidden folder behind an extra authentication layer, using a device passcode, biometric authentication, or secret code depending on setup and platform. | It does not add a separate encryption protocol to the messages or encrypt a cloud backup. |
| End-to-end encrypted backup | A saved chat-history backup | You enable this separate setting and protect the backup with an available credential method. | It is not automatically turned on because a chat is locked. |
What Chat Lock hides—and what it does not
WhatsApp says locked chats are hidden behind an extra authentication layer. Notifications for them hide message content and contact information, showing “WhatsApp” or “WhatsApp: 1 new message” instead of the contact name. WhatsApp’s Chat Lock help page says you can lock any chat, including groups and muted chats.

Chat Lock does not prevent calls from contacts in locked chats. On WhatsApp Web, opening locked chats requires a secret code created on the Android or iPhone device, according to WhatsApp’s help documentation. The feature is intended to add protection when someone else might have access to your phone; it does not guarantee privacy if someone can use an already-unlocked device or account. WhatsApp introduced it as “one more layer of security” in its May 15, 2023 announcement.

Can WhatsApp read locked chats?
Chat Lock itself does not change the end-to-end encryption relationship: WhatsApp says personal messages are end-to-end encrypted, and the lock is an on-device access control. The lock should not be taken as proof that every copy of a conversation—such as a backup—or every place content may appear has the same protection.

Are WhatsApp backups encrypted too?
Not necessarily. WhatsApp says Google Account chat backups are not protected by WhatsApp end-to-end encryption unless you separately enable end-to-end encrypted backup. Locking a conversation does not turn that backup setting on. See WhatsApp’s backup encryption guidance.
WhatsApp says an end-to-end encrypted backup can be secured with a passkey, password, or 64-digit encryption key. Keep the required credential accessible: without it, you may not be able to access the backup. WhatsApp explains the credential options in its encrypted backup documentation.
