1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn One IP’s September 2026 sample, VPS addresses without a PTR record were less often listed on the eight public DNS blocklists checked than addresses with one: 9.9% versus 15.6%. That is an observed difference in this sample, not proof that missing reverse DNS makes an IP cleaner—or that either group will work for your email or service.
What the audit found
One IP’s report, published October 2, 2026, examined 360 VPS addresses: 30 sampled from each of 12 providers. It reports that 161 addresses had no PTR record and 199 did. In its September 2026 blocklist snapshot, 16 of the no-PTR addresses appeared on at least one of the eight public DNS blocklists checked, compared with 31 addresses that had PTR records.

| Sample group | Addresses sampled | Listed on at least one checked DNSBL | Observed listing rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| No PTR record | 161 | 16 | 9.9% |
| PTR record present | 199 | 31 | 15.6% |
These are the report’s sample counts and rates, not estimates established for all VPS addresses. The publisher describes PTR coverage as a proxy for whether a provider manages its address space, not a deliverability score. The audit report explains the results, and its raw dataset includes per-address PTR, DNSBL, and RDAP fields, along with method notes.
What reverse DNS tells you—and what it does not
A PTR record maps an IP address back to a host name. It is the reverse counterpart to an A record, which maps a host name to an IP address. PTR presence tells you that a reverse mapping exists; it does not certify that an address is trustworthy, free of abuse, or accepted by a particular recipient.

Cloudflare notes that PTR records historically helped prevent outbound SMTP servers from being blocked, while SPF, DKIM, and DMARC provide better verification of domain ownership. PTR records also remain useful for human-readable names in traceroutes and security tools. The party controlling the address prefix can create its reverse DNS zone; a VPS customer typically needs the provider to let them set or change the PTR for an assigned address. See Cloudflare’s documentation on reverse zones and PTR records.
A DNSBL listing is a separate reputation signal. A listed address may encounter delivery or access problems with systems that consult that list; a clean result on the checked lists is not a guarantee of acceptance. The audit also cautions that public DNSBL data does not measure separate IP-reputation systems used by AI services.

Why the percentages do not establish that no PTR is better
- The result is an association, not a cause. The audit compares two groups in one sample. It does not show that removing or lacking a PTR record reduces blocklist listings.
- The sample is limited. The report selected 30 addresses per provider from announced prefixes using a fixed seed. Its method describes forming a candidate /24 pool and selecting one host address per segment. Inspectable sampling does not make 30 addresses a census of a provider’s network.
- Blocklist status changes. The reported comparison reflects a September 2026 snapshot; listings can change after that collection.
- The lists are not every recipient’s policy. The comparison uses the report’s eight public DNSBLs, not every reputation system a mail recipient or online service may use.
Accordingly, “no PTR” does not mean “spammer,” and “has PTR” does not mean “clean.” The audit establishes only that, among these sampled addresses at that snapshot, the no-PTR group had a lower observed listing rate.
How to use the provider-level results
The report’s provider counts are useful as a limited sample description, not a definitive ranking. Each row below is based on 30 sampled IPs per provider; a DNSBL hit means at least one of the report’s checked lists returned a listing.

One sample-specific detail stands out: the report says all 25 RackNerd hits were on dnsbl.spfbl.net and came from 25 different /24 blocks. That describes the sampled addresses and should not be read as a claim about every address or the provider’s network as a whole. Any choice based on these counts is provisional, because the sample is small and the address you receive may differ.
What to check before using a VPS IP for email
For outbound email, assess the actual address and configuration you will use rather than treating a provider’s sample as a guarantee:

- Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.
- Get the specific IP address. Check the address you will be assigned, not only a provider-level count or a different address shown in a sample.
- Check current DNSBL status. Query the relevant public lists close to the time you plan to send; a snapshot can become stale.
- Confirm PTR control and alignment. Ask whether the provider lets you configure reverse DNS for the assigned IP, and set a meaningful host name consistent with your mail setup. A customer who does not control the address prefix depends on the provider’s cooperation.
- Configure domain authentication. PTR is not a substitute for SPF, DKIM, or DMARC, which address domain ownership and mail authentication in different ways.
- Check recipient requirements. Individual mail providers can apply policies beyond the public DNSBLs in this audit, so a clean lookup cannot guarantee delivery.
For other workloads, judge IP reputation against the service you intend to use. In particular, the audit says its public DNSBL results do not cover the separate reputation systems used by AI services.
