Yes—several graphics cards in a U.S. retailer snapshot dated October 3, 2026 were listed above their manufacturers’ launch reference prices. The size of the premium varied by model, and the figures describe one retailer on one day, not the whole market. To judge whether a card is expensive, compare the exact model and memory configuration, its current total price, and the right launch benchmark.
How high were GPU prices in the October 2026 snapshot?
Digital Citizen checked new-product listings sold by Newegg in the United States on October 3, 2026. It excluded refurbished and open-box products. Each sampled listing was above the model’s launch price:

| Graphics card | Sampled Newegg listing | Launch reference | Listing premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB | $799.99 | $429 | 86% |
| GeForce RTX 5070 | $869.99 | $549 | 58% |
| GeForce RTX 5070 Ti | $1,169.99 | $749 | 56% |
| GeForce RTX 5080 | $1,679.99 | $999 | 68% |
| Radeon RX 9070 XT | $799.99 | $599 | 34% |
These are reported listings, not market averages. The report’s scope is explicitly limited to one retailer and one day; actual offers can change, and prices elsewhere may differ. Digital Citizen’s October 2026 snapshot

A separate October 2026 update from Tom’s Hardware describes the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB as nearly twice its $429 launch reference in the worst cases, and says RTX 5090 prices can exceed four times launch price when available. Those are model-specific extremes, not an average for all GPUs. Tom’s Hardware’s GPU price and buying guide

What does “GPU price” mean?
Three different figures are often treated as though they were interchangeable:
- Launch MSRP or suggested retail price: the manufacturer’s historical reference when a model launched. It is a useful comparison point, not a guarantee of what every board-partner card costs now.
- Retail listing: the price attached to a particular product and seller at a specific time. A single listing above launch price establishes that offer’s premium only.
- Lowest offer, average, or median: price-watch services may report one of these statistics across their own listings and time periods. A minimum is not an average, and neither can be directly equated with a one-day retailer sample.
Make sure any comparison uses the same model, memory configuration, country, currency, and a close date. Also check whether the number includes tax and shipping, and whether the card is new, refurbished, or open-box.

Which launch prices are useful benchmarks?
These manufacturer-published figures are historical launch references from 2025, not current prices guaranteed for every board-partner model or retailer listing.

Why are GPU prices high?
Tom’s Hardware’s August 2026 analysis points to high-speed memory costs, VRAM, and AI-driven demand as contributors to pricing pressure. It also reported that discounts below MSRP had been scarce during major sale events. This is the publication’s analysis, not a manufacturer statement proving why any particular listing is above launch price. Tom’s Hardware’s analysis of pricing trends
Those factors can help explain the broader environment, but they do not establish a precise cause for every premium. A card’s model, seller, configuration, availability, and the date of the listing all matter when assessing a specific offer.

How to tell whether a current offer is worth considering
- Match the product precisely. Compare the same GPU model and VRAM configuration rather than using a broad “RTX 5070” or “Radeon” price as a substitute.
- Identify the price statistic. Label your comparison as launch MSRP or SEP, current listing, lowest available offer, average, or median. Do not compare a minimum from a tracker with a retailer’s single listing as if they measure the same thing.
- Check the seller and condition. Confirm who sells and ships the card, whether it is new, refurbished, or open-box, and what warranty applies. Retailers can switch to third-party offers, so verify the seller’s legitimacy.
- Compare checkout totals. Include tax and shipping where applicable; the product-page price alone may not be the amount you pay.
- Judge value for your workload. Consider performance at your target resolution and in the applications or games you use, VRAM capacity, relevant software features and game support, as well as seller and warranty terms. Specifications alone do not describe the full gaming experience, and feature support differs between NVIDIA and AMD.
There is no universal best-value card without a defined workload and a current, like-for-like price check. Retail offers and seller identity can change, so verify both before purchasing. Tom’s Hardware’s guidance on checking GPU offers
Can buyers expect prices to fall soon?
The available evidence does not establish when prices will fall or by how much. It offers no sufficiently supported manufacturer forecast for a specific future price path. Treat promises of an imminent discount, shortage, or release-driven price change cautiously unless they are backed by current, verifiable information.
