Before spending hundreds of dollars, check the exact model’s instructions, evidence, safety guidance and conductive-gel requirements—and consider whether modest, uncertain results are worth the cost to you.
What results can you reasonably expect?
Dermatologist Hannah Kopelman, quoted in an article hosted by NuFace, says at-home microcurrent devices work best for “mild improvements and maintenance, rather than dramatic changes.” The article also quotes her saying they are generally less powerful than professional treatments. Because NuFace hosts the article, treat these as attributed comments in a commercially interested context, not independent comparative evidence.

The independent evidence summarized in a 2026 research letter by Priyanka Kadam and Shari R. Lipner does not establish lasting results. The authors describe microcurrent trials as small and short, with no more than 12 weeks of follow-up among the studies they discuss. That leaves long-term effectiveness uncertain.

A broader systematic review, published in 2022, included 37 studies and 1,871 patients across multiple categories of home dermatology devices. Its literature search ran through November 9, 2020, and the review noted limitations including few randomized trials and missing long-term safety and efficacy data. Those totals cover home devices generally; they are not microcurrent-specific evidence.

What the safety reports do—and do not—show
Kadam and Lipner’s 2026 research letter identified 28 unique adverse-event reports associated with a selected group of at-home microcurrent devices in the FDA’s MAUDE database. The authors queried the database on April 15, 2025, for reports dated January 1, 2013, through March 31, 2025. The reports included 25 involving NuFace devices, two involving TheraFace PRO and one involving FOREO BEAR.
Reported complaints included arrhythmia, pain, dizziness, headache and inflammation. The authors also identified one report of retinal detachment, two TheraFace PRO reports involving overheating and one FOREO BEAR report describing facial deformity or disfigurement. These are reports associated with devices, not proof that a device caused each event.

The 28 reports are not a risk rate. The number of people who used the devices is unknown, and the authors say severe events may be more likely to be reported. The selected, small sample also cannot establish which product is safer. The authors summarize the broader evidence gap this way: “Dermatologists should be aware that the largely unregulated at-home microcurrent device market lacks robust, large-scale safety data.”
Small trials do not resolve that uncertainty: one study of 56 participants reported mild erythema in the experimental group, while another study of 30 participants reported no adverse events. Neither establishes long-term safety.

Who should check with a clinician first?
Kadam and Lipner advise people with cardiac conditions or implanted electrical devices to consult a physician before use. The NuFace-hosted article also reports cautions concerning epilepsy, pacemakers or other implanted electrical devices, and pregnancy. Cautions can vary by product and medical circumstances, so read the instructions for the precise device you are considering and ask a clinician if you have a relevant condition or are unsure whether it is appropriate for you. Do not use a device contrary to its instructions.

The FDA 510(k) summary for the NuFace Facial Toning Device (K072260, dated November 7, 2007) describes its intended use as facial stimulation for over-the-counter cosmetic use. It says the device delivers low-level electrical impulses through two probes and requires conductive derma gel.

This is a model-specific regulatory description, not proof of dramatic cosmetic effectiveness and not a determination that every microcurrent product has the same status. A 510(k) substantial-equivalence determination should not be read as evidence that a device delivers large or lasting cosmetic results. Check the current records and instructions for the exact model rather than applying this older filing to other products.

How to decide whether a device is worth buying
- Set a realistic results bar. Decide whether possible mild improvement or maintenance would be worthwhile to you. The sources reviewed do not establish dramatic or lasting rejuvenation.
- Look for evidence tied to the exact model. Check what was studied, how many people took part and how long they were followed. Do not treat a claim about one device as evidence for an entire category.
- Read the full safety instructions. Check warnings, precautions, use frequency and whether your health circumstances call for clinician advice.
- Check consumables and compatibility. Find out whether the device requires conductive gel, which products the manufacturer permits and whether the ongoing cost changes the value for you. NuFace’s cited FDA filing specifies gel for that device; requirements may differ for other models.
- Consider whether you will follow the schedule. A purchase makes little sense if the recommended routine is impractical for you. Follow the model-specific directions rather than increasing use in pursuit of faster results.
There is not enough evidence here to name a best device or rank brands. Compare each candidate’s intended use and regulatory record, model-specific clinical evidence, follow-up duration, safety guidance and required consumables instead of relying on a brand ranking or treating adverse-event report counts as comparative risk rates.
