Microsoft Advertising image extensions are worth testing when you have a relevant photograph that adds context to a search ad and can measure whether it helps your campaign. Microsoft describes potential benefits—including product promotion, brand awareness and better click quality—but its public overview does not quantify a performance lift or guarantee results. Treat the feature as a test, not a sure-fire improvement.

When are image extensions worth testing?
They are a reasonable trial when the image is closely tied to the advertised offer and gives searchers useful information or recognizable visual context. A product, place or service shown clearly may make the ad more informative; an unrelated or merely decorative image may add little.

- Relevance: Does the image match the query and offer?
- Creative effort: Can you provide a suitable image without disproportionate production work?
- Incremental results: Do comparable results show a change in the outcomes you care about?
- Economics: Are any additional qualified outcomes worth the media and creative costs?
- Operational fit: Can your team manage and review the asset in its current Microsoft Advertising workflow?
If the image is weakly related, takes substantial effort to produce, or cannot be evaluated against campaign goals, there is little reason to add it just because the option exists.

How do you measure whether an image extension is working?
Choose success measures before launch. For a traffic-quality goal, examine qualified clicks and click-through rate; for business outcomes, consider conversion rate, cost per acquisition or return. Interpret each metric in context: a higher click-through rate is not automatically valuable if the extra clicks do not lead to useful outcomes.
Where possible, use a controlled test or compare comparable traffic and periods. A simple before-and-after comparison can mislead if bids, targeting, budgets, landing pages, seasonality or other creative changed at the same time. This is practical measurement guidance, not a Microsoft-prescribed test protocol. Keep the extension only when your account’s results support its use for your goals.

What does it cost?
Microsoft’s search ads overview says standard ad charges apply when someone clicks or interacts, depending on the extension and campaign setup. The overview does not specify a separate image-extension fee or establish a specific billing rule for image interactions, so check current account terms rather than assuming either that the extension is entirely free or that it carries a distinct charge. Are image extensions the same as Display and Native images or Product Ads?
No. An image extension is a photograph added to a search ad. Microsoft’s Display and Native overview describes image assets in those ad formats separately; it also notes that search creative may, in some cases, extend into native placements using available assets that include image extensions.
