Are Crypto ETF Flows a Reliable Signal for Cryptocurrency Prices?

Studies disagree on whether crypto ETF flows predict prices because they measure different flows, outcomes and periods. Here is how to interpret the evidence without mistaking correlation for a trading signal.

Not reliably on their own. Crypto ETF flows can reveal demand, investor positioning and changing access to an asset, but the published evidence does not establish a consistent, stand-alone way to forecast cryptocurrency prices. Results change substantially depending on whether a study measures net creations and redemptions, assets, trading activity or short selling; whether it predicts price levels, returns or long-run co-movement; and which dates and market regime it examines.

For most readers, ETF flows are best treated as contextual evidence. A flow number becomes more informative when it is aligned with the correct market hours, compared with past returns and other data, and tested over the specific horizon being traded.

What a “reliable signal” would have to do

A forecasting signal should add useful information about a future outcome, not merely move at the same time as that outcome or describe a relationship that holds over many years. For crypto ETFs, at least five different questions are often mixed together:

  • Price-level association: Do higher cumulative flows occur alongside a higher Bitcoin price?
  • Return forecasting: Do today’s flows predict tomorrow’s or next week’s percentage return after accounting for past returns?
  • Long-run co-movement: Do ETF assets and the underlying cryptocurrency share a stable relationship over an extended sample?
  • ETF-return prediction: Do a particular type of flow, such as short selling, precede returns in the ETF itself?
  • Price discovery: Which market incorporates new information first—the spot market, futures or an ETF?

A strong result for one question cannot be substituted for evidence on another. A high fit between flows and a price level, for example, does not mean that a trader can forecast the next daily return from one day’s inflow.

What the published studies actually report

The available studies focus heavily on U.S. spot Bitcoin products launched in 2024. They use different samples and statistical designs, so their conclusions should be read as study-specific findings rather than a single consensus estimate.

Study Measure and period Reported result What it does—and does not—show
Nico Oefele, Economics Letters (2025) One year of Bitcoin spot ETP data; daily price changes and daily net fund flows A 3.4% Bitcoin price change corresponded, on average, to a 0.2% net fund flow, all else equal. Daily price changes were the primary driver of daily net flows. Supports the possibility that investors respond to performance. It does not show that flows forecast subsequent returns.
Mieszko Mazur and Efstathios Polyzos, Journal of Alternative Investments (2025) Early post-launch sample; net flows and Bitcoin price levels Net flows were associated with Bitcoin price levels with an R-squared of 95%. Most Bitcoin price changes occurred outside ETF trading hours, and Bitcoin increases preceded abnormal ETF trading volume. A very high price-level fit in this sample is not 95% accuracy for future returns. The timing observations also point toward price moves drawing ETF activity.
Taghi Guliyev and Aysu Ahmadova, Ledger (2025) Daily Bitcoin spot-ETF assets and Bitcoin price, 11 January 2024–16 May 2025 The series had a positive long-run association and were cointegrated at the 10% significance level. Evidence of long-run co-movement, not a next-day trading rule.
Ashish Ashish, Concordia University thesis (2026) 494 trading days from January 2024 through December 2025; publicly observable ETF flows and future Bitcoin returns After past returns were included, flow variables added no predictive information in the reported tests. P-values across lags 1–10 were 0.325–0.943. An Ethereum ETF robustness check reported a similar absence of flow-driven predictability. A later, return-focused test that did not find incremental predictability in its model and sample. It is thesis research, not a settled result for every market or period.
Olena Onishchenko, Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Finance (2026) Short-selling flows and spot Bitcoin ETF returns Short-selling flows predicted negative spot Bitcoin ETF returns for up to five trading days before the effect dissipated. Applies to short-selling activity, a different measure from aggregate subscriptions and redemptions. It should not be generalized to ordinary net flow data.
Kia, Financial Review (2026) Bitcoin market venues after spot ETFs began trading in 2024 The Bitcoin spot market overtook futures-based ETFs as the primary venue incorporating new information. Addresses where price discovery occurs, not whether ETF flows forecast prices.

