Mobile devices are a major part of video streaming’s future, but they are not set to replace TVs, computers, or fixed broadband for every kind of viewing. Phones are especially important for short-form social clips. Long-form, high-resolution video still has reasons to be watched over Wi-Fi or fixed broadband on a larger screen. The more likely future is a mix of screens and connections, shaped by what people watch and where they watch it.
What the evidence says about mobile video
Mobile video is a substantial source of network traffic, but network traffic is not the same thing as total viewing time, device ownership, or a measure of which screen people prefer. Ericsson’s current data and forecasts page reports that mobile network traffic growth exceeded expectations over the 12 months covered by its Q2 2026 update, while its visualizer identifies video as a major mobile traffic category. Those figures provide context for the importance of video on mobile networks; they do not show that phones are replacing other screens. Short clips and long-form streaming behave differently
In a November 2025 analysis, Ericsson examined one week of traffic across four European mobile service-provider networks. Social-media-generated video accounted for 70–80% of smartphone video traffic across three of the networks; the fourth was nearly 70%. Global video-on-demand services accounted for less than 10%. Netflix contributed 3–6% of total video traffic in the sampled networks, while other named global video-on-demand services generally contributed less than 1% each. These are sample-specific traffic shares, not universal measures of what people watch: some traffic was unclassified, and Ericsson notes that video may also appear in “Other” and social-networking categories. The distinction matters. Short social clips suit quick, frequent viewing on a phone. Long-form services can also be watched on phones, but their smaller share of smartphone video traffic in this sample does not establish that people reject phones for longer programs. Ericsson suggests users may prefer high-resolution video over Wi-Fi or fixed broadband and on larger screens; that is the company’s interpretation, not a causal result demonstrated by the traffic analysis.

Streaming quality depends on more than the network generation
Ericsson found a better streaming experience on 5G than on 4G in the four sampled networks. For long-form video-on-demand, the analysis reported higher bitrates, shorter stall times, and higher estimated quality of experience (QoE). For short-form social clips, it found faster startup and smoother playback. The result describes those networks and that collection period; it does not guarantee the same improvement on every carrier, plan, device, or route.
Connection technology is only one part of the experience. Ericsson identifies resolution, frame rate, codec, time-to-content, rebuffering, adaptive resolution, and smartphone capabilities as relevant factors. Streaming services can adjust resolution to fit available bandwidth, so a connection that fluctuates can affect sharpness as well as interruptions. A capable phone cannot make weak coverage reliable, and a fast network cannot remove every limit imposed by a device or the service.

Phone capabilities affect playback
Ericsson’s model comparisons found better bitrate performance and estimated QoE for flagship phones than for entry-level models in the sampled networks. This supports the narrower point that device capability can influence the experience; it does not establish that everyone needs a flagship phone. Screen characteristics and video decoding capabilities matter alongside connection quality, content, and the service’s encoding choices.

In Ericsson’s analysis, professionally produced and optimized services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime delivered higher bitrates and higher estimated QoE scores than social-media video. QoE is an estimate calculated from factors including bitrate, resolution, stalls, and video length; Ericsson cautions that estimates may be less precise for encrypted traffic. The comparison concerns the analyzed streams, not a guarantee that one service or device will always look better.

What this means for the future
The evidence points to a shift in where and how video is watched, rather than a single screen taking over. Mobile networks carry substantial video traffic, and short-form social video dominated smartphone video traffic in Ericsson’s limited sample. At the same time, that sample does not measure a universal preference between phones and televisions, nor does it establish that long-form streaming is moving wholesale to mobile devices.
Ericsson reported 660 million additional 5G subscriptions globally during 2025. This is a subscription count, not a count of unique people or phones; it signals expanding 5G adoption, not a direct forecast of mobile video viewing. For viewers, the practical choice will continue to depend on content and setting: short clips fit naturally into mobile use, while a larger display and a strong Wi-Fi or fixed-broadband connection may better suit high-resolution, long-form viewing.
