Choose an insert for a specific fit or support need, and judge it in your own cycling shoes—not by a promise of “ultimate comfort” or extra watts.
What cycling shoe inserts can—and cannot—do
An insert may alter plantar contact, pressure patterns, and the sense of support under the arch or heel. Those are measurable or perceivable changes; they are not the same as proving that an insert prevents pain, improves cycling performance, or feels better over long rides.

A 2014 systematic review found only six eligible laboratory studies, with methodological quality scores from 7 to 10 out of 14. The reviewers found some evidence that orthoses increase midfoot contact area and pressure beneath the big toe, but no power benefit in the available studies. They could not reach definitive conclusions about lower-limb movement, oxygen consumption, or whether wedges affect power. Read the systematic review.

That review is a useful caution, not proof that all inserts are ineffective: the studies were limited, and they do not establish a universally best design. The evidence supports comparing fit and support features, not ranking products by proven performance gains.

What the cycling studies actually found
Contoured support can change contact and perceived support
In a 2013 repeated-measures study, 12 cyclists rode at 90 rpm with a contoured orthosis and a flat insert. The contoured orthosis increased medial and lateral midfoot contact area, and participants reported greater arch and heel support. Perceived comfort did not differ. This small stationary-cycling study does not show that a particular retail insole will be more comfortable on an outdoor ride. See the study summary.
Hardness and posting can shift pressure without consistent comfort gains
A 2018 study of 23 cyclists compared softer and harder orthoses and different forefoot posting conditions. These setups changed contact area and pressure across parts of the foot, but did not consistently change perceived comfort or support. In that study protocol, a lateral forefoot post reduced heel comfort; that finding should not be treated as a prediction for every rider or shoe. See the study summary.

A pressure reduction in one study is not a universal result
A 2023 crossover study in healthy male participants found that a polypropylene insole with selective aluminum at the metatarsal head and big toe reduced maximum plantar pressure compared with the study’s EVA and polypropylene comparators. These were pressure measurements under the study conditions, not evidence that the design prevents pain, raises power, or is best for all cyclists. Read the study.
How to choose an insert for your cycling shoes
Start with the problem you want to address—such as a lack of arch support or an uncomfortable pressure pattern—rather than assuming an insert will increase power. Compare the insert’s shape, firmness, adjustable elements, and effect on shoe fit.

- Designed for cyclists seeking performance and comfort, our insoles provide customizable support, pressure relief, and improve cycling efficiency. Please confirm your arch type before purchasing. You can cut the insoles to get a perfect shape.
- Shock Absorption: High-rebound forefoot and heel pads absorb the impact from the road or trail, which helps reduce fatigue in your feet and joints during long rides. Additionally, the durable materials used resist wear, ensuring long-term use.
- Comfort: The breathable mesh top fabric wicks sweat away from your feet during long rides. The bottom perforations enhance airflow within the shoe. Besides, the insoles are flexible, allowing for natural ankle movement while you're cycling.
- Tailored Support: Three arch heights (low/medium/high) with a deep heel cup stabilize your foot in the shoe. This boosts cycling stability by securing your foot position and promoting proper alignment during pedaling, distributing pressure evenly across the footbed.
- Customer Service: Let our insoles support your riding experience. Should you have any concerns, feel free to reach out to us.
- Arch contour: Look for a shape that meets your arch comfortably without creating a painful high spot or leaving the area unsupported. A contoured profile may change midfoot contact and perceived support, but the small study above did not find a comfort difference.
- Firmness and construction: Different materials and stiffnesses can alter pressure distribution. Research has not shown that a harder or softer insert consistently improves comfort or performance.
- Posting and adjustability: Forefoot posts and modular arch pieces can change how the foot loads the shoe. The evidence does not identify one posting arrangement as beneficial for everyone, so treat adjustments as fit choices rather than guaranteed corrections.
- Internal shoe volume: Cycling shoes often fit closely. A thicker or more substantial insert can take up space and make an already snug shoe feel tighter. Check the insert and shoe makers’ compatibility and sizing guidance; do not assume every insert fits every shoe.
- Intended outcome: Support or a different pressure pattern is a realistic selection goal. Extra power is not an established outcome in the available cycling studies.
Custom-fit and adjustable-arch options
As one example of the features available, Shimano describes an insole using heat-moldable EVA, a rigid high-density polyethylene support structure, and customizable arch inserts. Those are manufacturer descriptions of its product and intended benefits, not independent comparative evidence that it is more comfortable or transfers more power than other inserts. See Shimano’s insole technology overview.
Custom-fit or adjustable designs may let a rider change contour or support, but adjustability alone does not establish that a design is right for a particular foot. The relevant test is whether the resulting shape feels suitable in the intended shoe without compromising fit.
Rank #4
- Trim to Fit: Superfeet insoles are made to be trimmed to fit your shoes and boots; follow cutting instructions before use and if you're between sizes, size up and trim down to fit.
- Low Arch Orthotic Support: Helps stabilize the foot, reducing stress on feet, ankles, knees, and back, all-purpose insoles for 24/7 use and flat feet.
- Premium Arch Support Insoles: Sculpted heel cup cradles the heel to maximize natural shock absorption, designed for roomy footwear.
- Superfeet Insoles for Odor Control: Moisturewick top cover helps reduce odors and keeps feet fresh, high density closed-cell foam supports the whole foot.
- Formerly Known as Superfeet GREEN: All-Purpose Support High Arch (Green) insoles are the same great arch support insoles you love; now with a new name.
A practical way to assess fit
- Identify the concern. Decide whether you are seeking more arch or heel support, a different pressure feel, or simply replacing a worn insert. Do not treat a power claim as an established reason to buy.
- Check shoe compatibility. Review the insert maker’s sizing and fit information, and consider how much room remains inside your current shoe.
- Compare the shoe with and without the insert. Check whether the arch contour feels supportive rather than intrusive and whether the shoe still fits as intended. A replacement that occupies more volume can make a snug shoe tight; one rider’s account of this issue is anecdotal, not a finding about all products. See the rider discussion.
- Judge the result by the goal you set. A change in support or pressure sensation may matter to you, but it does not demonstrate a power gain. If the fit worsens, the insert is not serving its purpose in that shoe.
Is there a research-proven “best” cycling shoe insert?
No. The cited studies compare limited orthosis conditions rather than a broad range of current retail products, and they do not establish a single best insert. They also do not provide a head-to-head basis for naming a product winner. A sensible choice is therefore the insert whose contour, firmness, and volume suit your foot and shoe for the support goal you have—not the one with the strongest unverified performance promise.
