Are Face Computers Finally Getting Good? Meta and XREAL Take Different Paths

XREAL One, Meta Ray-Ban Display and Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 serve different jobs. Here’s what their displays and advertised specs do—and don’t—tell you.

“Face computers” are getting more capable, but Meta’s and XREAL’s glasses are not interchangeable—and their advertised features do not prove that either pair works as an all-day computer. XREAL One is built around a virtual screen; Meta’s Ray-Ban line spans camera-and-audio glasses with no display and a separate Display model with a small in-lens screen. Which is “good” depends on what you want to do.

First, “XR glasses” can mean very different things

XREAL One and Meta’s glasses address different jobs. XREAL One is a display-first product intended to put a virtual screen in view. The standard Ray-Ban Meta glasses focus on camera, open-ear audio and AI features, without an in-lens display. Meta Ray-Ban Display is a distinct model that adds a small screen in one lens and a wristband input system.

That distinction matters: comparing all Ray-Ban Meta glasses to a virtual-screen device as if they offered the same kind of display misses what each is for.

What the displays actually offer

XREAL One: a virtual screen

XREAL describes XREAL One as AR glasses with an X1 spatial-computing chip and 3DoF spatial features. Its US product page lists a Sony 0.68-inch micro-OLED display, a 50-degree field of view and a virtual screen advertised at up to 147 inches. Those are manufacturer specifications and promotional screen-size framing—not a promise that every wearer sees a literal room-sized screen. XREAL One product information

XREAL One Pro AR Glasses with X1 Chip, 171" 120Hz FHD Display, Native 3 DoF
  • XREAL's Self-Developed X1 Spatial Computing Chip: Delivers Native 3DoF tracking with ultra-low 3ms M2P latency, ensuring stable visuals even during rapid movements. With the optional XREAL Eye, full 6DoF spatial anchoring. It delivers high processing power, seamless compatibility with devices, and distortion-free visuals through advanced stabilization.
  • The New Optic Engine-X-Prism Optics: XREAL’s advanced lens and projection system—ultra-slim, precision-engineered optics that project a large, sharp virtual screen right in front of your eyes, while still letting you see your real surroundings clearly. With a best-in-class 57° FOV, Optic Engine 4.0 recreates the feeling of watching a massive 171-inch screen from four meters away—all in lightweight, compact design. Its advanced anti-glare design minimizes reflections and light interference, enhancing clarity and immersion.
  • Experience True AR with 6 DoF, Spatial Anchor Anytime: Pairing with XREAL Eye, anchor your screen anywhere in your room, so it stays perfectly fixed in place—even as you walk around, lean in, or change your position. Unlike 3DoF, which keeps the screen at a constant distance relative to your head movements, 6DoF keeps your virtual screen locked to a real spot in your space for true spatial freedom and a more natural, immersive AR experience.
  • REAL 3D – Turn everything you watch into an immersive 3D experience: REAL 3D Now Available on All One Series Glasses, instantly transforming all your content—from games and movies to apps and photos—into true 3D with a single switch. Experience richer depth and lifelike visuals across everything you watch or play.
  • 57°FOV, 171'' Spatial Screen – More Immersive Visual Experience: Experience a virtual screen starting at 171 inches wide, filling your view with blockbuster visuals, thanks to XREAL’s advanced optics and industry-leading 57° FOV. Powered by Sony’s 0.55' Micro-OLED display technology and a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, get swept into your games or movies with immersion that rivals traditional home theaters—without the size, setup, or space concerns.

This is the more direct fit if your aim is to view content on a large private virtual screen. The listed specifications describe the display system, but do not establish how comfortable it is for a particular wearer, how legible it will look to them, or how well it suits long sessions.

Meta Ray-Ban Display: information in one lens

Ray-Ban lists Meta Ray-Ban Display’s right-lens screen as full-color and 600×600 pixels. The company says it can be used to view and reply to messages hands-free. Meta’s 2025 product announcement also describes a neural wristband and use cases including message interaction, visual answers, and camera preview and zoom. These are announced capabilities, not proof that the glasses provide a seamless everyday computing experience. Ray-Ban Meta Display product information Meta’s 2025 announcement

The two display formats suggest different uses: XREAL presents a virtual screen, while Meta presents brief information and interactions through a small in-lens display. Neither format, from its specifications alone, establishes that text will be comfortable to read for every wearer.

Meta’s glasses without a display are a different proposition

Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) is the relevant comparison if you want hands-free camera, audio and AI features but do not need a screen. Meta’s 2025 announcement says Gen 2 adds 3K Ultra HD video capture and improved battery life compared with the previous generation. Ray-Ban’s feature page lists open-ear speakers, a six-microphone array and camera functions. These features do not mean the glasses have an in-lens display. • 62G — LIGHT ENOUGH TO FORGET — At just 62g, with three nose-pad sizes and flexible temples, the a01+ stays comfortable through a long movie or flight, even lying down.

How to choose by the task you actually have

  • Watching on a virtual screen: XREAL One is the product in this group presented for that job. Its screen-size figure is an advertised specification, not a guarantee of the same perceived result for every wearer.
  • Checking messages or seeing brief information: Meta Ray-Ban Display is designed around an in-lens display and wristband interaction. Its announced features do not establish that it replaces a phone or computer.
  • Capturing hands-free photos or video, listening, or using AI without a visual display: Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) is the display-free option among these models, with Meta announcing 3K Ultra HD video capture and Ray-Ban listing open-ear speakers and microphones.

Before choosing any pair, consider the host-device or connectivity requirements for the tasks you care about, how the glasses fit, prescription support, comfort over time, privacy cues and social acceptability, battery life in your intended use, and whether features are available in your region. The cited official pages do not establish a controlled head-to-head comparison of comfort, legibility, latency, prescription support or all-day use. Current price, stock, regional availability and prescription compatibility are not established here; check current product information before buying.

So, are face computers finally getting good?

They are becoming more specialized, not converging on one universal face computer. XREAL One’s advertised virtual-screen approach and Meta Ray-Ban Display’s glanceable in-lens display point toward different kinds of use; standard Ray-Ban Meta glasses remain a camera-and-audio option without a screen. Meta’s 2025 announcement described Display with the line, “This isn’t about strapping a phone to your face.” That is the company’s promotional positioning, not evidence that the device replaces a phone—or that any of these glasses is already a good all-day computer.
