Some readers do find Fandom wikis frustrating—especially on phones, where they report disruptive ads, freezing, or crashes. But the available reports are anecdotal: they do not show that every Fandom wiki is unusable or that every reader sees the same experience. If an ad is the problem, you can report it to Fandom; if a wiki is hard to use, check whether its community maintains an alternative.
What “unusable” means to readers—and what it does not prove
In a May 2024 Reddit discussion, readers described interruptions from ads, pages freezing or crashing, and particular difficulty using Fandom on mobile. Other participants reported milder experiences or suggested that the problems might differ by device, ad blocking, or wiki. One Google Play review excerpt also complained that popup ads made the app unusable.

These are examples of individual experiences, not a survey or platform-wide performance test. They cannot establish how common the problems are, how many ads readers see, or whether Fandom is uniformly worse than it was before. The evidence available does not include representative measurements across wikis, countries, and devices. (Sources: May 2024 r/wikia discussion; Google Play app listing and review.)

What Fandom says about advertising
Fandom’s Community Creation and Content Policy, revised September 22, 2025, says community creators must agree to the display of ads. It also says text on Fandom communities is available under a free-content license. The policy describes platform rules; it does not establish whether a given page is comfortable to read. #1 Best Overall
In a July 24, 2024 community blog post, Fandom said it had audited ad technical performance to improve loading speed and avoid memory concerns on users’ devices. The company also said it was strengthening and enforcing policies with third-party advertisers to remove disruptive or unexpected ad experiences, particularly on mobile. Those are Fandom’s descriptions of its efforts, not independent confirmation that the changes resolved reader complaints. Read Fandom’s post on improving the ad experience.
How to report a disruptive ad
Fandom’s support instructions say to provide details that can help identify the ad and reproduce the experience. Because ads are geo-targeted, the country and device information matter. Fandom says its advertising manager may review a report and may be able to remove the ad; removal is not guaranteed.
- Open Fandom’s instructions for reporting a bad ad and follow the support route there.
- Include the wiki or community where you saw it and describe which ad appeared and what made it disruptive.
- Attach a screenshot and the ad URL if available.
- Identify your operating system and country so the team has context for the display you encountered.
Fandom’s support index also groups ad issues with bug, vandalism, and copyright reporting, and links to a known-issues section. Check that page for current reporting routes and known problems: Fandom Support.
How to check whether a wiki has a useful alternative
Readers in the Reddit discussion mentioned wiki.gg and Miraheze, but those mentions are leads—not a complete directory or an endorsement. A host may have an active wiki for one game or show and none for another. Look up the specific fandom and inspect the candidate site before relying on it.
Rank #3
- Coverage: Does it contain the pages and topics you need, at useful depth?
- Freshness: Are important pages receiving recent edits?
- Community maintenance: Is the wiki still maintained by people familiar with that fandom?
- Reading experience: Is it readable on your device, including on mobile?
- Stability and support: Does the site appear active, and can you find a way to get help or report issues?
- Hosting and funding: Check the alternative’s own current information about its control and funding rather than assuming its model or terms.
Finding another host does not guarantee that the wiki is complete, current, or a better fit. Compare the specific community and pages you need; availability and maintenance can change.

For a specific disruptive ad, send Fandom the details it requests. For persistent difficulty with a particular wiki, look for a current community-maintained alternative and compare its coverage and upkeep. Browser tools that affect ads may also be an option, but compatibility and availability vary; check the tool and browser information for your device rather than assuming a particular setup will work.