Why the findings can look contradictory

“Flow” is not one variable

Aggregate net flow usually means creations minus redemptions in an ETF. Assets under management combine the effect of those flows with changes in the underlying price. Trading volume measures secondary-market activity and can be high even when creations and redemptions are balanced. Short-selling flows describe bearish positioning and have a different economic meaning from net subscriptions. Treating these as interchangeable can produce apparently conflicting results that are actually answers to different questions.

The predicted outcome changes the interpretation

A price level tends to trend over time, so a variable that accumulates with market growth can show a high statistical fit without providing a tradable forecast of the next return. Cointegration asks whether two non-stationary series maintain a long-run relationship. Return prediction asks whether information available at one time improves a forecast for a later percentage change. Price discovery asks which venue reacts first. None of these tests is a replacement for the others.

Influence can run in both directions

ETF creations can require an authorized participant to obtain Bitcoin, while redemptions can reverse that process. Those transactions may affect demand, liquidity or the timing of arbitrage. At the same time, a rising Bitcoin price can attract attention, increase allocations and lead to new creations. Oefele’s result—that price changes were the primary driver of daily net flows—illustrates this reverse direction. A correlation between flows and price therefore does not, by itself, prove that flows caused the move.

Samples cover different market regimes

The first months after a product launch can contain unusual marketing, pent-up demand, portfolio rebalancing and rapid changes in liquidity. A result from that early window may not persist after the market matures. The studies also stop on different dates: some cover roughly one year after launch, while the Concordia thesis extends through December 2025. A model that works in one regime can weaken when volatility, fees, macroeconomic conditions or investor composition change.

Most evidence is not global crypto evidence

Much of the literature concerns U.S. spot Bitcoin products. It should not silently be extended to every exchange-traded product, jurisdiction, token or market structure. Ethereum products, futures-based funds and products in other countries can have different creation mechanisms, trading hours, liquidity and investor bases.

How ETF mechanics can connect flows and prices

ETF shares trade between investors on an exchange. When demand pushes the share price away from the value of its Bitcoin holdings, authorized participants can generally create or redeem shares with the fund and arbitrage the difference. A creation may involve acquiring Bitcoin; a redemption may involve delivering Bitcoin back to the market. That mechanism can transmit demand between ETF shares and the spot market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The transmission is not necessarily immediate or one-directional. An ETF can trade heavily in the secondary market without a same-day net creation. Bitcoin trades continuously, while an exchange-traded fund has defined market hours. A price change overnight or on a crypto venue can be reflected in the ETF only when its market opens. These timing differences matter when a researcher labels one observation as the cause and the other as the effect.

The Mazur and Polyzos findings are a useful illustration: most Bitcoin price changes in their early sample occurred outside ETF trading hours, and Bitcoin increases preceded abnormal ETF trading volume. That pattern is compatible with investors using the ETF to respond to information discovered elsewhere, even though it does not rule out flows affecting prices at other times.

How to evaluate a flow signal before relying on it

  1. Name the exact measure. Record whether the data represent aggregate creations and redemptions, assets, ETF volume, net short-selling activity or another series. Do not combine measures simply because they are all described as “flows.”
  2. Specify the asset and jurisdiction. Identify the cryptocurrency, fund type and market. A U.S. spot Bitcoin observation is not automatically evidence about an Ethereum fund or a non-U.S. product.
  3. Set the forecast horizon in advance. Decide whether the question concerns the next trading day, several days, a month or a long-run relationship. A result for price levels or cointegration cannot be used as proof of a short-horizon return signal.
  4. Align timestamps and trading hours. Note when the flow is published, when the ETF trades and when the underlying cryptocurrency price is sampled. Crypto markets operate continuously, whereas ETF data are tied to exchange sessions.
  5. Control for past returns. A flow measure should be judged on incremental information after accounting for recent price changes, volatility and other known predictors. The Concordia thesis used this type of return-focused test and reported p-values from 0.325 to 0.943 across lags 1–10.
  6. Separate in-sample fit from out-of-sample performance. A high R-squared within an early sample can reflect common trends or a period-specific relationship. Test the rule on later data that were not used to select it, include fees and allow for missed fills.
  7. Check robustness. Repeat the analysis across subperiods, market conditions, alternative flow definitions and reasonable lag choices. Look for whether the effect survives changes in the observation window rather than relying on one specification.
  8. Compare with simpler explanations. If price momentum alone explains the apparent signal, flows may be a reaction variable rather than an independent source of information. Also check whether a few extreme days account for most of the result.

