No—not by market volume. Foldable smartphones are growing and drawing attention, but Omdia’s August 2026 outlook still puts them in the premium niche: it forecasts 45 million global shipments by 2030, less than 3% of all smartphone shipments. Growth shows that the category is advancing; it does not show that foldables have become a routine choice for most buyers.
What does “mainstream” mean for foldable phones?
There is no single threshold for mainstream adoption in the available figures. For a practical market-volume test, foldables would need to account for a substantial share of smartphone shipments. Omdia’s forecast of less than 3% by 2030 points the other way. Shipment figures also do not tell us how many consumers own a foldable, want one, or regard it as a normal purchase: shipments are not the same as end-customer sales or the active installed base.

The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: foldables are an established premium category with meaningful growth potential, but they remain a small part of the overall smartphone market.

- Omdia estimated 18.2 million global foldable smartphone shipments in 2025, up 6% year over year.
- Omdia reported 5.1 million global shipments in the first half of 2026, down 21.6% year over year.
- Omdia forecasts 45 million global shipments in 2030, still less than 3% of total smartphone shipments.
Another measure illustrates how a fast-growing category can remain small overall: Counterpoint Research put foldables at 2.5% of global smartphone shipments in Q3 2025. That is a quarterly share, not a full-year ownership figure.
These estimates and forecasts come from different publishers and periods, so they should not be treated as one continuous series. For example, IDC’s December 2025 forecast projected 20.6 million worldwide foldable shipments in 2025 and 30% year-over-year growth in 2026. That was an earlier outlook, not a replacement for Omdia’s later 2025 estimate and 1H 2026 result.
Why can foldables grow without becoming mainstream?
A small base can produce growth without changing the market’s overall shape
Year-over-year growth measures change within the foldable category, not its share of all smartphones. Even a growing category can remain a niche when its starting volume is small. Omdia’s 2030 forecast makes that distinction clear: shipments are expected to rise substantially, yet still represent less than 3% of the global total.

Regional momentum is not global adoption
Foldable demand can vary by region. Counterpoint Research reported that the North American foldable market expanded 28% in 2025 and that Samsung held 51% of the regional market. Those are North American figures; they do not establish the global market’s growth rate or overall consumer adoption.
Shipment data cannot answer every consumer question
Analyst shipment estimates show devices moving through the market, not whether most consumers consider them affordable, durable, or desirable. The available figures do not establish a representative consumer ownership or preference rate.
Are all foldable phones following the same path?
No. The two main designs serve different needs, and their shipment trends have diverged.

| Form factor | What it offers | What recent figures say |
|---|---|---|
| Book-style | Opens into a larger viewing area suited to tablet-like use and multitasking; wide-format designs can also provide a wider outer display. | Omdia reported that book-style devices made up 69% of global foldable shipments in 1H 2026. Counterpoint forecast a 65% book-style share for full-year 2026, compared with 52% in 2025. |
| Flip-style | Folds into a more compact shape, prioritizing portability over an expanded, tablet-like screen. | Omdia reported a sharp decline in flip-type shipments in 1H 2026. |
The figures in the book-style row are not directly interchangeable: Omdia’s 69% is an observed first-half 2026 share, while Counterpoint’s 65% is a full-year 2026 forecast. Together, they indicate that book-style phones are gaining relative weight, not that every foldable design is growing at the same pace.
What is still holding back broader adoption?
Omdia identifies several practical considerations that can make a foldable a harder choice than a conventional smartphone:
- Premium pricing: The purchase cost can limit the category to buyers willing to pay more for the folding design.
- Camera trade-offs: Buyers should compare the cameras on the exact device rather than assume its price guarantees the best camera system.
- Repair costs: A repair can affect the total cost of ownership, so warranty coverage and local service terms matter alongside the purchase price.
- Different use cases: A compact flip and an expanded book-style phone solve different problems. A foldable is most compelling when its particular form factor fits how someone uses a phone.
These are category-level considerations, not a model-by-model price or repair comparison. Costs and support depend on the specific device, market, warranty, and service provider.

How should a prospective buyer read the market outlook?
Omdia describes foldables as a compelling growth story while also forecasting that they will remain under 3% of smartphone shipments in 2030. Both points can be true: the category can be commercially important to phone makers and expand quickly from a small base without becoming a mass-market default.
For buyers, the market label matters less than the ownership decision. Compare the exact phone’s form factor, camera capabilities, price, repair options, and warranty terms with what you need from a smartphone. Shipment growth alone is not evidence that a foldable will offer better value or reliability for an individual buyer.
