Yes—but these are specialist fire-management drones, not consumer aircraft, and the “fireballs” are small incendiary spheres used to start controlled burns. Fire crews use them to remove vegetation fuel or influence a wildfire’s path; they do not drop them to extinguish flames.
What are the “fireballs”?
They are incendiary spheres, often called “Dragon Eggs,” released from a purpose-built hopper beneath a remotely piloted aircraft. The spheres fall through vegetation and ignite after reaching the ground. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says ignition begins about 20–30 seconds after impact; that timing describes the system in its discussion, not a guarantee for every device or field condition. FAA discussion of drone aerial ignition.
One U.S. example is IGNIS. A configuration described in a 2023 GovTech report combines GPS navigation and an infrared camera with a hopper that can carry up to 400 potassium-permanganate spheres, each 1.5 inches across. The drone injects the spheres with antifreeze in flight, which causes them to ignite after landing. The same report estimates 50–75 acres of ignition per mission; that is a reported estimate, not a universal coverage figure. GovTech report on drone ignition systems.
Why would firefighters start a fire?
In a prescribed burn, crews set a planned fire under managed conditions to reduce accumulated vegetation. During some back-burning or burnout operations, they ignite fuel ahead of an advancing wildfire so less material remains for the wildfire to consume. The aim is to shape fire behavior—not to fight flame with flame indiscriminately.

FAA wildland-fire personnel describe using aerial ignition to add small amounts of fire and “slowly walk the fire down from the ridge top.” Carefully controlled ignition can help keep a surface fire from developing into a crown fire, which spreads through tree canopies. Whether a burn can proceed depends on trained crews, suitable weather, coordination with other aircraft, and local fire-management rules. FAA discussion of drone aerial ignition.
Where are these drones being used?
Fire and Rescue NSW says its firefighters use remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) to drop incendiary balls into bushland for hazard-reduction burns. Its Grafton station reported that it had an RPAS licence in February 2021 and later upgraded to a DJI Matrice 30; it also described pilots licensed for day and night operations. The agency presents aerial ignition as one use among several, including incident assessment, search operations, and bushfire intelligence. Fire and Rescue NSW.

The Australian Government’s RPAS Bushfire Roadmap says small-to-medium multirotors carrying purpose-built incendiary payloads have been trialled for prescribed burning and could support back-burning. The proposed operational advantage is to place ignition without sending personnel on foot or in a helicopter to each point, while retaining precision. Australian Government RPAS Bushfire Roadmap.
How do drones compare with helicopters and ground crews?
No method is best for every burn. The choice depends on terrain, scale, weather, aircraft availability, risk to personnel, and the fire agency’s procedures. The public sources describe complementary methods, rather than a universal ranking.

| Factor | Drone aerial ignition | Helicopter aerial ignition | Ground ignition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personnel exposure | Moves ignition placement away from personnel on foot and avoids a pilot aboard the aircraft. | Can reduce the need for crews to reach every ignition point on foot, but involves a crewed low-level flight. | Requires personnel to work at ignition locations, exposing them to local terrain and fire conditions. |
| Placement and scale | Can offer precise placement. An IGNIS configuration was reported with capacity for up to 400 spheres; the cited 50–75-acre mission estimate is specific to that report. | Remains relevant to larger landscape-scale work; the cited sources do not give a comparable payload or area figure. | Allows crews to place fire directly along a planned line; the cited sources do not state a comparable payload or coverage figure. |
| Smoke, darkness, and steep terrain | Remote operation can help in difficult terrain, and Fire and Rescue NSW describes pilots licensed for day and night work. The sources do not establish that drones can safely operate in all smoke or visibility conditions. | Can reach broad or difficult areas, but aircraft operation must be coordinated with other aviation activity and conditions. | Depends on crew access and safe working conditions on the ground. |
| Airspace and regulation | Requires coordination with traditional aviation, operational procedures, and deconfliction. It is not simply a matter of flying a drone over a burn. | Requires aviation coordination as a crewed aircraft operation. | Does not require an aerial vehicle, though it still must follow the burn’s operational approvals and safety rules. |
| Weather and approval | Burns require suitable conditions and approval by responsible fire managers; the sources provide no universal weather thresholds. | Likewise depends on burn conditions, aircraft availability, and operational approval. | Likewise depends on burn conditions and operational approval. |
| Training and cost | Requires specialist pilots, equipment, and mission procedures. The cited sources do not provide a comparable current purchase or operating cost. | Requires a helicopter and qualified crew. The cited sources do not provide a comparable current cost. | Requires trained fire personnel and ignition equipment. The cited sources do not provide a comparable current cost. |
The practical distinction is that drones may make small, carefully placed ignitions without putting a pilot in a low-level aircraft, while helicopters can support broader aerial work. Ground crews remain important where direct access and control are appropriate. None of those advantages removes the need for a fire manager to assess conditions and authorize the mission. Australian Government RPAS Bushfire Roadmap; FAA discussion of drone aerial ignition.
Can the public buy or fly a fireball drone?
The documented systems are specialist equipment used in agency operations, not ordinary consumer drones. The available sources do not establish an open retail channel, current price, or consumer affiliate program for IGNIS or Dragon Egg systems. Buying a general-purpose drone does not make it suitable or lawful for carrying incendiary payloads.

Do not fly a drone near an active wildfire. The U.S. Wildland Fire Service says unauthorized drones can force aerial firefighting to stop while crews confirm the aircraft is clear. It recorded 53 unauthorized drone incursions during wildfires in 2025, including 44 that interfered with or threatened aerial operations. U.S. Wildland Fire Service guidance on drones and wildfires.
