What does a custom fold animation actually change?
Start by identifying what the app animates. A wallpaper, an Always On Display-to-lock-screen transition, a notification effect, an app or window transition, and a graphic that represents hinge movement are different features. A visual effect should not be treated as a change to the hinge or the phone’s underlying fold behavior.

Samsung describes app continuity as maintaining an app’s state when the device changes configuration between the cover and main displays. That is separate from a decorative animation. What animation options does Samsung document?
Samsung’s Global Newsroom article dated April 15, 2025 describes Good Lock features with specific scopes. Wonderland supports animated lock- and home-screen wallpapers and transitions between Always On Display and the lock screen. Edge Lighting+ customizes the image, color, and animation accompanying incoming notifications. Those descriptions offer ways to add motion, but do not establish that these features replace the system’s fold transition.

Is a third-party animation app safe?
There is no basis to declare an unnamed app safe or unsafe. Samsung’s app-continuity guidance explains how apps can respond to display configuration changes; it is not a safety audit or certification of animation utilities.

Before installing a particular app, check:
- Developer and source: Confirm who publishes it and install only from a source you trust.
- Permissions: Compare each requested permission with the animation the app claims to provide. Be cautious if the permissions appear unrelated to that function.
- Model and software: Look for recent reports from users with the same Fold generation and One UI release.
- Effect scope: Check whether it changes a wallpaper or notification, or claims to alter app/window behavior or represent hinge movement. Treat those claims as distinct.
Will it work across the cover screen, main screen, and Flex Mode?
Compatibility depends on the exact app, Galaxy Z Fold model, Android and One UI versions, and the display state it supports. Samsung’s foldable design guidance recommends adapting app experiences for open, closed, and partially folded states. If an app is not resizable, Samsung notes that it may need to restart when the display area changes; Android also describes compatibility mode for apps with orientation or resizability restrictions on foldables and large screens.
Check Samsung’s foldable design guidance and Android’s device compatibility mode documentation. For Good Lock plugins, Samsung’s developer material says support depends on the device’s One UI version; see the Good Lock Plugin Overview. This does not guarantee that a specific plugin supports every Fold model or display state.

Does a custom animation drain battery?
The reviewed official materials provide no measured battery cost for custom fold animations, and no reliable percentage can be quoted for the category. Actual impact may depend on the app and how its effect operates, but a specific figure would need app-specific measurements on a named device under stated conditions.
If you install one, compare battery usage with the effect enabled and disabled on your own phone under similar use. That can help you decide whether it matters to you, but it is a personal check rather than published testing.

How to decide whether it is worth installing
- Worth considering: The app offers a clearly described visual effect you want, its permissions fit that purpose, and its developer documents support for your model and software.
- Wait or skip: The app is vague about what it changes, requests permissions that do not fit its stated feature, or lacks credible compatibility information for your Fold and One UI version.
- For Samsung-documented motion: Consider Good Lock effects such as Wonderland or Edge Lighting+ when their stated wallpaper, lock-screen, or notification scope matches what you want.
