Why 40V and 36V are separate compatibility claims
RYOBI Australia’s battery guidance says tools and batteries designed for different voltage ratings are not interchangeable: How to choose the right 36V battery. Separately, RYOBI’s US listing says, “RYOBI 40V batteries are compatible with any RYOBI 40V product.” That claim is limited to the 40V platform; it does not say a 40V battery works in a 36V tool.

RYOBI UK describes a 36V MAX POWER battery and charger range, while RYOBI US markets 40V products. These regional labels do not establish that every 36V and 40V model is electrically or mechanically identical. The official pages cited here do not provide a universal conversion chart, so rely on the platform and model identified for your particular tool.
How to check the right battery for your tool
- Read the voltage printed on the tool’s rating label. Do not identify the platform by appearance or memory.
- Write down the exact tool model and check its manual or official product page for the specified battery platform.
- Match both the battery and charger to the platform and model specified for that tool. RYOBI UK describes its 36V MAX POWER charger as compatible with 36V MAX POWER batteries: How to Choose the Right RYOBI Batteries and Chargers.
- If a seller claims a 36V/40V cross-fit, ask the seller or RYOBI support to confirm it for your exact tool and battery models before purchasing. The cited manufacturer guidance does not verify a universal cross-fit.
What about chargers and amp-hour ratings?
Use the charger specified for the battery’s platform and model in the product manual. The available manufacturer guidance supports 36V MAX POWER charger use with 36V MAX POWER batteries; it does not support charging a 36V battery with a 40V charger, or vice versa.

A matching amp-hour (Ah) rating is not proof of compatibility. Capacity alone does not identify the platform or confirm fit. Check the voltage and model requirements first.
Choosing a replacement battery
If your tool is confirmed to be a RYOBI 40V model, the RYOBI US listing identifies the 40V 4Ah Lithium High Performance EDGE Battery as model OP40406TA: 40V 4Ah Lithium High Performance EDGE Battery. Treat it only as an example for a confirmed 40V tool; check the exact model, regional listing, and capacity requirement before purchase. It is not established as suitable for a 36V tool.

For a 36V tool, use the battery model specified for that exact tool in current regional documentation. A 2019 RYOBI Nordic catalogue shows that RYOBI marketed a 36V garden-tool platform in that region, but it is historical context, not current compatibility guidance: RYOBI OPE Catalogue 2019 Nordics.