What each commonly cited metric can tell you

Metric Useful interpretation Common mistake
Daily net creations minus redemptions Approximate direction of new money entering or leaving the fund structure for that reporting period. Reading a single inflow as a guaranteed bullish forecast without checking prior price performance and timing.
Assets under management Scale of the vehicle and its exposure at a point in time. Calling asset growth “new money” when rising Bitcoin prices may account for much of the increase.
ETF trading volume Intensity of secondary-market trading and possible changes in participation or liquidity. Assuming high volume equals net buying; every trade has both a buyer and a seller.
Short-selling flows A measure of bearish positioning that may carry information about near-term ETF returns. Applying a short-flow result to ordinary aggregate subscriptions and redemptions.

Price discovery is a separate question

Investors often ask whether ETF flows “lead” the market, but leadership can mean two different things. One meaning is predictive power: flows observed now forecast a later return. The other is price discovery: a venue is first to incorporate new information into its quoted price. Kia’s 2026 study reports that, after spot Bitcoin ETFs began trading in 2024, the Bitcoin spot market overtook futures-based ETFs as the primary venue incorporating new information. That finding does not say that ETF flows have no economic effect; it says that the spot market became the leading information venue in that analysis.

This distinction matters for real-time monitoring. A flow report released after the relevant trading session may summarize a move that already happened. Conversely, an unusual creation or redemption can matter for liquidity or arbitrage without providing a clean forecast of the next return.

Practical pitfalls and how to avoid them

  • Confusing a level relationship with a return signal: Treat the 95% R-squared reported by Mazur and Polyzos as a fit for price levels in their early sample, not as a 95% probability of a profitable forecast.
  • Ignoring reverse causality: If Bitcoin rises first, subsequent creations may represent performance chasing. Oefele’s estimated average relationship is evidence of that possibility, not a universal conversion rule.
  • Mixing publication dates: A flow estimate may be reported after the market move it appears to explain. Use the information timestamp available to a trader, not merely the calendar date.
  • Assuming statistical significance equals economic value: Even a statistically detectable effect can be too small, too short-lived or too costly to trade after spreads, fees and slippage.
  • Generalizing beyond Bitcoin: The evidence base is concentrated in Bitcoin products; the Ethereum robustness result in the Concordia thesis is one study’s check, not proof for every cryptocurrency.
  • Overlooking revisions and definitions: Confirm whether a provider reports estimated, finalized, gross or net figures, and keep the definition consistent over time.

What the evidence supports today

The studies support using ETF data as one piece of a broader market dashboard. Flows can help describe investor demand, the growth of a product, changes in positioning and the way ETF trading interacts with spot and futures markets. They may also carry information when the measure is narrowly defined, such as short-selling flows in the 2026 study.

What the evidence does not establish is a universal rule such as “large inflow means Bitcoin will rise tomorrow” or “outflow means sell.” Early post-launch price-level relationships, long-run asset-price co-movement and short-selling effects cannot be combined into one generic flow indicator. The later thesis result, with no incremental return predictability after past returns in its stated sample, is a direct warning against treating publicly visible aggregate flows as a self-sufficient forecast.

For a disciplined decision, identify the exact flow measure, align it with market hours, define the return horizon, control for past price behavior and test the rule outside the period used to discover it. Until a signal demonstrates stable out-of-sample usefulness across assets and regimes, ETF flows are better interpreted as context about demand and market structure than as a stand-alone buy or sell instruction.
