Why Dyson’s New HushJet Air Purifier Looks Like a Jet Engine

Dyson’s HushJet Purifier Compact looks jet-engine-inspired because its star-shaped outlet is designed to shape a fast stream of air and draw surrounding room air into it. The “jet engine” label describes the airflow design, not an aircraft engine inside the purifier—and it does not, by itself, prove better air cleaning.

Why does Dyson’s new air purifier look like a jet engine?

The HushJet Purifier Compact replaces the loop-shaped amplifier found on some Dyson air-treatment products with a star-shaped nozzle. TechRadar reports that the motor is larger than the outlet, so air is pushed through a smaller opening to form a faster jet. The nozzle’s shape is intended to encourage nearby room air to join that stream, a process called entrainment. TechRadar’s report on the HushJet likens the nozzle to a jet-engine design and, more familiarly, to a hair-dryer concentrator.

That is an analogy for how the airflow is shaped. The available reporting does not describe a literal aircraft jet engine in the appliance. Dyson uses the broader term Air Multiplier for systems that induce and entrain surrounding air to amplify an initial stream; its explanation for the Pure Hot+Cool Link describes an impeller drawing air through a filter before accelerating it into an annular loop. That page explains the general principle, not a teardown or model-specific account of the HushJet. Dyson’s Air Multiplier explanation

What does the star-shaped nozzle actually do?

It enables entrainment without a loop’s center gap

Dyson engineer Sophie Harold told TechRadar: “The new star nozzle is exciting because it still does entrainment without having that gap in the middle.” She also said: “By having the bending edges, it’s still encouraging air from the surrounding region to join in with the fast jet.” In other words, the shape is intended to guide the outgoing airflow while letting it draw in air from around it. Harold said the compact form could suit a desk without an amplifier getting in the way of a monitor. These are design explanations from Dyson, not independent measurements of how much air the HushJet moves.

#1 Best Overall
Dyson Hushjet Compact Air Purifier, Powerful, Whisper-quiet (White/Silver)
  • Engineered to keep air cleaner in spaces where it matters most. Covers up to 203 ft² (4.8 ACH) for thorough whole-room purification.
  • Compact and powerful, yet quiet. Engineered for minimal disturbance.
  • With Dyson air purifiers, the whole machine is fully sealed. Which means they don’t emit pollutants and allergens¹ back into the air you’re breathing.
  • The 360° Electrostatic filter captures 99.97% of pollutants as small as 0.3 microns,² such as allergens.¹ Lasts up to five years,³ reducing filter replacement hassle and costs.
  • The 360° Activated Carbon filter removes pet and cooking odors,⁴ and even gases such as NO₂.² Traps airborne pollutants on a highly porous surface, capturing unpleasant smells and harmful gases.²

It is also intended to manage turbulence and noise

TechRadar reports that the star geometry is meant to reduce turbulence in the airflow and, in turn, its noise. The reporter listened to the purifier on its lowest setting in a Dyson anechoic chamber and described it as very quiet. That is a limited observation at one setting, not a comparative laboratory test, and it does not establish how noisy the appliance will be at other settings or in a typical room.

How is the HushJet different from Dyson’s other purifier shapes?

Dyson’s outlets reflect different airflow and packaging approaches; a star nozzle, loop amplifier and cone are not interchangeable designs. The available sources do not provide an independent side-by-side test of their airflow, cleaning performance or noise.

  • HEPA H13⁴ grade filter is 3.8x larger than previous generation and lasts up to 5 years.
Design Outlet and airflow approach What the evidence establishes
HushJet Purifier Compact A star-shaped nozzle forms a fast jet intended to entrain surrounding room air. TechRadar reports the design explanation and a 9.1-inch (23-centimeter) diameter. No independent comparative purification, airflow or noise result is established in the cited coverage.
Some Dyson loop or amplifier models An annular outlet projects airflow; Dyson describes induced and entrained air amplifying the initial stream. Dyson’s Air Multiplier explanation covers the Pure Hot+Cool Link technology, not every loop model or the HushJet specifically.
Dyson Big+Quiet Dyson’s Cone Aerodynamics merges two air streams over a smooth surface using the Coanda effect to project a concentrated stream. These are manufacturer descriptions for a separate product family. Dyson’s announcement reports “40 million data points over more than three years” for Big+Quiet Breeze-mode research, not HushJet testing. Dyson’s Big+Quiet announcement

Dyson also describes sealed HEPA H13 filtration, a K-Carbon layer and a catalytic formaldehyde filter for Big+Quiet Formaldehyde. Those specifications belong to that product family; they should not be treated as HushJet specifications.

Is the HushJet really compact enough for a desk?

TechRadar reports a diameter of 9.1 inches (23 centimeters) and cautions that the purifier may not feel ultra-compact in ordinary desk use. Whether that footprint works depends on available surface area and the space needed around the unit; the report does not establish a universal fit for every desk. Dyson engineer Sophie Harold’s monitor-clearance point concerns the absence of a loop amplifier, not the purifier’s overall footprint.

Does the jet-inspired design mean better air purification?

No conclusion about superior purification follows from the nozzle shape alone. The available sources do not establish an independent comparative HushJet figure for clean-air delivery, purification rate, energy use or noise. Dyson’s US air-treatment page describes its range in terms of integrated sensors, HEPA and carbon filtration, and Air Multiplier technology, but those range-level statements do not confirm the exact configuration of every HushJet version. For context, Dyson’s general purifier explainer discusses filtration and sealed airflow, but model-specific performance and filter details should come from the page for the exact product being considered. Dyson UK’s air-purifier explainer

What should you check before choosing one?

  • Placement: Compare the reported 9.1-inch (23-centimeter) diameter with the desk or floor space available where you plan to use it.
  • Air direction: Consider whether you want a compact outlet that directs a fast stream into the room, or a different outlet geometry such as a loop or cone.
  • Noise evidence: Treat the low-setting listening impression reported by TechRadar as an observation, not a promise about sound at other settings or a comparison with alternatives.
  • Filtration and upkeep: Verify filtration claims and the replacement-filter part number for the exact model and region. Dyson’s US range page lists a replacement filter module, but does not establish that module’s compatibility with every HushJet version.
  • Other functions: Check whether the particular model is only a purifier or also provides functions such as heating, cooling or humidification; the cited HushJet nozzle reporting does not establish those extras.
  • Local availability: Confirm availability and model specifications with Dyson or an authorized retailer in your region rather than assuming they are the same worldwide.
